Inkscape/Laser Cutter Fab Lab Project (100 Points) PART 1 25 points, PART 2 25 points, PART 3 25 points, Part 4 25 points OBJECTIVE: Design a smart device (phone or tablet) tabletop holder in Inkscape that after laser cutting WILL FIT TOGETHER AND WILL ASSEMBLE CORRECTLY. This is a design project to develop a 3D functional object from 2D components that are laser cut. YOU CAN WORK WITH A PARTNER DO NOT START YOUR DESIGN IN INKSCAPE YET COMPLETE PART 1 (below) FIRST!! These will be the requirements: 1. Be creative. Complexity of design will be scored. Must be a snug fit for phone or tablet. 2. Must be made of cardboard; (outstanding designs may be allowed to cut in other materials) 3. Phone or tablet must be at least 1-in above the table surface (all of it; no part of your electronic device may touch the table) 4. Must include at least 5 raster images engraved onto the product to customize your design.
5. Must have your name engraved somewhere on the product.
PART 1 DESIGN PLAN (25 POINTS) IN A MICROSOFT WORD DOCUMENT 1. Explain in detail the task you have to complete. 2. Describe what you plan for your model to look like. What will be the general shape or style of your design? How many pieces will it require to build it? What engravings will you have on it? etc. You might want to sketch this out. 3. Explain in detail HOW you plan to complete this task. Describe exactly what you need to do to complete your design in Inkscape (take in to account the size of your phone or tablet, all the pieces you will need for your style of design, what images you will be engraving, the sizes of all of the pieces you will be cutting, what you need to do in Inkscape to make it work in the laser cutter. 4. Explain how you are going to make the pieces fit together and how you will assemble your tabletop holder. 5. Explain the settings you will use on the laser cutter when you run your project. AFTER COMPLETING YOUR DESIGN PLAN SEE ME - YOU WILL NEED TO REVIEW YOUR DESIGN PLAN WITH ME BEFORE I LET YOU LASER CUT YOUR DESIGN. SAVE AS yourname holderdesignplan and SUBMIT
PART 2 DESIGN YOUR HOLDER IN INKSCAPE (25 POINTS) Remember you are required to have pictures of your design throughout the entire design process 1. In Inkscape, create the design of your phone/tablet tabletop holder you will be creating. 2. You may need to create several Inkscape files for all of the parts of your design. 3. SAVE as a.svg file and a.pdf file yourname HOLDER1, HOLDER2, HOLDER3, etc. 4. Review your Inkscape holder designs with me. 5. SUBMIT ALL OF YOUR PDF FILES FOR YOUR DESIGN PART 3 CREATE AND ASSEMBLE (25 POINTS) 6. See me for scheduling you to laser cut. 7. Remember to take pictures throughout the process.
8. Laser cut your design. 9. Assemble your holder per your design plan. Review your assembled holder with me. PART 4 REFLECTION (25 POINTS) Do not forget to include the pictures you have taken of throughout your design process and of your final product. PARAGRAPH 1 - How did your design plan turn out? Explain. PARAGRAPH 2 Discuss the challenges you encountered. PARAGRAPH 3 - Did it meet its intended purpose? PARAGRAPH 4 - What would you do differently to improve your design?
