Bonham ISD English II Lesson Planner Unit 1: Classical Literature Time Frame: 6 Weeks Objectives Skills: The student will be able to.. Lesson Information Activities 1 st week: Introduction/Reading Introduction to classroom procedures, rules, and expectations Administrative procedures/school paperwork Introduce Blackboard (LMS) class setup Discuss procedures for summer reading assignments and collect work from students who have finished it Review, model, and practice close reading, annotation, and note-taking skills as well as creating Level 1, 2, & 3 questions. Read Harrison Bergeron to connect with both dystopian fiction from English I and theme of resistance to authority in preparation for Antigone. Teach and model active reading, analysis, and annotation. Use this text to show examples of literary elements. Create Level 1, 2, & 3 questions based on reading. 2 nd week: Reading/Writing Finish reading and analysis of Harrison Bergeron. Practice active reading, annotation, identification of literary elements, and analysis. Watch short film 2081 (based on Harrison Bergeron ), taking notes on how the methods of storytelling differ between it and the original text. Review essay writing rubric and work in groups to create student-worded versions. Write an analytical essay comparing and contrasting Bergeron and 2081, addressing tone, diction, structure, syntax, rhetorical devices, audience, and author s purpose. Tone Imagery Motif 3 rd week: Reading/Writing Read Antigone: The Cultural Work of Tragedy for context to Antigone and to identify literary summary. Read Tragedy and Democratic Ideology: The Case of Sophocles Antigone and identify literary critique. Create graphics (Venn Diagram) to show differences between summary and critique Read selection from Aristotle s Poetics for cultural background on tragedy. Introduce drama terms and elements of tragedy in preparation for reading Antigone. Begin reading Antigone, with focus on conventions of drama. Annotate and take close reading notes on specific scenes/pages. Summary vs. critique graphic Bellringer check 4 th week: Reading/Writing Continue the study of Antigone, with focus on figurative language, imagery, mood, and characterization.
