[Originally a British ship, "Vampire" was transferred to the RAN in 1933. One of the best items in the collection. Operation Tabarin was begun in January 1944 to assert British claims over the sub-antarctic islands and to thwart any territorial claims by other nations. Bases were established at Deception Island, Port Lockroy (Graham Land) & Hope Bay. On 11th Nov 1944, HMS "William Scoresby" departed from Port Lockroy with outgoing mail. 2,000T 410 C A/B Ex Lot 410 NAVAL MAIL: Undated airmail covers to GB with tombstone censor h/s plus double-circle 'POSTAGE/1/PAID' (2, one in red), similar '2' in red (also with oval 'DEPUTY CHIEF FIELD/[crown]/CENSOR' h/s in red & lovely "aeroplane" 'BY AIR' h/s), simple '5D' in black, double-circle 'POSTAGE PAID/5d' (superb strike) or boxed '10D Paid' h/s in red.
