WHAT IS CULTURE NIGHT Culture Night is an annual all-island public event that celebrates culture, creativity and the arts. This year, it will take place on Friday 21st September. From 5pm onwards, cultural venues across county Monaghan will stay open for everyone to come enjoy the unique experience of Culture Night, a free night of fun, entertainment and discovery. Monaghan has a vibrant rich cultural community and this is a great opportunity to sample the area s cultural and creative offerings for free throughout the evening. We are delighted to have so many organisations involved this year again and we hope you enjoy exploring the rich cultural landscape of County Monaghan. All Events Are FREE!! CLONES AREA Art Deco and Roaring 20 s Evening Clones Library from 7pm Clones Library will transform back to the roaring 1920 s with plenty of swing, jazz music and some daring outfits as we celebrate this particular decade in history. We will host the Art Deco exhibition from the Paul Hankar Institute in Brussels. The Art Deco Expo sets out the origins, influences and principles of the Art Deco movement in the early 1900 s and its evolution as a major form of architecture with stunning supporting visuals and motifs. The exhibition will be of particular interest to those interested in architecture, fashion and design. A screening of the International Award Winning, Clones Film Festival produced, You re Not A Man At All, followed by a number of thought provoking short films. CASTLEBLAYNEY AREA Culture Night @ The Íontas Theatre Castleblayney from 7pm An unique programme of arts and cultural experience celebrating local artists and recognising the cultural context which found expression in the music and life of Big Tom, Castleblayney s very own Country and Western star. An exhibition celebrating Big Tom and the local music scene to include a room of memorabilia. The residents and their families will be welcomed to The Speakeasy Club by their host, guiding them to their table set in the opulence and glamour of the 1920 s Prohibition, with table service of light refreshments. An immersive musical and theatrical experience, featuring music by blues and Jazz duo The Two Five Ones and the close harmonies of an accappella quartet, making the music of Billie Holliday, Fats Waller and Ella Fitzgerald sing through the home. This event is open to the residents and their families of St. Mary s Hospital only.

CARRICKMACROSS AREA Circus Skills, Family Show & Taste of Culture Evening Carrickmacross Library from 7pm Come along for a wonderful fun and entertaining evening with the Circus crew! Learn circus skills such as juggling, balancing, twirling yokes like a poi, diablo, stilt walking, spinning objects likes plates, make a balloon dog or have a go at chinese ribbons along with other crazy games and gags! Suitable for the whole family to particpate in. Taste of Culture Join us for a culinary trip around the world, with a multicultural food tasting session provided by members of the Fáilte Isteach group. 042 9661148 or email carrickmacrosslibrary@monaghancoco.ie MONAGHAN TOWN AREA Culture Night @ The Garage Theatre Monaghan 5-8pm This Culture Night, join professional visual artist Niamh O Connor, for an introduction and demonstration into the fascinating medium of Encaustic wax. Niamh will display the many and various ways this wax-based medium can be used, from the craft of using irons on card right up to and including the use of encaustic for fine art in painting, printing and even sculpture. Discover the ancient origins of the medium, its contemporary uses and global appeal as well as it s ultimate adaptability and mixed media capabilities. The first fifteen people to register on the night will be invited to try their hand at Craft iron work on card and will leave with a number of small works of their own. Púca Puppets Béirín Beag Buí is a lullaby film for young children. Winner of a Dingle International Film Festival s Fisín Award, it is about the magical world of dreams between sleep and waking. Muineachán le Geailge are delighted to announce author and storyteller Réamonn Ó Ciaráin will deliver a public talk on mythical Irish hero CúChulainn and his legacy. Réamonn will deliver a session on the relevance of CúChulainn s story to the people of Ireland and especially Ulster. The CúChulainn story has been passed onto us from generations before us, through Irish, and it is important that this story is further spread, through all languages of the world, as CúChulainn was a true hero, on a pedestal with Archilles from Greek history. feargal@mlg.ie Multicultural Evening Monaghan Library 6pm Come along to a multicultural evening at Monaghan Library, with music from CCE Baile Mhuineachán, a multi-cultural food tasting session, a mini fashion show and traditional music from the residents of St. Patricks Accommodation Centre. 047-81830 or email monaghanlibrary@monaghancoco.ie The Bugle Babes Monaghan County Museum 7.30pm Monaghan County Museum, in connection with it s nationally acclaimed new exhibition; The Monaghan Spitfire Life on the Border with a World at War, presents the Bugle Babes. Singing the billboard hits from the Golden Era of Swing and Jive, the Bugle Babes are a 1940 s style harmony trio, inspired by The Andrews Sisters and the Hollywood stars of stage and screen. The Bugle Babes have performed all over Ireland from The National Concert Hall to the Cork Opera House and on radio and television including the Late Late Show with Ryan Turbidy. BALLYBAY AREA The Road to Ballybay Pearse Brothers Centre, Ballybay 8pm An evening of local entertainment including music, songs, drama, recitation comedy and storytelling. It will take place in Pearse Park Ballybay. A special Photographic Exhibition by renowned photographer Donal McEnroe will be hosted in Ballybay Post office and OTHER LOCATIONS Clay n Ceol Busy Bee Ceramics Studios, Glaslough 6-10pm Come along to an evening of mix clay pottery demonstrations with the sound of local traditional music in our new rustic studio on the main street of Glaslough. Have a go on the potter s wheel and bring home your own masterpiece. And a concert of traditional music and song by well known R U for Reel. the centre at 042-9378560 or email infoatpkc@eircom.net The Quiet Tree at The Tin Church The Tin Church, Laragh from 5-7pm The Tin Church will be transformed into leafy Whistleberry Forest on Culture Night with the arrival of The Quiet Tree. The Quiet Tree tells the story of the creatures of Whistleberry Forest who have discovered a little oak tree growing deep in the woods. However, there are no birds singing, no leaves rustling and no animals scurrying around its trunk. This delightful music performance takes children and accompanying adults on an adventure through the forest where they explore musical soundscapes, sing, dance and help Oran the Owl, Sorley the snail, and Faolán the frog bring the little oak tree to life through music. 087 8957680 or email laraghheritage@gmail.com Sean Nós, Set Dancing and Music Evening Corduff & Raferagh Community Centre, Corduff 8pm Want to learn Sean Nós or set dancing? Come along to this beginners workshop at 8pm and tap the next ninety minutes away with a professional teacher. Followed by traditional music session at 9.30pm where the participants who have learnt their steps in the workshop, will be given the opportunity to test out them out as well as seeing the dances performed in their natural setting.
