Auditorium Conditions and Needs

Stephenville HS Auditorium Usage June 2016-May 2017 Daily Student Instructional Usage (band, choir, theatre rehearsals, set construction, video tech filming, etc,) 187 SHS Student Events (NHS inductions, talent show, club meetings, student trainings, etc,) 90 SISD Student Performances (band concerts, choir concerts, theatrical performances, etc.) 40 SISD Hosted Events (band solo/ensemble contest, one act play competition, region band auditions, region choir planning meeting, etc.) 40 SHS Administration/Counselor Hosted Events (Parent meetings, workshops, trainings, guest speakers, etc.) 30 Reflects number of uses which is often multiple times per day. SHS Approved Community Outreach (Sting mini camp, color guard mini camp, fine arts camp, etc.) 20

A conservative approximate number of times the facility is used based on attendance as either a participant or spectator: 119,400

ADA Compliance No wheelchair accessibility to stage from audience Designated area for wheelchair seating is the front row. Wheelchairs use the aisles which is a safety issue

Area for wheelchair seating

Lighting LED stage lights installed in 2014. Due to the lack of a catwalk (overhead lighting from the front of the stage) there are not enough of these instruments to light a larger/new stage. These lights can easily be moved to a different auditorium in the district to improve lighting needs at one of the existing venues. Lights pictured are accessible only by scissor lift making adjustments between shows nearly impossible Standard theatrical lighting practices are not possible due to the low ceiling and limited front of stage lighting space.

Booth should be here B O O T H

Lights in picture accessible by rolling ladder

Stage Floor Over 40 years old, tongue and groove stage floor In 2016 eleven (11) soft spots had to be repaired. Repaired spot Students and a piano have pushed through the floor

Soft spots on stage floor

Stage is not large enough to hold the entire band within view of the audience. Students sitting offstage that can not be seen by audience

Because of a lack of buffered entrances and no secondary doors into the auditorium: Light floods in windows during performances Noise from doors entrances/exits during performances is disruptive

Poor Acoustics Little open space for sound to resonate. This auditorium is well suited to show movies, but was not designed for live theatre or concerts where the sounds need to mix before hearing. This impacts both choir and band concerts and the recordings they create here.

Seating 968 seats in the auditorium Average condition of a seat pictured Bolts fall out and have to be replaced regularly Must be sanded when students carve words into them Very uncomfortable

Theatre Facilities

Wing Space & Backstage There is very little space backstage for set construction, painting, and storage

Light/Sound Booth Booth is located on the far left of the auditorium. The light and sound is not accurately seen/heard from this position. Booth should be center and elevated to look down on stage 3 to 4 technicians need to use this space at one time Adequate storage and outlets needed.

Dressing Rooms Two dressing rooms 13 X 14 2 sinks and 1 toilet each. No shower No storage or lockers No A/C or heating and no ventilation

23 girls are performing in next SHS production They have 1 dressing room to use This is all 23 girls in dressing room at one time Heat level gets unbearable so they brace the door open to get some relief unless they are undressing.

No stage house. No fly system. No opportunities for backdrops, cycs or needed theatrical staging elements as all rods are dead hung and are not accessible to students and staff.

Costume Shop Costumes are made and altered in my classroom Need a space for sewing near set construction as they are done during the same periods

COSTUME STORAGE SHS Theatre reuses many costumes as a huge money savings. Space stores: Shoes Costumes Fabrics Accessories (ties, jewelry, hoop skirts, etc,)

Students built shelves for storing fabric from scrap lumber and did this on their own time. Then this last year, students purchased and built shoe storage as a senior gift.

Workshop Serves as tool, lumber, and paint storage as well as props, hats, and wigs Area is too small for set construction or painting

Paint Sink Custodians sink is used for washing paintbrushes New space must include a sink for washing brushes.

Needs Loading dock with large opening for loading in and out of space (used for UIL OAP as well as lumber deliveries Larger dressing rooms with air conditioning Scene shop for construction and painting Wheelchair seating and access to stage Projection on either side of stage or further back onstage Fly space so backdrops can be used for productions Increased stage space as current YJBand does not fit onstage (some students are offstage playing during concerts) New stage floor Increased seating for larger student body

Band Facilities

Rehearsal space during Jazz Lunch - at capacity for guests. When marching band is rehearsing we take up all available space.

Performance Ensembles Marching Band (including competitive colorguard and percussion) 2 UIL competitive concert bands (will add a 3rd next year) Jazz ensemble Winterguard Indoor Percussion 10-20 small ensembles every year

Storage Colorguard and percussion share storage space Guard does not have lockable storage for personal items

Changing facilities Installed shower curtains for guard to change from workout clothes to school clothing.

Practice room area With the growth of the program, we ve purchased more equipment but little room to store them. Keyboards are in ensemble room intended for small groups. We share these facilities with choir. There is no sound proofing and if groups are rehearsing simultaneously vocalists have a hard time hearing.

Instrument lockers Anticipating 10% growth over the next few years, wind instrument lockers will be outgrown in 3 years. Next semester we anticipate 8 tuba players in the bands, there are only 6 tuba lockers.

Access Double doors with center bar that has to be removed twice a day (four times on Mondays) to get keyboards to and from practice field.

Music library Band s music library is at capacity with file cabinets. Taller Wenger music library system cabinets would accommodate all music storage needs.

Needs for band area More storage for percussion equipment practice area Lockable storage for colorguard members Changing facilities for all band members storage Soundproofed Reformat library storage Wind instrument Easier way to transport large equipment to practice field (different door system)

Choir Facilities

Performance Ensembles 5 UIL competitive choirs, In The Mix 8-12 small ensembles each year

Choir practice rooms As previously mentioned sound bleed over makes simultaneous practice sessions difficult for vocalists. Sound proofed walls would help substantially.

Choir music library Intended library space completely filled and practice areas needed to house additional music.

Uniform storage Storage room is at capacity

Choir needs Soundproofing practice facilities shared with band Reformat music storage to open up more small practice rooms Reformat/expand uniform storage

Dance Facilities

Studio area Low ceiling and load bearing column in the center of practice space

Changing area Lockable personal storage One on site restroom, students do not have access to hallway restrooms - locked during the day due to general student body misuse. No shower facilities

Storage Outgrown uniform and equpiment storage areas

Practice field Shared with band, schedules are on opposite ends of the day so scheduling is generally fine. Critter issues (maintenance does help, but its a big field) Potholes have caused some issues with turned ankles with both groups

Dance Studio Needs More equipment and costume storage space Modify studio to remove column Restroom facilities updated Practice field upgrades (for band as well)

SHS ART

2017-2018 ART OFFERINGS 3 class periods of Art 1 2 class periods of Art 2 1 class period of Art 3/AP Art 1 teacher 132 students 3,000 projects

-1 class period available for art 1 this year

Why one less Art 1 offering? Not enough interest? NO!! There is now a waiting list for Art 1! After 2 years of running 3 classes (Art 2, 3 and AP) at the same time using all available space AND the floor Art 3/AP got their own class period. This reduced the number of class periods for Art 1 from 4 classes to 3.

Art 1 With an average of 25 students in each Art 1 class, the space is maxed out. An additional classroom and teacher is necessary to meet the current needs, not to mention future growth.

Future Growth Expectations Considerable growth in Art 3 and AP Art 4 is quite possible as the endorsement track is encouraging students to stay in the program until graduation. Previously I could guess that 25% Art 1 to Art 2 50% Art 2 to Art 3 50% Art 3 to AP Art 4 However with the endorsement track 2016 2017 34% of Art 1 students advanced to Art 2 40% of Art 1 students advanced to Art 2 And with an almost 40% GROWTH in students in the Art 3/AP Art 4 combined class this year, it is already a full class.

Electrical Needs The art room was originally a trades classroom and workshop complete with roll up garage door. When this space was transitioned into an art classroom, cabinetry was placed in front of the electrical outlets. Because of this, there is only electricity available on one wall in the classroom. Uncovered electrical outlet inside of cabinet

Sink Needs Sinks that drain. Faucets that have sprayers or a flexible neck.

Printing Accessibility Round trip to color printer= a little over a lap on the track. With no student access to copier, a class day is lost when a student has to share a file that needs printing.
