Musical opportunities for everyone, striving for excellence. Auditioned groups: Orchestra Stage Band Concert Band Chamber Choir Music Activities Performance Groups Orchestra Stage Band Concert Band Jazz Ensemble Choir Chamber Choir Girls Barbershop Chorus Chamber Orchestra Irish band Percussion Ensemble Brass Ensemble Barbershop Quartets String Ensemble Sax Ensemble Sax Quartet Rock Bands Jazz Combos Chamber Groups etc. Junior students can join Orchestra, Stage Band, Concert Band and Chamber Choir by invitation or through an audition only. These 4 groups at Cashmere are comprised primarily of senior students and accordingly are the most challenging and work towards our highest level of performance. Our emphasis is on quality music experiences, challenge and fun! Cost for participation is a Music Activity fee of $40 per year for all internal music activities. Most of these groups rehearse either before school, lunchtime or after school. Some rehearse in timetabled music periods. Regular play-outs/sing-outs are offered to music groups and indeed are in demand by numerous community groups e.g. fairs, weddings, celebrations, service clubs, corporate functions, festivals. Regular features of the Events Calendar are Smokefree Rockquest, Choir Festival, Chamber Music Festival, Orchestra Festival, Concert Band Festival, ARA Jazz Festival, Barbershop Contest.

Curriculum Music Music is an optional subject from year 9 through to year 13. Cashmere is unique in that after Year 10 Music splits into two streams: Contemporary Music with Technology and Performance Music Studies. Year 9 Year 10 Year 11 Year 12 Year 13 Music Performance Music [Full Year Course] Contemporary Music [1/2 Year Course] Music Studies 101 Music Studies 201 Music Studies 301 Contemporary Music 121 Contemporary Music 221 Contemporary Music 321 Music: This Course aims to provide students with opportunities for self-expression and assist them to develop to their full potential. Students will gain skills in playing, singing, composing, and listening. These skills will be developed in and through a range of musical contexts. Performance Music: This full year course allows the opportunity for students who enjoy music making to continue developing skills on their instrument and to participate in a wide variety of musical activities including solo and group performance, Composition, theoretical training and exposure to a variety of music styles. Contemporary Music: This half year course is designed for students who have an interest in music but do not necessarily intend to continue with Music at a Senior Level. Students will develop skills in performance on Keyboard and Guitar, composition and music appreciation of a range of contemporary styles of music. Music Studies 101: This course develops musical ability and gives a wide exposure to various styles of music. Students focus on performances skills (both solo and group), composition, Aural Awareness, Score Reading and Music History. Contemporary Music 121: This course includes Solo and Group Performance, Composition and Aural Awareness. However, this course also introduces students to music technology with an emphasis on sound systems and recording software and equipment. Music Studies 201: Building on Level 1 Music Studies, Performance, Composition, Aural and Musicological skills are developed further. This course also introduces are new standard of Instrumentation. Students will also study, compare and contrast classical music works with contemporary works. Contemporary Music 221: Continuing to progress students skills in Performance and Composition, Students will also begin working with more advanced music technology including software such as logic. Music Studies 301: Prepares students for moving into Tertiary Study in Music. Students are able to decide on an individual education programme that best suits their interests and talents. Choosing from Performance (Solo and Group), Composition, Arrangement, Research, Conducting, Aural Awareness, Harmony and Counterpoint. Contemporary Music 321: This course provides a final stepping stone for students to Tertiary Study in Contemporary Music, Jazz, Audio engineering etc. Students will choose a course which includes Performance, Composition, Technology and Research.

2006 Australia: Sydney & Brisbane: 2008 Lower North Island: 2010 Melbourne & Adelaide Chamber Choir Performing on the 2014 Australia Tour to Sydney & Brisbane Music Tours The Music department sets out on a music tour every second year, with us alternating between and regional tour somewhere in New Zealand and an International Tour. Tours are a fantastic opportunity for our students to perform to much a wide audience and present their talent around New Zealand and the world. They allow students to grow in confidence, make life long connections with students from other schools, learn from professionals and other students to improve their own music making. Tours include: 2012 Otago: Secondary school exchanges and performances. Primary School performances. Public Performances. Visits to Tertiary Music Institutions, with master-classes and workshops. Opportunities to see other groups and professional musicians perform. Lots more and a lot of fun!! 2018 Tour USA New York

Itinerant Tutors Music Tuition Cashmere Offers music tuition for a wide range of instruments. Students can either learn through the in school itinerant music scheme or our After Hours Music Programme. Because of the limited availability of Itinerant hours higher demand instruments such as Drums, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Saxophone and Keyboard are taught through the after school programme at a cost of $80 per term (8 weeks of lessons). Musicals Every second year, alternating with music tour, we stage a musical featuring the best students from music, drama and dance. Past musicals include: Westside Story, Oliver, Cabaret, Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof, Back to the 80 s, Guys and Dolls and the Music Man. Concerts Throughout the year all of our groups have regular opportunities to perform at Cashmere and in the wider community. All of our ensembles a regularly featured in our two biggest concerts of the year: Music in May and Winter Soiree. We also have an annual mini tour of our contributing primary schools, taking several of our major groups to perform. Yr. 9 Music Scholarship A music scholarship is offered to a prospective Year 9 student who shows exceptional music talent and has the potential to excel on an instrument/voice. All students interested are invited to apply. Application forms are available in the Prospectus and from the school office. Following the closing date of application, shortlisted applicants will be requested to give an audition on the following Friday.
