- 2 - DEDICATION I would like to thank God, my family, and my beautiful wife, Belinda, for all their support. The Playwright STORY OF THE PLAY Here s a collection of eight hilarious sketches which look at Christianity from a different point of view. The sketches are designed to make your audience laugh out loud, and at the same time look inwardly at themselves. Discover what happens when we really fall into sin ; when men and women have their roles reversed in marriage; or when a gift of a Bible is presented without any strings attached. This collection is funny, entertaining and thought provoking for all ages and groups. The skits range from 1 to 5 performers. CONTENTS Apathy The Gift The Father Knows Best Tithing Men Are From Where? I m Free Intercessory Orange Juice Falling Down

- 3 - APATHY (A Monologue) (AT RISE: TERRANCE enters wearing a preppy outfit and carrying a clipboard. He looks angry.) TERRANCE: Hello. My name is Terrance T. Longacre and I m ticked! And I do mean ticked! I m here today to talk to you about something very serious. Apathy. That means lack of concern, and to be quite honest, I ve been worried about the amount of apathy that I ve seen displayed by others, lately. It seems that everywhere I look I see someone in need, and that need isn t being met by you people. For example, the other day when I was leaving the church potluck, one of the elders was asking people to help clean up...you know, stacking chairs and things, and in this man s case elder is quite the appropriate title. Now, I m not afraid to say that I got very upset that day because no one was stopping to help this poor unfortunate elder. I must have waited around for at least ten minutes to see if someone would help, but no one did. I was on my way out, but when I saw him start to stack the chairs by himself, I went over to him and said, Fred, I feel the Lord calling me to tell you that your reward will be great in heaven. It s sure a good thing for old Fred that I had time to stop and encourage him before I left. He looked so pitiful at that point that I almost helped him, but I was in a hurry and I had already spent ten minutes just waiting to see if anyone else would help. I don t think that I ll ever forget the picture of that poor elder cleaning up all by himself. Come on, people! That shouldn t be the last thing I see when I leave a church!

- 4 - And that s just one example of the apathy that s been running rampant around here. If that s not enough for you, just the other day I went past a person begging for money at the door of the restaurant I went into for lunch. Just out of curiosity, I got a table near the window to see how long it would take before someone would give him some money. The whole time I was there he didn t get a dime. And I was there a long time because I ordered my steak well-done. I felt like giving that poor boy some money, but I only had bills and enough change for a tip. You know, I sat there eating my steak and just shaking my head thinking that this sort of thing has got to stop. Do you realize how badly your apathy is affecting other people? The other day I saw a lady who lives in my town. As I went by I said, Hi, how are you? and she said, Well, not too good I m afraid. She then proceeded to tell me everything that was wrong in her life. The problem with that was... (Counting with HIS fingers.)...1: I was extremely late for a meeting and...2: It was a rhetorical question anyway! Now, if somebody had taken the time to listen to that poor lady, I wouldn t have been in the awkward situation of having to excuse myself right in the middle of her story. You people should think about that next time you stop to talk to someone! Finally, and this is probably the most severe, we have to talk about all that smut on the television. Some of you probably aren t aware of this, but you can find smut on the TV every single day. Granted, some nights you have to stay up until two or three in the morning, but it s there. Take Friday nights for example. On a certain cable channel you can watch a smutty little show produced by smutty little people. It s the worst thing I ve ever seen! I keep waiting for you people to write letters and get shows like that off the air! But no. Every week I tune in and every week there it is.

- 5 - So, that brings us to the reason we re here today. I feel I m being called to put an end to all this apathy. Now, I ve brought something with me. This is a list of all the things we, as caring people, should be doing for others. There are things on this list like helping elderly people across the street, giving money to charities, and even helping out at soup kitchens. I want you to look at it and sign up for the thing that you feel is most suited for the gift that God gave you. If we all pitch in and use our gifts then we can get the job done. Let me encourage you by taking me for an example. My gift is making lists and telling people to get on them. Now, I ve done my part. It s time that you did yours. Thank you. Good night. THE END

- 6 - THE GIFT CAST OF CHARACTERS (1 m, 1 w) LARRY: Young working guy. JOAN: His co-worker, about the same age. PROPS - Book for Larry, coat and wrapped box with a Bible inside for Joan. (AT RISE: LARRY is sitting in his living room reading a book. There is a KNOCK on the door; he gets up and answers it. JOAN steps in.) LARRY: Hi, come on in. I was just reading when you phoned. JOAN: You sure you don t mind seeing me? LARRY: No, not at all, I enjoy talking to you at work, and when you phoned, I thought it would be nice to have you over. JOAN: Thanks. LARRY: Have a seat. (THEY sit.) JOAN: Actually, the real reason I wanted to come over is so I could give you this. (JOAN pulls out a box with a bow attached from inside her coat and holds it out for LARRY.) LARRY: (Stares at it for a moment.) What is it? JOAN: It s a gift, here take it. LARRY: Don t be silly, my birthday isn t for five months. JOAN: (Laughing.) It s not for your birthday. It s just a gift. LARRY: Why? Have I done something nice for you or something? JOAN: (Not laughing as much, but still smiling.) No, it s just a present. No reason for it. I just wanted you to have it. That s all.

- 7 - LARRY: You don t have a reason for giving this to me? JOAN: No. LARRY: It s not for my birthday...i didn t do any favors for you...(thinking out loud.)...let s see...hmm. (Idea.) AHA! When s Christmas? No...wait... JOAN: Larry. Just accept it. There s no reason for it. Honest. LARRY: But that s not natural. Nobody gives something for no reason. (Thinks HE catches on.) Oh...I m on to you! What s the catch? Do you need me to fill in for you at work? C mon, tell me. Do you want me to loan you some money? What is it? JOAN: (Trying to stay patient, sitting on the edge of HER chair.) Larry, I don t want anything, I just want you to have it. Okay? LARRY: (Double checking.) You re not thanking me for anything? JOAN: No. LARRY: You don t want me to do anything for you? JOAN: No. LARRY: Honest? JOAN: Honest. I wanted to give you a gift. It s just that simple. Now do you understand? LARRY: Yeah, I understand. JOAN: (Relieved.) Oh, good. LARRY: You want me, don t you? JOAN: What?!? LARRY: You want me! That s it. You feel your biological clock ticking away and you need to get married. Because let s face it, you re not getting any younger... JOAN: Larry! LARRY: (Gathering strength.) Joan, I m just not ready for that kind of commitment. JOAN: Larry! Listen I - - LARRY: (Holding up HIS hand in a stop motion.) No, Joan, don t make this harder on yourself. I like you, but not that way. JOAN: Larry! I m already engaged. I just thought you might like a present. Why are you making this so difficult?
