RNCM Conducting Course for Music Educators Application Pack 2015-16 www.rncm.ac.uk/conducting

The RNCM is pleased to invite applications for a new course aimed at conductors working in music education. Running between October 2015 and March 2016, three workshops linked by an e-learning element will provide a structured opportunity for those working with youth orchestras, bands and ensembles who wish to develop their technical and artistic skills. The RNCM is currently at the forefront of conducting training internationally. Current students and recent graduates of our Junior Fellowship and Masters programmes currently hold, or have recently completed, assistant conductor positions with the Berliner Philharmoniker, of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, English National Opera, the Hallé, London Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, and Minnesota Orchestra. We are delighted to be able to extend the world-class teaching that lies at the heart of these successes to those doing vital work in music education. The emphasis is firmly on practical work and reflects the core belief that underpins all of the College s world-class conducting programmes: conductors learn best by conducting other musicians. Workshop 1, 25 & 26 October 2015 Taking place at Whitemoor Lakes Conference Centre, near Lichfield in Staffordshire, from 2pm on the 25th to 4pm on the 26th. Running in conjunction with Derbyshire & County Youth Wind Band s residential course, there will be introductory technical sessions and discussions on rehearsal strategies and score study. Participants will work with smaller ensembles and the full band. The Derbyshire CCYWB is one of the finest ensembles of its type in the country, and gained a Platinum award in the national finals of the recent National Concert Band Festival. One night s accommodation and catering for this workshop is included in the course fee. Participants will need to be DBS checked. Workshop 2, 10 January 2016 Held at the RNCM in Manchester, from 10am to 5pm, this workshop will focus on developing knowledge of specific instrumental families. Participants will work with string and wind/brass ensembles of RNCM students exploring conducting and rehearsal techniques relevant to each. Workshop 3, 20 March 2016 The final workshop will take place at Hallé St Peters in Manchester. Following a morning preparation session with professional pianists, the afternoon will be a masterclass with the Hallé Youth Orchestra. E-learning All conducting sessions will be filmed and distributed online to the participants. In between the workshops, participants will be asked to film their own rehearsals and submit them online. Feedback will then be provided in the form of a voiceover, and returned to the participant for review enabling consolidation of the work done during the workshops. On successful completion of the course, participants will be given an RNCM Certificate of Participation detailing the work undertaken during the course.

Active places 12 active places are available. To apply for an active place, please submit a brief CV highlighting your conducting experience and if possible some video footage of your conducting - a link to an online file (YouTube, Vimeo etc) is strongly preferred. This information should be sent with the completed application form before Friday 4 September 2015. You will be informed of the result of your application within 7 days of the closing date, and if successful details for payment of the course fee will be provided then. Observer places Observers are invited to watch all sessions and to participate in group discussions. Optionally, the e-learning element of the course can be available to observers. This is particularly suitable for those who may not be able to commit to the full programme. Observers are asked to confirm their attendance a minimum of 2 weeks before each workshop. Costs (inclusive of VAT) Active participants: 500 Observers: 50 per day, 100 for the e-learning element of the course Mark Heron Mark Heron is a member of the conducting faculty at the RNCM where he works with the full range of the College s orchestras and ensembles. He teaches conducting within the Junior Fellow and Masters programmes and runs the RNCM s innovative programme of external conducting courses. He is Music Director of the Nottingham Philharmonic, Liverpool Mozart, and Manchester University Symphony Orchestras and appears as a guest conductor with professional orchestras and ensembles in the UK, Spain, Finland, Estonia, Germany, Portugal and Israel. His teaching work at the RNCM and The University of Manchester has produced a remarkable number of talented young conductors. Jamie Phillips Assistant Conductor of the Hallé, has already developed a strong guest-conducting profile. As a result of his success at the Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award in 2012, he was invited to conduct the Camerata Salzburg in the 2013 Salzburg Festival and the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg in 2014. Engagements in the 2014/15 season include debut concerts with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia, of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, and the Ulster Orchestra. Further ahead, he will conduct BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Residentie Orchestra, and re-invitations to the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie and Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra. In the 2015/16 season, Jamie Phillips will become the Hallé s Associate Conductor. He is also Music Director of the Hallé Youth Orchestra.
