1 S.C.S. Players Newsletter VOLUME 55, ISSUE 3 FEBRUARY 9, 2015 Newsletter Editor: Linda Neuwirth Assistant Editor: Matthew Sheehy WELCOME TO THE SCS PLAYERS 55th SEASON Special points of interest: General Membership Meeting Social Event: The 39 Steps Membership Information Social Event: The Red Party From the President Script Seeking Director PHOTO PLAY Calendar of Events Inside this issue: March General Membership Meeting 1 Hello and welcome to our 55th Season. We are planning two memorable plays for our 55th year providing community theater to the public. The St. Clair Shores Players will continue the tradition of producing a variety of plays, from serious to comedy, realistic life to fantasy, with the intention of entertaining the public and giving them a glimpse of another life for a little while. The St. Clair Shores Players have a Facebook and Twitter account. We are gaining more followers wanting updates on play productions. Some of the positions available are: Volunteer to be a member of the play reading committee. If you are interested contact Mario Razo at malikite9@gmail.com for more information. Have you ever thought, Acting is great, but what I really want to do is direct! If so, please consider directing a short skit for the General Membership meeting. Its fun and it will qualify you as a director for a full SCSP production! Quotable... Acting is not about being someone different. It s finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there. The March General Membership Meeting Tuesday, March 10, 2015 Good Shepherd Methodist Church Harper Avenue between 13 Mile and Masonic St. Clair Shores 7:30-8:30 pm We re looking forward to you attending the meeting and giving us your input on activities you would like the Players to be involved in, and the upcoming season.

2 PAGE 2 S.C.S. PLAYERS Spring Social Event By Matthew Sheehy We have our annual Red Party all planned for Sunday, February 15th at 5:00pm at Gilbert s Lodge and I really do hope that all of you are planning to attend this fun event. (Don t forget to wear something red!). Since our February event is just days away, I am now looking to plan for April. One option I am considering is going to see the play The 39 Steps as preformed by the students of Wayne State at the Hillberry Theater. First, let s take a look at the show. The 39 Steps is a hilarious spoof of the 1935 Hitchcock thriller that will have you laughing from start to finish, blending frenzied performances and wildly inventive stagecraft with spies, murder, and some good oldfashioned romance! A two-time Tony and Drama Desk award winner, the serious spy story turned madcap comedy is full of biting wit and hilarious character changes, as well as allusions to (and puns of) other Hitchcock classics. Sound fun right? Next, the Theater. The Hillberry is in Detroit on Cass Ave (4743 Cass Avenue, at the corner of Hancock). It s a pretty nice place to see a show. Its big, but not huge. I ve seen a few shows there myself and I ve been pleased with the quality of work they do there. What date? I am suggesting we go on Saturday, April 25 for the 2:00pm matinee. How about the ticket price I hear many of you saying? For the Saturday matinee the ticket price is $28.50 ($23.00 for seniors over the age of 62). I know a bit on the pricy side, but remember it is going to support the Wayne State School of Theater and Dance, so we are doing a good deed and helping to support the theater and other actors. What do you think? Wanna go see a show? Email me with your thoughts. scsplayersorg@yahoo.com Renew Your Membership Now is the time to show your continued support for the SCS Players and renew your membership for the 2014-2015 season. Single memberships are only $20.00 and families are $30.00. Make your checks playable to SCS Players and mail it in care of Mario Razo, Membership Committee Chairperson. Box 141 St. Clair Shores, MI 48080-0141 Thanks! You are Invited to Our Annual Red Party What: St. Clair Shores Players Annual Red Party When: Sunday, February 15th Time: 5:00 pm Where: Gilbert s Lodge 22335 Harper Ave. St. Clair Shores, (on Harper south of 9 Mile Road) FAMILY AND FRIENDS ARE WELCOME. AS PART OF THE FESTIVITIES, PLEASE WEAR RED AND BRING A VALENTINES CARD IF YOU WISH TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CARD EXCHANGE. EVERYONE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PURCHASING THEIR OWN FOOD AND BEVERAGE. WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU THERE!

3 VOLUME 55, ISSUE 2 PAGE 3 From the President - Matthew Sheehy Whew! The last half of December 2014 and first half of January 2015 were some super tough days for yours truly and the rest of the SCSP Board. On December 18th, I got a call from Godspell Director, Mario Razo, telling me that for a variety of reasons we would not be able to proceed with the musical at this time. I was shocked and deeply saddened by this news as I, and the entire group, had been so looking forward to staging our first musical in over 15 years. But more than shocked and saddened, I was actually extremely glad it happened on that day and not a few days later as I had, that very same day, instructed our Treasurer, Sharon Kusch, to send Theatre Maximus a check for nearly $1000.00 to secure the rights to produce the play on our stage. Let me tell you that was a WHEW! moment. We dodged the bullet and saved our precious cash. So, the bad news we don t have Godspell for Spring 2015, the good news we saved our money. How about some more good news? Well, we do still intend on producing this show! We are now looking at the Fall of 2015 or the Spring of 2016 as our new target dates. Hooray! Mario announce to his cast on January 12th (we decided to hold off on the announcement in hopes that we might be able to sort out some of the issues and save the show, but this was not feasible) that we would not be able to produce the show at this time and he invited all of the cast members to return when we made out next attempt. On Jan 21st, the SCSP Board of Directors met and selected a new script (see The Kitchen Witches below) to replace Godspell. Mario Razo immediately volunteered to direct this replacement show, so all looked bright in the SCSP kingdom, until 3 days later when Mario withdrew his bid to direct due to his commitment to another theater group and to another show. So, within the span of a single month we lost not one, but two productions. Talk about TOUGH! WHEW! We on the Board have not lost hope, however. We have a good script (please read the synopsis below) and, if we can locate a director, we should still be able to put on a production by the late Spring of 2015. So, give it some thought dig deep we can rise above these issues and we can pull this out! Thank you. S]ript In S_[r]h of [ Dir_]tor Hello Everyone, We have a script titled The Kitchen Witches by a Canadian playwright, Caroline Smith. This is a relatively new script having had its premiere in 2005. It s a comedy with just 4 characters (2 F and 2 M). Synopsis: Isobel Lomax and Dolly Biddle are two "mature" cable-access cooking show hostesses who have hated each other for 30 years, ever since Larry Biddle dated one and married the other. When circumstances put them together on a TV show called The Kitchen Witches, the insults are flung harder than the food! Dolly's long-suffering TV-producer & son Stephen tries to keep them on track, but as long as Dolly's dressing room is one inch closer to the set than Isobel's, it's a losing battle, and the show becomes a rating smash as Dolly and Isobel top both Martha Stewart and Jerry Springer! What we need is a director for this script. If you are a qualified director (i.e., you ve been an assistant director on an SCSP production, or have directed a skit for the SCSP) and you d like to read this script, please contact me ASAP at scsplayersorg@yahoo.com and we can talk about this production. Thank you!
