OFIS News September-October 2015 Principal s Post By: Jordan B. I went to Mr. Svec s office and asked him a few questions. Question: Have there been any problems with kids running to or from the buses lately? Answer: Since reminding students of the importance of being safe when walking to and from the buses, the number of students running has declined significantly. Question: Have there been any incidents on the playground and or blacktop, like has anyone been running, falling and hurting themselves, lately? Answer: Although I know student are bummed about the new, no tag rule, it has helped to reduce the number of students injured on the playground. Question: Do you like the way Mr. and Mrs. Judson are doing the morning show (Bulldog Broadcast)? Answer: I am really excited about the new format. Soon, students will be taking part in the process of creating the show and who knows...that could be the beginning of a very lucrative career for them in broadcasting. Meet Mr. Bennett! By: Skylar B. I interviewed Mr. Bennett, our new P.E. teacher, and I asked him some questions. Here are his responses to them! If you could be in any book what would it be? My favorite book I read growing up was the BFG by Roald Dahl. If you were stuck in traffic what would you do to pass the time? When I was younger, my family would take a lot of trips and we would always drive. We drove everywhere; the furthest we ever drove was San Diego, CA. One game that we would play in the car was the State license plate game. We would try to see how many license plates we could find on those trips and we would keep track of them on a book that we traveled with. What s your favorite color? My favorite color is blue. If you were stuck on a deserted island what are two things you would have to have? If I were stuck on a deserted island the two things I would need to have would be my wife and sun block because I burn very easily! Did you always want to be a P.E. teacher? I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I was young. I have always looked up to my dad, and he s the reason I am a teacher today. He was a Math teacher, and a girls basketball coach, so with him being a basketball coach, I grew up in the gymnasium. Have you taught anything besides physical education? I also teach Health Education at the High School. What s your favorite subject when you were in school? My favorite subject in school was Social Studies. I really enjoyed U.S. History, especially the American Revolution and the Civil War eras and I also liked to look at maps so I was into Geography as well. If I didn t become a P.E teacher, I think I probably would ve tried to become a Social Studies teacher. What caused you to be a physical education teacher? I like all different types of sports and I also like working with young people and teaching them new skills and techniques, so this is the perfect job for me! What s your favorite animal? My favorite animal is a tiger. If you were a football coach what would you do with your team? If I were a football coach I would prepare my team as much as possible. I think preparation in all parts of life are important for success. The saying is if you fail to prepare, you are preparing to fail. What it means is that if you are not ready to put the work in, and get ready for your next assignment, you can t expect to do well. What s your favorite sport? I like all different sports. I played soccer, basketball, and baseball for my high school team.in the summers I spend all of my time golfing. My favorite sport is the sport I am playing at the time but as I learn new sports I have begun to enjoy them as well.
Meet Mrs. Krakowiak! By: Katie I asked Mrs. Krakowiak, our new art teacher, some questions and this is what she said. My first question was, Is teaching 4th and 5th easier or harder than teaching high school art? Mrs. Krakowiak said, There are challenges at both levels. Then I asked, What kinds of projects are the 4th and 5th graders doing this year? She said, Students will be doing projects in drawing, painting, sculpture, and ceramics. I also asked who her favorite president is and why. She answered, Abe Lincoln because he freed the slaves. I asked her what the hardest project she did with her high school students was and she said, A plaster carving in sculpture class." She said art is important in everyday life because, Art promotes creative thinking, and it lets us share our feelings. She told me about her favorite art tools. She said, I love to paint! Paintbrushes are my favorite tool. I asked Why did you choose art as career? She said, Making art makes me happy, and I love showing others how to make art. I said, What is your favorite thing to draw? She responded I enjoy drawing all subjects. I don t really have a favorite. My last question was Would you rather meet a tv star or a movie star, who would it be and why? Mrs. Krakowiak said, Meeting anyone famous would be exciting! Meet Mrs. Krock! By: Reagan C. I interviewed Mrs. Krock, our technology education teacher. Here is what she had to say! If you could go anywhere in the world where would it be? Anywhere, I could be in a lagoon, tidal pool, looking for critters,(salt water preferably) with my boys. What are your favorite three colors? Purple, Green, Blue Have you ever had any pets, if so how many? 1 dog - Holy, 3 hamsters - Marble 1, Marble 2, and Marble 3 What is your favorite few words that you have ever used? - Fiddlesticks (when things don t go well) - Turkey-Lurkeys (kids in my class) - Pumpkin Pie, Boo, Bear, Sweetie Pie (loving terms) - Work with me! People! (When people are not listening or following directions) If you could draw a picture right now what would it be? I am very poor at drawing so this is a tough question. I avoid drawing at all cost! Sorry! I can play french horn and trumpet, though! What is your favorite meal? -Stuffed cabbage or MD stuffed ham perogies Chocolate anything ( was I supposed to include a veggie ) What is your most favorite app you ve ever used? Pandora (music - Music makes me happy! )
Meet Mrs. Miskimins! By: Cort Z. If you were the owner of a football team, what would your team be named? The Oozies If you had $1,000,000, what would you do with it? Own the Cavs What s you favorite type of pop? Diet Coke Meet Mrs. Harb! By: Farrah M. Mrs. Harb is a 5th grade teacher. She is my Science and Social Studies teacher and I wanted to get to know her better, so I asked her a few questions. If you were stranded on an island, what two things would you bring? My family and lots of water to drink. Would you rather live with people and not talk to them or not live with them but talk to them everyday? Oh, I could NEVER not talk to my friends and family! So, I d rather not live with them, but be able to talk to them. What is your favorite costume that you have worn? I think Olive Oyl from Popeye! If you coud make up your own world, what would it have? More patience and peace. In my dream world, winter would only last a month, and kids would never get sick. What is your dream job? I get to do what I love every day. Would you rather be bad at dancing and dance in public, or be bad at singing and sing in public? I d rather embarrass myself by being a bad dancer.
Meet Mr. Sunkle! By: Kaylee S. I interviewed Mr. Sunkle, the new 4th grade math teacher. Here are some pretty cool things I learned about him in this interview. Why are you a math teacher in the first place? I love math and I have always loved working with and helping kids. I have wanted to be a teacher since I was in the fourth grade and I just ran with it from there. Math being my favorite subject in school made this an easy choice for me. Why did you become a teacher in Olmsted Falls? Previous to teaching at OFIS, I had taught seventh and eighth grade math at a school in Cleveland. I knew that I wanted to make a change and I have always had great respect for Olmsted Falls and had always heard great things about the teachers and school system. I am honored to be working with great people and look forward to coming to work each and every day. If you could be an animal, what would you be? If I was an animal, I would be a dog. I love dogs and they are man s best friend, so that is what I would want to be. When you were a child, what was your favorite book? It is hard for me to choose one book, but I can choose a series that was my favorite. When I was younger, Goosebumps was all I wanted to read. As I got a little older, I really got into Harry Potter, which is by far, my favorite series of books to this date. Who is your hero and why? My heroes would be my parents because they have always encouraged me in everything that I did and they have always been fantastic to me. Who is your favorite basketball player? This is a really hard question for me to answer. Basketball is my favorite sport, so I am a fan of a lot of players. If I was talking about current players I would say Kyrie and Lebron are my favorite. If we are talking about previous NBA players/all-time I would go with Mark Price and Michael Jordan. Thanks Mr.Sunkle for letting me interview you. Meet Mrs. Hawk! By: Elsa G. Mrs. Hawk helps with reading and math. She is very nice and kind. Her favorite holiday is Christmas. Her favorite place to go on vacation is Tennessee. Her favorite color is green. Mrs. Hawks favorite restaurant is Chipotle or Panera. Her favorite books are Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and anything by Roald Dahl. Mrs. Hawk has three kids- Rylin is 4, and Cameryn 1 and Max are 1 year old twins. 2
Student Council Updates By: Kara W. I asked Mrs. Rodgers, the student council advisor, some questions. Here is what she had to say. What do you do in student council? In student Council we plan fun days and service projects to build school spirit and to build a strong sense of community among the students and staff. What is the next project you might do next? The last week in October was Red Ribbon Week, and at the first all Member Meeting, members will decide on our December service project. Are you still doing the door decorating contest? Judging for the door decorating contest was held on Monday, October 26th. The fourth grade hallway won! Do your students come up with stuff right away or not right away? Student Council members often come to meetings,the ideas get bounced around and often grow into something even better than they originally wanted to have happen. Do a lot of people like student council? I think kids in Student Council enjoy being involved, especially when we collect items like toys or food and then have to sort pack,and deliver the donations. It is a lot of fun to work together. Facts About a Very Special Planet By: Rachel C. Saturn 1. Saturn is made up of a big ball of gas. 2. Saturn s rings are partly made of ice. 3. Saturn has 62 moons. 4. If there was a tub big enough to hold Saturn. Saturn would float.
Bowling By: Jordan B. Bowling is going very well and all the teams are doing amazing! I decided to interview one of the Buckeye Lanes staff members. These are the questions that I asked Tyler (Position- Front desk). Question: About how many times do you get dead balls out of the lanes? Answer: A couple on Sundays. Question: Does it get annoying having to get dead balls? Answer: Very. Question: How long have you worked at Buckeye Lanes? Answer: 3 years. Question: Do you like that the Intermediate and Middle Schools bowl here? Answer: Yeah, it s a lot of fun! That concludes my interview. Thank you for reading! Matilda by Roald Dahl A Book Review By: Annalise Matilda by Roald Dahl is about a girl named Matilda who is super smart but her parents are super mean to her. They yell at her to watch the telly (tv). Matilda goes to school one day and finds out headmistress, Mrs. Trunchbull is a crazy person and has to do something about it using her magical powers. Read Matilda to find out what she does to Mrs. Trumbull. I like Matilda because it is filled with magic, trickery and pranks. It is very funny. Do You Like Recess Before Lunch? By: Caitlin W. I asked five people about whether they like recess before lunch? First, I interviewed Ally,this is what she said, No, because what if you have gym after lunch? You won t have digested your food and your tummy will hurt. Then, I asked John,this is what he said. No because my hands get dirty before lunch. After John, I asked Evan, this is what he said. No because you get all sweaty and it gets on your food. Next,we have Brady, this is what he said, No you re out of energy and you re so hungry. Lastly, I interviewed Emma, this is what she said, No because you can t talk to your friends to make a plan at recess. I have to agree I don t like it either.

Sports Section Lacrosse By: Morgan A. I love playing Lacrosse! It is a very fun sport and it s fun playing Lacrosse games. I play Lacrosse in Rocky River with my friend Anna and a bunch of other girls! We do tons of drills and fun games too! My coaches are very nice and give lots of good tips to us! LACROSSE ROCKS! What Gear do you need for Lacrosse? You do not need a lot of gear for Lacrosse. You just need a stick, mouthguard, goggles, and a ball to play the game. History of Lacrosse Native Americans played Lacrosse. The game began by the ball tossed into the air and the 2 sides trying to catch it. Because of all of the people that wanted to play, a huge group of players threw the ball to each other across the field. How do you play Lacrosse? Lacrosse is an easy and fun game to play. It s like soccer but with sticks. There are 2 goals and only 1 ball. You throw it around with your teammates. Before you start throwing the ball around, there is a face off, 1 person from each team. You throw the ball up in the air and if you catch the ball, you have to throw it to your teammates until they make a goal. Into the Classroom Into the Classroom By: Cort Z. In resource room we are doing something called Planet Zac. In this project we are making rockets, houses, and scripts. The scripts are what we record after every mini project. We write the scripts. There are 5 days in Planet Zak project. Between every day we do a mini project like getting food and making a landing device. This is one example of a project we completed in Resource Room with Mrs. Miskimmons. Into the Classroom With Mrs. Krakowiak By: Monica G. I love Art! This year I created a spooky haunted house! We also made a leaf out of clay and we added berries, acorns or even a caterpillar! We also did a project for our name. We wrote our name on a big piece of paper and then we made it into bubble letters and added texture. I really like art this year with Mrs. Krakowiak!
