PRAGUE, SALZBURG & VIENNA A MUSICAL CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR DECEMBER 20, 2018 JANUARY 3, 2019 TOUR LEADER: ROBERT GAY FINAL PROGRAM

PRAGUE, SALZBURG & VIENNA A MUSICAL CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR Tour dates: December 20, 2018 - January 3, 2019 Tour leader: Robert Gay Tour Price: $10,180 per person, twin share Single Supplement: $2,250 for sole use of double room Booking deposit: $500 per person Recommended airlines: Qantas and Emirates Maximum places: 20 Itinerary: Prague (5 nights), Salzburg (4 nights), Vienna (5 nights) Date published: June 28, 2018 Overview Academy Travel is delighted to once again offer its musical Christmas and New Year tour, this time travelling from Prague to Vienna. This 15-day tour visits three of the great musical capitals of Central Europe Prague, Salzburg, and Vienna all of which will be decked in their winter finery and ablaze with festive light. The tour will feature nine fine performances in historic venues, including the Rudolfinum in Prague and the renowned Vienna State Opera, along with visits to places where the great composers lived and worked. The itinerary begins in Prague, where we explore the rich musical heritage of the city from the baroque to the twentieth century and visit some of its many fine museums and galleries. We then travel through the beautiful winter landscape to Salzburg, Mozart s birthplace and a sophisticated alpine city. Our final stop, Vienna, combines an unrivalled musical heritage with joyous New Year celebrations, in which we will participate. Music educator and experienced tour leader Robert Gay will provide introductions to all performances, as well as giving an expert background to the musical heritage of the places you visit. Centrally located four and five-star hotels, many meals, tipping and the best-available tickets to performances are all included. Walking tours and museum visits with an emphasis on music round out the program. Your tour leader For over 25 years, Robert Gay has presented music history courses for the Centre for Continuing Education at the University of Sydney. Over the same period he has designed and escorted more than 80 musical and cultural tours to Europe and America. Enquiries and bookings For further information and to secure a place on this tour please contact Jamal Fairbrother at Academy Travel on 9235 0023 or 1800 639 699 (outside Sydney) or email jamal@academytravel.com.au On tour, Robert will provide a thorough introduction to the performances you see, with detailed pre-performance talks and postperformance reviews. Robert s approach to music is multi-faceted. First and foremost, he links the music to the biographical, historical and social context in which it was created. Secondly, he explains in plain language technical aspects of the music how the composer communicates through sound. Finally, as a trained singer who attends dozens of performances each year, he offers great insight into the qualities of the performances you see on tour. Robert s enthusiasm for music is infectious, and his skills as an educator and tour leader are exceptional. Since 2010, he has led tours exclusively for Academy Travel. There is no doubt that it was Robert Gay s leadership that made the trip such a memorable experience. He was brilliant in every way. His encyclopaedic knowledge of music and generosity in sharing it added immeasurably to everything we did. His meticulous planning and careful attention to detail made the logistics very easy for us all. Feedback from Switzerland to Spain: a musical adventure, April 2015

To give you an indication of the level of physical fitness required to participate on our tours, we have given them a star grading. Participation criteria for this tour This Grade Two tour is designed for people who lead active lives and can comfortably participate in up to five hours of physical activity per day on most days, including longer walking tours, climbing stairs, evening performances and a more demanding tour schedule: You should be able to: keep up with the group at all times walk for 4-5 kilometres at a moderate pace with only short breaks stand for a reasonable length of time in galleries and museums tolerate uncomfortable climatic conditions such as cold walk up and down slopes negotiate steps and slopes on historic sites, which are often uneven and unstable get on and off a large coach with steep stairs move your luggage a short distance if required A note for older travellers If you are more than 80 years old, or have restricted mobility, it is highly likely that you will find this itinerary challenging. Temperatures ranging from - 1.5 C to 4 C during the day to lows of - 4 C after dark. Rainfall is not heavy; however, it is reasonable to expect light rain on several days, and the possibility of snow.

Tickets to a sold-out concert by the Berlin Philharmonic? A worldfamous art fair? Access to private homes and gardens? Behind-the-scenes visits? Many of our tours feature access to places and events that are usually not offered on most group tours. Expert tour leaders We work closely with a team of academically qualified and highly experienced tour leaders. They don t just rattle off the facts they help us plan our itineraries and, on tour, freely share their deep knowledge and genuine passion.
