Funded by The Esmée Fairbairn Fundatin, Embedded places a selectin f cmpsers frm a range f disciplines int extended relatinships with leading natinal arts rganisatins. Embedded is a bespke prgramme, prviding practical hands-n experience and a range f significant creative pprtunities. S far ver frty artists have benefited frm Embedded, and there is verwhelming evidence that it can be a transfrmatinal experience in terms f talent develpment, artistic ambitin, prfessinal experience and grwing netwrks. As part f the Embedded prgramme, Sund and Music and Red Nte are ffering an pprtunity fr a cmpser t spend eighteen mnths in residence with the ensemble. This residency prvides a rich prfessinal develpment pprtunity fr a keen self-starter with ambitin and strng ideas. The successful applicant will have the pprtunity t gain experience in bth creating and presenting new wrk. The residency prvides supprt and space t develp creative ideas and cmpsitinal practice as well as gaining experience in prducing and presenting new wrk. Red Nte welcme crss-media wrk and explre nn-cnventinal perfrmance spaces and event frmats; they create events acrss Sctland. This pprtunity wuld suit smene with ideas and ambitin acrss all aspects f cntemprary music perfrmance, fr example smene wh aspires t setting up their wn new music ensemble, r wh has an interest in prducing, as well as cmpsing, new music. The pprtunity is fcused n artistic develpment, and the successful applicant will be encuraged t explre their ideas and creative practice. We want t fster netwrks between Embedded cmpsers and creative discussin acrss musical disciplines, s the pprtunity als encmpasses sessins where all the current participants in ur Embedded residencies meet and share ideas at Away Days. Scpe: This residency prvides an pprtunity t cnceive, develp and deliver an event which incrprates a new wrk fr the ensemble which engages with Red Nte s cmmitment t explring new cntexts fr, and appraches t, cntemprary music. The selected applicant has the pprtunity t immerse themselves in Red Nte s activities, spending at least tw days a mnth (n average) with the ensemble, in additin t writing time. This might include getting invlved with regular nights in city venues r rural turing.

The scpe f the final wrk is flexible, in terms f instrumental frces, cmpsitinal methd and media, and can be decided by the resident cmpser and the Red Nte Directrs. Rehearsals and wrkshps can be timetabled t test ideas and develp the wrk ver the residency perid. The package fr the pprtunity includes: agreed expenses fr travel and accmmdatin within the UK a bursary f 2,000 t cver the selected cmpser s time including the writing f new wrks agreed budget fr develping wrk and prductin f an event Details f the develpment prcess: Get t knw the Red Nte Ensemble s eths by engaging with their activity thrughut the 18 mnth residency. There will be pprtunities t be invlved with main seasn and satellite events, such as Nisy Nights and educatin wrkshps as well as rural turing which culd wrk ut at circa 2 nights per mnth (circa 36 days ver the 18 mnth perid). Attend an Embedded sessin during the residency perid and share ideas with the ther participating artists. Participate in a Perfrmance Caching prgramme run by Sund and Music, if desired. Perfrmance Caching is a ne-t-ne relatinship that supprts a persn t imprve aspects f their perfrmance at wrk r wrk-life balance. This may include fcus n particular wrking relatinships, delegatin r decisin-making as well as verall career directin and fcus. Selectin prcess A selectin panel will shrtlist individuals fr interview. The reading panel will include Red Nte s Artistic Directrs Jhn Harris and Rbert Irvine, a member f the Sund and Music team and a relevant cmpser. Interviews will take place in early August 2015. The selected cmpser/artist will be chsen fllwing the interview. Eligibility yu must be resident in the UK at the time f applicatin and fr the duratin f the scheme yu must nt be in full time undergraduate educatin yu must be available fr interview in Lndn n the appinted date / timeframe yu must be available t jin ther Embedded artists with Sund and Music fr 1 away day this pprtunity must represent a significant develpment pprtunity fr yu we suggest yu shuld be able t invest circa 10 weeks f time in residence thrughut see the Scpe fr mre specifics n each pprtunity yu may apply fr mre than ne Sund and Music prfessinal develpment scheme (Embedded and Prtfli) but n single cmpser may take up parallel residencies within any ne scheme. E.g. yu may nly take up ne residency at any ne time. If yu chse t d s, please submit separate applicatins fr each call. n single cmpser can take up mre than tw cnsecutive residencies (Embedded/Prtfli) within any ne scheme. E.g. A Prtfli residency fllwed by anther Prtfli residency. Hwever yu may take up tw different schemes cnsecutively, prviding each residency presents a significant develpment pprtunity fr yu. a cmpser engaged in a current Sund and Music prject (e.g. Adpt a Cmpser, Cmpser-Curatr, Turing, Higher Educatin Prgramme) may apply t a residency in a different scheme and vice versa. E.g. yu can take up a Prtfli r Embedded residency at the same time as anther prject. Sund and Music actively seeks t encurage a diversity f applicants t its prgrammes. Other recent cllabratins include the ensemble s Reels t Ragas prject with tabla player Kuljit Bhamra and piper Fraser Fifield, while highlights fr 2015 are set t include a new sng cycle by Rry Byle (with mezz-spran Karen Cargill), perfrmances at the Bath and City f Lndn Festivals, and autumn visits t Ireland, Barcelna and Mscw. In 2016 Red Nte will cllabrate with the Antwerp-based ensemble I Slisti n a Eurpean tur f Luis Andriessen s De Staat. Red Nte is Assciate Cntemprary Ensemble at the Ryal Cnservatire f Sctland in Glasgw, an Assciate Cmpany f the Traverse Theatre Edinburgh and Assciate Ensemble f the Sund Festival Aberdeen. Appearances n BBC Radi 3 include the premiere f Stephen Mntague s Three Fables frm the Purcell Rm in Lndn.
