ntroduced in 1905 with Rip Van Winkle, Rackham s illustrated gift books were issued in two primary formats: the deluxe edition, typically a signed limited edition bound in vellum, printed on handmade paper, with the colour plates mounted, or tipped-in, on thick paper, with captioned tissue guards. These were published at the same time as the normal trade editions of the book, case-bound in cloth, with the plates printed on ordinary plate paper. Occasionally the publisher issued improved versions of the trade editions with special leather bindings. It was George Harrap who hit on the idea of a Rackham special, the most exclusive format of Rackham s books. From The Vicar of Wakefield on, Harrap held back the first dozen or so copies from the deluxe edition, had them bound in fine morocco (goatskin) by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, decorated in gilt with tools designed by Rackham, and asked Rackham to add a unique original watercolour sketch to the limitation page. This collection includes every title treated by Rackham in this fashion. Rackham had been long-established as a commercial book illustrator before he came to dominate the Edwardian deluxe gift book market. This catalogue is arranged in two sections; the first contains works wholly by Rackham issued in deluxe limited editions; the second contains a wide selection of his commercial work in books, magazines, and periodicals, together with some posthumous catalogues and related ephemera. Within each section, the items are arranged by date following the publication order given by Riall. Bibliographies cited Latimore, Sarah Briggs, & Grace Clark Haskell. Arthur Rackham, a Bibliography. The exhibition also attracted the admiration of J. M. Barrie, who would commission Rackham s next book. Latimore & Haskell, p. 26; Riall, p. 69. 6,500 [112975] 4

London: Hodder & Stoughton, [1912] Elephant folio. Original full vellum portfolio, titles to front cover gilt, with the original ivory silk ties laced to a large bow at the spine and with two pairs of ivory silk ties carefully supplied to style to the fore edges. In the original green cloth-sided card box with full-page printed paper label to front. Housed in a custom green quarter morocco solander box. 12 large proof-size colour plates mounted in mats, with captioned tissue guards, by Rackham. The box a little worn in places, but a fine copy, a remarkable survival of this luxurious presentation. deluxe extra-limited edition, number 13 of 100 copies signed for the publisher and printer on the limitation page and each plate signed on the mount by the artist, bound in full vellum. According to Latimore & Haskell, although Rackham was supposed to sign all 100 copies, the artist confessed that he had signed only about 20 of them. Copies numbered 101 to 600 were issued in a half vellum portfolio with green cloth sides; none of these was signed by Rackham. The Peter Pan Portfolio reproduces 12 of Rackham s favourite illustrations at their original size. Barrie wrote enthusiastically of Rackham s originals, which he had seen exhibited at the Leicester Galleries, I like best of all the Serpentine with the fairies, and the Peter in his night-gown sitting in the tree. Next I would [sic] the flying Peters, the fairies going to the ball (as in the tiff and the fairy on cobweb) the fairies sewing the leaves with their sense of fun (the gayest thing this) and your treatment of snow (Ray 329). Barrie s comments seemingly influenced Rackham s selection, as the portfolio includes all the images the author mentioned. Latimore & Haskell p. 39; Riall p. 113. 30,000 [113284] 20

London: Hodder & Stoughton, [1912] Quarto. Original vellum, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front cover blocked in gilt, pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, green ribbon ties renewed. With the original card slipcase covered in white moiré paper (worn and rubbed, some repairs). Colour frontispiece and 49 colour plates mounted on a greyish brown printed frame, with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Rackham. Spine a little toned, free endpapers browned, two small marginal paper repairs to dedication leaf and pp. 31/32 not affecting text, small marginal stain to first few leaves, else an excellent copy. deluxe edition, issued unsigned and without statement of limitation. This edition is an improved revision of the 1906 edition (item 4 above), with a larger page size, an entirely new setting of type, a new coloured frontispiece, and seven fullpage black and white illustrations not in the earlier edition. The plates are distributed throughout, not gathered at the end as in the 1906 edition. The edition is undated, except for the new drawings, which are dated 1912 within the image. The calligraphic title is printed in grey within a decorative frame printed in pale green, and Limited is not added to the publishers name in the imprint. The running headlines are in an attractive large italic face, with both upper and lower case letters, and each chapter has a head- and tailpiece by Rackham. Latimore & Haskell p. 40; Riall p. 114. 3,500 [112982] 22

Peter Harrington 127 30 30 BARRIE, J. M. Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens... A New Edition. London: Hodder & Stoughton Limited, [c.1920] Quarto. Original green cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front cover gilt, plain endpapers, fore and lower edges untrimmed. With the dust jacket, priced 25/- net on the front flap. Colour frontispiece and 49 colour plates mounted on plain paper, with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Rackham. Spine gently rolled, a touch of rubbing to corners, occasional spotting internally, in the jacket with lightly sunned spine, shallow chipping to corners, short closed tears to edges, and a few surface scratches to front panel; still a fine copy. trade edition, later impression. The publishing firm of Hodder and Stoughton were incorporated as a limited company in December 1919, so copies such as this with Limited in the imprint must date after that. The title page is printed all in black (it was printed in two colours in the 1912 edition), but the book retains the reset 1912 text with the italic running headlines. It has a plain top edge and plain endpapers and is printed on good quality paper stock, with fore and lower edges untrimmed. In this issue, the map of Kensington Gardens is printed upright, on the recto of a single leaf with blank verso, whereas in the deluxe edition it is printed perpendicular on the verso of the contents leaf. Riall notes there are two different green cloths used for the binding of the trade edition, either smooth or textured. The cloth on this copy is an emerald-green linen-grain cloth, presumably Riall s textured variant. The green dust jacket, which repeats the lettering and pictorial designs of the case, has preserved the cloth in notably bright condition. Cf. Latimore & Haskell p. 40 and Riall p. 114. 1,500 [112951] 23

London: Hodder & Stoughton Limited, [1920 or later] Quarto. Original smooth green cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front cover gilt, plain endpapers. With the pictorial dust jacket supplied from another copy, priced 25/- on the front flap, with a repeat of the frontispiece mounted on the front panel. Colour frontispiece and 49 colour plates mounted on plain paper, with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Rackham. Spine faded and worn at ends, a few marks to cloth, some browning internally, chiefly marginal, a good copy in the supplied dust jacket that is a little rubbed but generally fresh and clean. signed by rackham together with a sketch of Solomon Caw the crow, additionally signed by the author, J. M. Barrie, and by Princess Beatrice, the Marchioness of Milford Haven, Princess Marie Louise, and George Frampton, sculptor of the statue of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens commissioned by Barrie in 1912. The volume was very likely signed on the occasion of the Peter Pan Party in aid of Dr Barnardo s, at Claridge s, which was first held in 1920 and continued as an annual event into the 1930s. 31 24

Peter Harrington 127 32 This copy is a later edition, not noted by the bibliographers. The title page is printed in black, with Limited after the publisher s name, as in the preceding item, but the text is altered once more, being typeset from the original 1906 edition (the running headlines all in capital letters), but with the head- and tailpieces from the 1912 new edition incorporated, all printed on slightly coarser paper stock with machine-trimmed edges, resulting in a very slightly shorter book. The map of Kensington Gardens is printed perpendicular, with the uncoloured illustration of Kensington Gardens on the verso. Cf. Latimore & Haskell p. 40 and Riall p. 114. 7,500 [112954] 32 BARRIE, J. M. Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens... A New Edition. London: Hodder & Stoughton Limited, [1920 or later] front free endpaper. A firm, bright copy, in the price-clipped dust jacket that has some wear, rubbing and chips, head of spine restored with tape on verso, overall a very good copy in the original decorative box. A copy from the same edition as the preceding item, with the title page printed in black, the 1906 text setting augmented with the 1912 head- and tailpieces, the map printed perpendicular, and all edges trimmed. The price-clipped jacket, however, has a different illustration mounted on the front panel: A chrysanthemum heard her, and said pointedly, Hoity-toity, what is this? The box has the illustration An afternoon when the Gardens were white with snow mounted on the lid. Laid in to the book is a four-page folding advert for Hodder and Stoughton s illustrated books, undated but giving the price of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens bound in cloth, with 50 colour plates, as 15/- net (the original price was 25/- net). The gift inscription on the front free endpaper is dated October 1931. 2,250 [112966] Quarto. Original smooth green cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front cover gilt, plain endpapers. With the pictorial dust jacket. In the original decorative card box. Peter Harrington 127 34 35 34 RACKHAM, Arthur. Mother Goose... London: William Heinemann, 1913 Octavo. Original blue pictorial cloth, titles to spine and front cover in blue and red, illustrated endpapers, top edge blue. With the dust jacket, priced 6/- net on the spine. Colour frontispiece and 12 colour plates with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, by Rackham. Light spotting to fore-edge, in the dust jacket with moderate spotting and soiling. An excellent copy. first trade edition, first impression. Unusually, the London trade edition of Mother Goose is an entirely different setting of type from the deluxe, with a smaller type area and the illustrations mostly reduced in size. The colour plates are printed within a cream border directly on white paper rather than mounted, all except the Old Mother Goose illustration (also used for the front panel of the dust jacket), which has a black border and is the same size as the deluxe version. This copy conforms to Riall s description of the first of two known trade bindings, except that here the top edge is blue, not green. Riall notes that later issues and editions have plain endpapers. An excellent copy in the moderately soiled dust jacket with chipping to spine ends and edges, paper reinforcement at head of spine verso. first american edition, first printing, published October 1913. The American edition is a substantially different book from the London edition, entirely reset, with a larger page size and the contents expanded from 162 to 279 rhymes. The colour plates are the same large size as the London deluxe edition, printed on plain plate paper, omitting the Old Mother Goose plate, which instead forms the basis of the front cover design. The title page is a sampler design printed in colour that is not in the English edition. Latimore & Haskell pp. 40 41; Riall pp. 115 16. 950 [113097] 27

Colour frontispiece and 11 colour plates with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Rackham. Spine considerably faded with dulling of gilt, extremities rubbed, top edge faded, still a good copy. first trade edition, presentation copy to the artist s sister-in-law Fanny Starkie, inscribed on the half-title with an original ink drawing by Arthur Rackham of a boy and a dog in the rain, To Fannie [sic] with Best Christmas Wishes from Edyth & Arthur Rackham Xmas 1915, the inscription in Arthur s hand except for Edyth s signature. The exact status of this impression is unclear. The bibliographies state that the first impression of the trade edition is in green cloth with pictorial designs and lettering in dark green, with the frontispiece mounted on dark green paper (in our experience, this is always white) and the date 1915 on the title verso. This copy has purple cloth with designs and lettering in gilt and the frontispiece printed directly on plate paper, supposedly signs of later issue, yet with the date 1915 on the title verso. Nevertheless, the book was published for the Christmas market in 1915 and Rackham s dated inscription gives it authority as an early issue. Harrap, with his initial H stamped in gilt on the front cover, and with an original pen-and-ink sketch with red highlights by Rackham on the limitation leaf, depicting a lady with a fan, signed Arthur Rackham, 23 Oct 29. The nature of the paper is such that there can be no preparatory drawing and no alterations. Riall comments that From The King of the Golden River (1932), Harrap issued nine or ten copies, seven being for sale, of a special issue of the first limitation numbers of the limited edition (A New Bibliography of Arthur Rackham, 1994, p. xvi). However, the present example shows that the practice had its origins earlier than 1932: indeed, this copy may represent the earliest example of the format. Each guest was presented with a publishers leather bound edition, and these books had a signed sketch by Rackham on the half-title page (Riall, A New Bibliography of Arthur Rackham, 1994, p. xiii). Although not marked as his, Harrap usually retained copy number 1 for his personal library. Latimore & Haskell pp. 66-67; Riall p. 175. 27,500 [112911] 83 54

Peter Harrington 127 122 RHODES, Thomas. To the Other Side. With Illustrations by Arthur Rackham & Alfred Bryan. And Maps. London: George Philip & Son, 1893 122 122 Quarto. Original brown cloth, front cover with blind ruled panels enclosing a mounted chromolithographic illustration of the Globe turned to show the Atlantic and the locations of Liverpool and Queenstown on the British side, and New York and Chicago on the American side, American flag to the top left-hand corner, inset ship portrait of the White Star liner Majestic to lower left; rear cover with blind panels and Pear s Soap blocked in gilt at centre. Housed in a russet cloth folding box. Numerous illustrations to the text, some full-page, many signed A. Rackham or with his AR monogram. A touch of rubbing and bumping to ends of spines and corners. An excellent copy. first edition, rackham s own copy of his first book, signed and inscribed by him on the front free endpaper, This is the first book that came out with my illustrations. The cloth format was published in March 1893, priced two shillings, at the same time as the edition in wrappers, priced one shilling. Laid in is a two-page autograph letter from Rackham on his Stilegate letterhead to the bibliographer and antiquarian bookseller John Carter, dated 25 January 1936: I m afraid that I don t know where you ll find To the Other Side. Since [Eric] Osborne [of booksellers Dawsons of Pall Mall] discovered two in my possession & sold them for me, I have discovered one belonging to my brother & have just sold it for him. But no-one seems to know of the existence of any others. Osborne went to the publishers (Phillips the map people) & they couldn t even find out that they had ever published such a book if publication it can be called. The author, also, told Osborne he had no copy & knew of none. I expect that very few copies escaped the wastepaper basket... Also laid in is a subsequent letter of 20 February the same year on the stationery of Charles Scribner s Sons, for whom Carter worked as European Agent, from Helen Clampitt to a Mrs Barnum explaining that Carter had been trying to obtain another copy of the book and had written to Rackham: This is his reply, and I thought it might be good fun for you to stick it in the book. Published by the map and guide-book publishers George Philip & Son, To the Other Side was conceived as a promotional device to encourage the English public to experiment with transatlantic travel at the time of the Chicago Exhibition. Rhodes is probably best known as the editor of Rhodes s Steamship Guide. The book is illustrated with drawings in black and white, mostly from photographs. Copac records a single copy at Oxford, none in BL; OCLC adds just three copies, Columbia University, the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, University of Texas, and the University of Louisville.
