The Foot Tappers News May June 2014 Derek Winters Andy Leggett The Georgia Jazzmen

Editorial e-mail :- pjscardiff@btinternet.com Tel :- 029 20625639 April 2014 We have been very fortunate to receive a generous donation from members of the Adamant and Icon Jazz Bands. This has come about by a suggestion, some time ago, from Clarence Nugent, that the monies, that has been lying in dormant accounts of both bands be donated to the PJS. Much of the money originally came from a donation, in 1992, by our first Chairman Harry Cuming who bequeathed the money in his will for the promotion of our music. Permission and agreement from surviving members of both bands was sought which culminated after some very hard, diligent and frustrating work by Clarence in getting the bank to release the money. So for the first time in many years the PJS has a much sounder financial basis in which to work. On behalf of the PJS I would like to thank Clarence and surviving members of both Bands for their generosity. As one member of the Icon said the only representation of our style of music is through the PJS and if the donation can further their aims, then we are more than happy, and would be a fitting memorial to those who have passed on. The Adamant August 1994 The Icon with Steve Norman, Gwyn, Clarence, Martin and Eddie Dec 2009 Some more good news: - We are having a new website. This is being designed by Mireille, who used to work at Café Jazz, and will have all the functionality of the old site but brought into the 21 st Century. Hopefully it will be live by the time you read this Visit the PJS Website :- www.pjscardiff.co.uk 2

Our Programme We have some excellent bands lined up for you in May and June, starting off the month on the 6 th with Spike s 5 and Dime Band. This features Jeff Matthews, Paul Munnery, Sarah Thatcher and Mike Kennedy. My Birthday is in May and for a treat I m choosing the name and line up of the band, up - Alun s Chosen Six. This will feature guest trumpeter Derek Winters if you remember he was the trumpeter who played with the Great Danes, who came to us in October last year. Joining Derek will be John Scantlebury, Paul Munnery, Sarah Thatcher, Steve Davis and Clarence Nugent. So make a note to come along on the 13 th. The Excellent Memphis Six visit us again on the 20 th. This time they will have John Davies on reeds and John Gill on banjo/guitar. Finally on the 27 th, Gwyn Lewis and Friends. Gwyn has found a slot in his busy schedule to visit us and will have Phil Wall, Pete Locke, Steve Davis, Roy Davies and Clarence Nugent playing along with him. June starts of on the 3 rd with a return visit on Django s Dragons. The six piece outfit has two violins, two guitars, an accordion and Double Bass. If Gypsy Jazz is your forte then this is for you. On the 10 th June we have The New Georgia Jazz Band from the Midlands. This features Dave Smith trumpet, Dave Wood clarinet, Ian Dalziel banjo, Stan Stephens on trombone, David Johnson bass and Alan Jones drums. The 17 th brings a new face to Café Jazz although he has been here several years ago, back in 2000 with the Rod Mason Band. It s Andy Leggett, who teams up with his old mate John Gill, with Steve Davis and Pete Locke for company. Andy and John used to play for a band in Bristol called the Titanic Tearoom Quartet, I ve heard CD s and have seen the band live several years ago and I can thoroughly recommend them. So make a note in your diary. We conclude June on the 24 th with the very popular Wessex New Orleans Band with guest John Scantlebury and Peter Winterhart on drums See them all at :- Visit the PJS Website :- www.pjscardiff.co.uk 3

Andy Leggett - in brief Andy was born in Shropshire in 1942, educated at Hull University, got hooked on music in 1958 when he heard skiffle and bought a guitar. Work involved being a technical translator, in French, and working on Concorde. In 1969 started playing with the Pigsty Hill Light Orchestra, in Bristol and has played in numerous bands in Bristol including Alice s Wonderland Band and The Titanic Tearoom Orchestra. In 1996 he left Bristol and lived in Germany playing Clarinet and Soprano Sax in The Rod Mason Band. Andy s playing is heavily influenced by Sidney Bechet and often plays ;- Petite Fleur, The fish Seller, Dans Les Rue d Antibes and more. I m sure you will enjoy seeing him perform at Café Jazz on 17 th June. Photo Gallery Band Appearing at Café Jazz John Davies Quintet Denis Mahoney tpt, John clt.
