History Stereoscopes and stereoscopic photographs became a popular form of home entertainment in the 1850s and continued to be popular into the 1930s. A stereoscopic photograph contains two almost identical photographs side-by-side, with the left photograph representing the left-eye view and the right photograph representing the right-view. When viewed through a stereoscope, the image becomes threedimensional. Early stereoscopes were developed by Sir Charles Wheatstone and David Brewster and later developed into more well-known stereoscopes such as the View-Master. Collection Overview This collection includes stereoscopic photographs of views in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The photographs were developed by local photographers, although a few compmanies were based in other Northeastern states. Popular views represented in the collection inclue the Washington Elm, the Longfellow House, and Christ's Church in Harvard Square.
