MUSIC @ Terra Nova School

Welcome from the Head of Music Welcome to the Music programme at Terra Nova School. Participation in Music is a fun and enjoyable experience for pupils at Terra Nova School. We aim for each pupil to achieve on a personal level whilst developing their music skills, building confidence and self esteem through collaboration with their peers. Music is an inclusive subject with all pupils being given the opportunity to showcase their talent, at a level appropriate to their ability, at least once every term through ensemble and choral concerts. It is an expectation that pupils will represent the School at community events, periodically throughout the academic year. It is the responsibility of the pupil and parent to check the Music calendar to ensure pupils bring the correct musical equipment to School. If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to email me at james.westall@tnschool.co.uk Mr James Westall Head of Music with Performing Arts 2

Year 1 and Year 2 curriculum In Year 1 and Year 2 pupils listen carefully and respond physically to a wide range of music. They play musical instruments and sing a variety of songs from memory.they begin to create short compositions, exploring how sound and silence can create different moods and effects.they develop their rhythmic skills and focus on note values, learning how to distinguish them aurally and visually. Music lessons are fun and interactive exploring different performance skills and working towards end of term nativities and concerts. 4

Year 3 and Year 4 curriculum All pupils take part in a range of activities that integrate performing, composing, listening and appraising. Performing - pupils develop their singing voices with a focus on pitch, diction, breathing, and musical expression. Year 3 will be learning how to play the violin and Year 4 Samba instruments. Composing - pupils use the elements of music to create soundscapes as a response to differing stimuli, such as poetry, art, or a story. They explore how instruments can be used to create differents effects and moods, and learn to organise sounds to match them. Listening and Appraising - pupils are exposed to a wide variety of music from different times and cultures, and respond to them. They learn about how the music is produced, how music can be used to influence and inspire, and how to describe what they can hear using correct musical terminology. 5

Instrumental Lessons At Terra Nova School we offer individual lessons on the following instruments. Lessons are 18.50 each, and are taught on a one to one basis by one of our specialist visiting music teachers. Lessons take place term time on a rotating timetable, in one of the purpose built music practice rooms: Piano Voice Theory Violin Cello Harp Clarinet Flute Saxophone Trumpet Trombone Guitar Drum kit 8

Syllabus Pupils who play guitar and drums follow the Rockschool syllabus. Other instruments follow the ABRSM syllbus. Promising singers are put forward for the National Youth Choir of Great Britain. To encourage a love of ensemble performance we encourage our instrumentalists to join both the string group and the orchestra.. ABRSM Examinations The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) is the UK s largest music education body, one of its largest music publishers and the world s leading provider of music examinations, offering assessments to over 600,000 candidates in over 90 countries every year. ABRSM s mission is to inspire achievement in music. In partnership with the Royal Schools of Music, they support high-quality music-making and learning around the world. As a test centre for ABRSM, Terra Nova pupils are entered for the ABRSM music exams each term. The pupils have a strong record of gaining merits and distinctions in these examinations. 99

Performing at Terra Nova School Productions Every pupil from Nursery upwards will take part in at least one full scale musical theatre production per year. Class lessons are also used to learn the various songs and choreography for each production. Past productions have included Oliver!, Bugsy Malone, Pirates of Penzance, The Sound of Music, Guys and Dolls, Grease, and The Wizard of Oz. Recitals Each term we hold a music recital for both Junior and Senior Prep in the Jodrell Room, to showcase pupils talents. In addition to this we have an end of term showcase for the larger ensembles to perform. There are also more informal performance opportunities for children to build confirdence and performance skills. We also encourage pupils to enter local music festivals, such as the Alderley Edge Festival, Heaton Mersey Festival, and Bowdon festival. 10

Choirs Terra Nova School has three choirs; Junior (Year 1- Year 4), Senior (Year 5 - Year 8) and by invitation only a specialist chamber choir. They perform regularly at concerts, special services, competitions, and numerous other events in the community. The choirs have performed in Rome, Bruges, Edinburgh and Ghent, and enjoy regular success at the Alderley Edge Festival and the Heaton Mersey Festival. 11
