You Can Walk You Can Dance was commissioned by Farmington High School Friends o Music, in honor o the district s Teacher o the Year, Scott Cabell. Perceptive listeners might glean in the piano s introduction and conclusion a ew quotes rom one o his avorite songs, How Can I Keep From Singing? The cooser is grateul to Molly MacMillan or sharing her knowledge and love o Latin jazz, and or her creative spirit. Elizabeth Alexander grew up in the Carolinas and Appalachian Ohio. Her love o poetry nearly eclipses her love o music a passion which is relected in her over 100 songs and choral works, which have received thousands o perormances worldwide. She lives in St. Paul, MN, where her requent commissions include works or orchestra, chorus, chamber ensembles and solo musicians. A recent McKnight Fellow, she has received awards and ellowships rom the Jerome Foundation, New York Council on the Arts, Wisconsin Arts Board, National Orchestral Association, International League o Women Coosers, and Ameri Coosers Forum. Her coosition teachers have included Jack Gallagher at The College o Wooster, and Steven Stucky, Yehudi Wyner and Karel Husa at Cornell University, rom which she received her doctorate in music coosition. When she is not writing music, Elizabeth shamelessly encourages her teenagers jokes, makes pretty good biscuits, and tends her garden during the three month period in Minnesota that is not winter.
