Outreaching A Critical Junction where Librarian and the Academic Program Meet Jin Moon (jinmoon@ucd.edu) Xi Chen (xic031@ucd.edu) Univerity of California, San Diego Introduction UC San Diego Library Two full-time Eat Aian Librarian Chinee Studie Librarian Korean and Japanee Studie Librarian Multiple program that are impacted Chinee Studie Program Chinee Hitory Program 21 t Century China Center Japanee Studie Program Japan Forum Trannational Korean Studie (only a minor) Korea-Pacific Program Hitory Department School of Global Policy and Strategy A Librarian for Area Studie, we work with multiple department and dicipline and we elf-promote ourelve a well a our ervice and collection. Over the pat 2 year, we have engaged in wide range of outreach activitie: Organizing tabling event Hoting a welcome reception Bringing faculty book talk to the library Setting up a permanent potlight book exhibit Embedding library intruction into academic teaching Co-hoting public event with academic department Showcae library collection and more Thee activitie have demontrated the value of liaion librarianhip in the changing landcape of academic librarie. We feel that outreach i the mot important thing we can do to reach out and learn about our facultie and tudent. The viibility of the librarian i eential. To meet our uer, we tried many different outreach method: Tabling in front of claroom/library walk and going to tabling event for Student Organization (KSA, LiNK, etc) and Departmental Open Houe Going to faculty office hour to meet them 1:1 Attending the faculty meeting Sending out peronalized quarterly newletter Welcome Reception in the Library Faculty Talk in the Library Liaion Peronalized Quarterly Newletter Collection Collection are what draw the uer to the Library and it i alo what they will be uing for their collection. CJK Graded Reading Collection Spotlight Collection Reference Spotlight Collection Graded Reading Collection (project underway) With our outreach effort, mot of the uer are aware of the role of the Eat Aian Studie librarian and come to eek reearch aitance. Navigating non-englih material can be challenging and ometime we have to let the tudent face the reality of that fact that their material might not exit in Englih. Nonethele, the Librarian can point tudent to leer known material and help locate material that are overea through channel other than regular ILL. Intruction We offer baic library intruction coure pecialized coure-integrated intruction baed on requet. tour with ome of the clae to pinpoint the Eat Aian Collection. Coure are taught in the Library claroom in the claroom where are lecture are held. Librarian alo teach general writing clae which preent a great opportunity to connect themelve with tudent who have information need for Eat Aian tudie. For example, Making of the Modern World (MMW) i a general writing cla for Eleanor Rooevelt College Frehmen or Tranfer. The theme for thi cla i very broad and many tudent chooe to write about Aia. Some example topic: Education in Ming Dynaty Samurai honor code v. US Military honor code Korean women activim before the Korean War. Quetion and Next Step How can we enhance our viibility beyond thee? How can we get integrated into the curriculum? Being a Librarian i never ending becaue we get new tudent and new faculty each year. However, through thee activitie, we are able to reach more tudent and faculty and ultimately get integrated into the curriculum. Tabling Event in front of Lecture Hall Collaborating with your department may open new door for the librarian. Alo, viibility of the librarian i eential for both the uer and the librarian. Getting to know the uer will help with collection development a well a planning out intruction.

Supporting Computational Text Analyi in Eat Aian Studie Xiang Li 1 and Yao Chen 2 1Univerity of Colorado Boulder, 2 Univerity of Minneota Text analyi (text mining) i the proce of analyzing large collection of textual material in order to dicover new information (e.g., theme, relationhip and trend). 1-4 Text analyi i more than information retrieval. It draw on information retrieval, data mining, machine learning, tatitic, and computational linguitic. 3 Computational text analyi ha been utilized in a variety of humanitie dicipline. Text analyi look at element uch a word frequencie, co-occurrence, and tatitically generated topic to perform ditant reading of text. Humanit uually perform thi analyi with the help of algorithm developed by computer cientit, tatitician, and linguit. 5 Example: Did J. K. Rowling write the book The Cuckoo Calling? 18000 16000 14000 12000 10000 8000 6000 4000 2000 0 Introduction Number of Scholarly Text Mining Publication 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 Computational text analyi i now rapidly developing in the field of Eat Aian Studie. More cholar are becoming converant in the variety of analytical poibilitie thee technological development make available. We are lowly eeing more original reearch that applie digital analyi in diertation and article. Soon it will find an etablihed place among more traditional mode of cholarly analyi. 6 Example of Computational Text Analyi Application Stylometry i the tatitical analyi of variation in literary tyle. It i ued primarily for authorhip attribution tudie and genre detection. Sample project: Vierthaler explored the complex tylitic relationhip of text in the late Mind and early Qing period in China and found a gradient of tyle that ran from purely fictional work through hitorical romance (novel with hitorical content) and unofficial hitorie 野史 to official hitorical work. 7 Vierthaler ued tylometric and machine learning analye to explore the probable authorhip of the late Ming dynaty novel the Plum in the Golden Vae 金瓶梅. 8 Social network analyi i the mapping and meauring of networked tructure in term of node (individual actor) and link (relationhip or interaction) that connect them. Sample project: Lee examined the 1917-1927 writer-periodical network in Korea and revealed the poition of women writer a a prehitory to the formation of male-centered dongin. 9 So and Long analyzed the tructural relation between poet in early 20 century United State, Japan and China and dicued how the poet interaction help to contitute the field of modernit poetry a a whole. 10 Topic modeling help organize large collection of textual information to dicover topic (theme) that occur in a collection of textual document. Sample project: Shao, Huang and Tai tudy about how the Taiwanee do China Studie applied a topic modeling tool to analyze paper publihed in the Mainland China Studie during 1998-2015. Their reult howed that the article were clutered into even alient topic. 12 Le, Lee and Lee analyzed multi-lingual cutomer comment about Starbuck in ocial network acro US, Korea, Singapore, and Vietnam between 2011-2014. Top poted theme were ummarized to examine Starbuck marketing trategie. 13 Mazanec created a network map of poetry exchange in late medieval China (c. 860-960 CE). 11 Sample Tool R and Python are programming language that are widely applied to a variety of of text analyi project and are compatible with CJK cript. There are ready-to-ue package that allow uer to perform pecific text analyi tak with limited programming kill. HathiTrut Reearch Center contain a uit of tool that could help conduct text analyi project. GIS Hitorical Map Project and Metadata Naomi Shiraihi & Haiqing Lin Univerity of California, Berkeley Introduction 國郡全圖 Ground Control Point Metadata In the changing landcape of digital reearch and open acce, the role of technical ervice librarian are not limited to traditional cataloging. One of the new role we enviion i upporting digital humanitie reearch by organizing, managing, and providing acce to data et via metadata creation and management. To rectify the map, ground control point are needed. Thi i one of the procee where a technical librarian kill are ueful ince finding ground control point in hitorical map may require conulting gazetteer and other reference tool. In thi particular cae, mountain, lake and cape are elected. We created a mock digital map project that compare Japanee hitorical map by uing digital humanitie tool and explored a way that technical ervice librarian can play an important role in digital humanitie reearch. Hitorical Map Hitorical map are unique in that they may not necearily fit into regular geopatial metadata tandard well and thi i where technical ervice librarian can utilize their knowledge and experience. In thi project, we compared Aou Tokei Kokugun Zenzu 國郡全圖 (1837) with Nagakubo Sekiui Kaiei Nihon Yochi Rotei Zenzu 改正日本輿地路程全図 (1779). In the preface of Kokugun Zenzu, the author ay hi map in thi atla were created baed on Nagakubo Sekiui Kaiei Nihon Yochi Rotei Zenzu. However, it i not eay to ee how they are related ince one i an atla and the other i a ingle heet map. So, to compare, we decided to layer a northern part of the map by uing digital tool. When we create metadata for uch a GIS project, information about ground control point hould be included. We believe that uch information i integral to reuability of data, which i a key to ucceful digital humanitie. One of the challenge i to find a file format and chema appropriate to our purpoe. KML i ued here to diplay geographic data. Technical ervice librarian can help reearcher by figuring out conitent vocabularie and metadata tandard. We hope to demontrate the role of controlled vocabulary a a mean to improving the acce to and reuability of data. 改正日本輿地路程全圖

RESEARCH POSTER PRESENTATION DESIGN 2015 Japanee Illutrated Book from the Edo and Meiji Period Japanee Illutrated Book from the Edo and Meiji Period Freer Gallery of Art Library (Smithonian Librarie), Wahington, D.C. OVERVIEW In 2017 The Library of the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery of the Smithonian Librarie digitized 1100 volume of book from the Edo and Meiji Period (1600-1912). The newly digitized 41500 image are now acceible from bibliographic record of the Smithonian Librarie online catalog a well a the Internet Archive and Smithonian Librarie Digital Library ite (http://library.i.edu/digital-library/collection/japaneeillutrated-book) I. Preparing Material Conditioncheck: Conervator examined each volume in term of durability and handling during the capturing proce and identified over 300 volume needing repair rebinding and gluing. One title wa removed from the project due to it fragile condition. II. Preparing Metadata (1) Re-cataloging: -- Verified the accuracy of information in the exiting bibliographic record. -- Added more detailed information for each title, including a full decription of colophon in the vernacular. (2) Aigned an item barcode number to each volume -- Barcode number i ued to identify each volume -- Barcode number i alo ued a the file name aociated with the captured image from each volume. -- Barcode number i the unique identifier for the digital copy of each volume uploaded to the internet Archive. III. Capturing Image Specification & Procedure The baic et- up for the rare Japanee book canning project conited of a 30"x40" reprographic copy tand table with a 60" motorized column. On the column wa mounted a pecialized RCam digital camera with a Phae One IQ180, 80mp digital back and a 72mm Schneider digital len. The lighting ource ued wa 2 ProFoto D1 trobe with trip light oft box modifier. The light were poitioned on either ide of the copy tand table at a 45 angle and adjuted for maximal even illumination. The book were placed in pecially created cardboard upport which upported the cover and pine and allowed the book to open afely to an almot 180 opening. The book and upport were rotated o the pine of the book were alway in line with the light ource, eliminating the poibility of hadow acro the oppoite page. For quality control and meaurement, we ued a FADGI (Federal Agencie Digital Guideline Initiative) compliant Golden Thread color target to analyze our capture performance metric in term of white balance, expoure level, even luminoity and true input PPI value. The operator wa able to trigger the camera uing a foot pedal leaving both hand free to more afely handle the book and turn the page. With thi et up and workflow we were able to average 600-800 double page pread imaged per day from 1 operator and tation. All file were created a Capture One raw file and tored on ite on the company RAID 5 networked erver. Captured file were periodically copied to portable hard drive which were proceed and uploaded to the Internet Archive at the Smithonian Librarie Web Service Department. III. Capturing Image (continue) Book tray One-page v. Two-pagecapturing Many Japanee illutrated book from thi period were deigned to be viewed a one image acro two page. Therefore, it wa important to capture the image a a two-page unit, unlike the tandard wetern book digitization which i done page by page. Mica Treated paper For the page and cover containing mica, we altered our lighting ituation in order to better highlight and illutrate the mica. We needed a broad, oft overhead light ource that would evenly illuminate the page and reflect evenly off the mica to highlight it quality. The room we were working in had a white ceiling that wa not too high and o we incorporated that ceiling into our workflow. For the page and cover with mica, we removed the oft boxe from the light and pointed the light head with no modifier traight up into the ceiling, tranforming the white ceiling into our light ource. Expoure adjutment were made to compenate for the lightly lower light level thi change created. Thi oft and even illumination directly over the page highlighted all the mica area very well while alo illuminating the ret of the page or cover evenly. IV. Pot Capturing Proce (1)Uploaded the image to Internet Archive a the capturing proceeded (2)Created link between Internet Archive, the Smithonian Librarie digital collection and the bibliographical record. (3)Uploaded a thumbnail title page image to the bibliographic record, which link to our digital collection page, Japanee Illutrated Book from the Edo and MeijiPeriod. V. Reviewing / Proofing / Clean-up (1)Page-by-page proofing -- For miing page -- For duplicate page -- For image quality checking -- For page order (2)Reviewed to make ure that link between Internet Archive, the digital collection page on Smithonian Librarie webite and the bibliographic record are all pointing to the correcttitle. VI. Future Plan (1)Create an author/title index for the digital collection page. (2)Add digitized Japanee Edo and Meiji period book held by other Smithonian Librarie branche. (3)Develop a eamle integration between the Library digital collection of Edo and Meiji woodblock printed book and the digital databae of the Freer Gallery of Art collection of book from the ame period. ********* CONTACT: Reiko Yohimura, Head Librarian: yohire@i.edu Digital Library Page: ttp://library.i.edu/digital-library/collection/japaneeillutrated-book) Library Catalog: http://iri-librarie.i.edu www.poterpreentation.com
