Functional Description Satellite System 3 Functional Description 3.1 Satellite System The R&S OSP satellite system is the transparent extension of two R&S OSP module slots via a cable connection or fiber-optic link. The advantages of the OSP satellite system are: Switch modules can be operated on-site. For example, high-frequency relays can be installed and controlled at the shortest possible distance. The non-conductive fiber-optic link avoids electromagnetic interference. The fiber-optic cables allow long distance connections. The fiber-optic cables can be easily fed through the shielding of anechoic chambers. 3.2 Description of the R&S OSP-B200R The option R&S OSP-B200R is the remote control (RC) interface module for operating the R&S OSP satellite unit R&S OSP-B200S. The single-slot RC module is designed to be installed in one of the base units R&S OSP120, R&S OSP130 or R&S OSP150. Functional Description Installing R&S OSP-200R in the R&S OSP Switch Unit 3.5 Installing R&S OSP-200R in the R&S OSP Switch Unit The option R&S OSP-B200R is a one-slot module that can be installed in each of the three R&S OSP base switch unit models; i.e. R&S OSP120, R&S OSP130 or R&S OSP150. A maximum of three module busses is available in an R&S OSP base unit. Figure 3-4: R&S OSP-B200R RC interface module installed in base switch unit The R&S OSP-B200R is typically connected to two internal module busses, which are, per default, the module bus A11 and A12. Therefore, only one additional module can be operated in the R&S OSP base unit. When installing the R&S OSP-B200R into the R&S OSP base unit, you must only connect two interface cables to the R&S OSP mainboard. For the overall satellite system, make the following connections: Base unit to integrated RC interface module RC interface module satellite unit Satellite unit to integrated relay module These interface connections are shown in the the table and drawing below. Satellite Channel R&S OSP base unit to R&S OSP-B200R R&S OSP-B200R to R&S OSP-B200S2 R&S OSP-B200S2 to relay module A A11 (X2) /A12 (X4) or A13 (X13) to R&S OSP-B200R / X101 Use either a connection by Sub-D cable or a fiber-optic connection R&S OSP-B200S2 / X101 Default connection is A11 to X101 B A11 (X2) /A12 (X4) or A13 (X13) to R&S OSP-B200R / X100 Use either a connection by Sub-D cable or a fiber-optic connection R&S OSP-B200S2 / X100 Default connection is A12 to X100 User Manual 1178.6733.02-01 11

For installing any module later on, proceed as follows. 1. Remove a blank panel (if available) from the front side of the satellite unit. 2. Find the flat ribbon cable in the open slot of the satellite unit. (In each slot, A and B, one flat ribbon cable is available.) 3. Connect the flat ribbon cable to the R&S OSP module s connector. 4. Carefully insert the module into the slot 5. Fix the module with the six screws. Figure 3-6: Satellite unit with slot B front panel removed User Manual 1178.6733.02-01 13
Operating the R&S OSP Satellite System R&S OSP Satellite System with Wired Link 4 Operating the R&S OSP Satellite System After installation of the option R&S OSP-200R in one of the R&S OSP base switch unit models R&S OSP120, R&S OSP130 or R&S OSP150, the connection to the satellite needs to be done either by Sub-D cable or by fiber-optic cable. The R&S OSP-B200R/B200S satellite system only can be used in connection with standard R&S OSP modules fitted in the satellite unit. 4.1 R&S OSP Satellite System with Wired Link For remote operation of the satellite unit across a distance of up to 10 m, use the cable R&S OSP-Z200A or R&S OSP-Z200B, as shown below: OSP-B200S Wired Link (with DC) OSP-B200R Connect the Wired Link connector only to the R&S OSP-B200R remote control interface module. Connecting it to any other connector can harm your equipment. In this configuration, the satellite unit R&S OSP-B200S is powered by the R&S OSP base unit via the cable R&S OSP-Z200A or R&S OSP-Z200B. The base unit can supply two R&S OSP modules, each with a maximum of 0.8 A (at 28 V DC). Before powering up the R&S OSP base unit, first connect the remote control interface module R&S OSP-B200R to the satellite unit R&S OSP-B200S2. User Manual 1178.6733.02-01 14
Operating the R&S OSP Satellite System R&S OSP Satellite System with Fiber-Optic Link 4.2 R&S OSP Satellite System with Fiber-Optic Link For remote operation of the satellite unit at a longer distances or inside a shielded room, use the cable R&S OSP-Z201x or R&S OSP-Z202x, as shown below: OSP-B200P AC 100V-200V OSP-B200S FOL OSP-B200R Before powering up the R&S OSP base unit, first connect the remote control interface module R&S OSP-B200R to the satellite unit R&S OSP-B200S2 and switch on the power supply OSP-B200P. Operating the satellite unit R&S OSP-B200S in this configuration always requires the power supply R&S OSP-B200P. 4.3 Switching on the R&S OSP Satellite System When the satellite system is correctly installed and connected, you can switch on the R&S OSP base unit. After booting up, the system status is shown by three LEDs. These LED s are available both in the remote interface module R&S OSP-B200R and in the satellite unit R&S OSP-B200R2. The LEDs show the following status messages: Device Power LED Link/Busy LED Overheat LED Remote interface module R&S OSP- B200R Green when power is ON Continuously yellow when link between remote interface and satellite is established. Flashing yellow during data transfer. -- Satellite unit R&S OSP-B200S2 Green when power is ON Continuously yellow when link between remote interface and satellite is established.
