SUMMER INSTITUTE & FESTIVAL BREVARD, NORTH CAROLINA Composition Scholarships Available b r e v a r d m u s i c. o r g b r e v a r d m u s i c. o r g

Composition at Brevard June 20 - August 3, 2014 The composition program offers special opportunities for a select group of young composers. Enrollment is limited. The Program Brevard s composition faculty provides instruction through weekly private lessons and a daily seminar. While in residence, students produce new works which are performed in a series of public concerts. Students collaborate closely with Brevard s new music ensemble, itch, comprised of instrumentalists in the College Division who have demonstrated ability and interest in the performance of new music. The annual New Songs program has proved popular. All student composers set the same text, and singers from Brevard s opera company perform the new songs on a public concert. During the last week of the season, each of Brevard s student ensembles devotes a session to reading and recording new student works.

On Campus Composition students spend most of their time in the composition lab, a pair of adjoining rooms housing MIDI keyboards, printers, and audio equipment. Students bring their own computers, so may use whatever notation software they elect. Each year composition students perform as members of the BMC Chorus. Past seasons have included performances of Grieg s Complete Incidental Music to Peer Gynt, Mahler s Symphony No. 3, Orff s Carmina Burana, Holst s The Planets, and a concert of Bach cantatas. 2014 Visiting Artists In 2014, Brevard welcomes the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), the Shanghai String Quartet, and Conrad Tao. These renowned artists will present concerts, classes, and seminars focusing on new music and contemporary performance practices. Audition Requirements Applicants should send a portfolio that includes at least 2 scores and recordings. Composers must upload audio and pdf files to our server through the BMC application. brevardmusic.org/institute

He currently serves as Director/Chair of the Music Department at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. David Dzubay Indiana University Jonathan Sokol is currently on the composition faculty of Baldwin Wallace University. His music has been performed by the Cleveland Chamber Symphony, the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, the Bloomington and Kokomo Symphony Orchestras, and the Indiana University New Music Ensemble, as well as read by members of the Cleveland Orchestra. Robert Aldridge Rutgers University David Dzubay is chair of the Composition Department and Director of the New Music Ensemble at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
