A brief introduction to various forms of Chinese methods of determining one s destiny (Part II of II) In our last issue we discussed some of the Chinese methods of determining one s destiny. In this issue, we will further discuss some other forms like Zhan Gua Wen Shi, Feng Shui, Face Reading and Palmistry. Zhan Gua Wen Shi ( 占卦问事, Divination by means of the Eight Trigrams or other systems) This form of divination refers to a general group of divination by means of various mediums such as Poker Cards, Tossing of coins, Shaking of the bamboo sticks, Counting of animals, basing on the environmental objects or feedback, Timing of the question or event, etc. These are all forms of divination that are similar to the Yi Jing Divination mentioned above. They use various methods to come up with certain numbers or to rig up a chart which would help to answer the question being asked. Each may have its own system of rigging the chart or plotting the representation, where some resembles those of the Yi Jing, Ba Gua Trigram or even other forms of divination, the rely very much on the energy vibrations of the subject and the master. These divinations are commonly seen available beside famous temples or places of worship. It is also generally very affordable. It is very flexible and a master can give an answer to a question in many different situations (depending on the medium being used). It is easy to learn and usually, the form of divination being used are not very complex as these systems were developed to answer very specific questions like money, wealth, health, relationship, etc. One can use these form of divination to make comparison of different items (for example, if one is being offered three different jobs, which is better and how are they in comparison, by using poker card divination, such questions can be easily answered.) At times, the readings are more intuitive and difficultlt to teach. This is because the analysis is actually very subjective to the knowledge, emotions and state of mind of an interpreter of the hexagram. As this form of divination requires a match of energy (from the subject to the master or interpreter and vice versa), it is very susceptible to the poor energies, doubt and lack of concentration of either persons, resulting in a less accurate reading. Feng Shui ( 风水, Geomancy) Feng Shui involves the reading of the energy of a location and the flow of the qi (commonly interpreted as energy flow) within the building or house or space, it can also be used to foretell what may happen in a household or an office space based on the objects being placed and the way the energy is flowing within the specific space. Feng Shui, strictly speaking, is not a form of divination for fortune telling. In its actual 2
form, Feng Shui is the study of the flow of energy (both internal and external) of a house/office space. Based on the interactions of the external objects and formation of the shapes and representation of some items, a master can foretell what type of problem can happen at a specific location at a certain time. Based on the internal objects and the location and significance that it takes and also the usage and planning of the space, with certain conditions and specific timing, different bad things or good things may occur. Thus the decoding and encoding of such knowledge is the purpose of Feng Shui. In Chinese culture, Feng Shui is primarily used to ward off bad energy and welcome auspicious events. Feng Shui is divided into two major parts, one is the study of the burial of the deceased ( 阴宅, Yin Zhai) and the other is the usage of the space for the living ( 阳宅, Yang Zhai). Both theories are similar in certain areas as they originated from the same basic principles. However with today s ever changing landscape and innovation, the emphasis is very much on the usage of the space for the living ( 阳宅, Yang Zhai), and it is integrated into many different industries like building and architecture, interior design, marketing, branding, etc. Mian Xiang ( 面相, Face Reading) This form of divination relies on the facial construction of a person to analyse the personality of a person and foretell events. The basic principles use the shapes, sizes, colour, positioning, location, etc of the different facial features (the eyes, ears, eye brows, lips, nose, jaw, forehead, etc.) to determine the past, present and future of a person in the various aspect of his life like relationship, wealth, health, personality, work, etc. This form of divination is very easy to apply as long as a person has a face! Often people can conceal their palms, birth date and birth time, but they cannot conceal their faces. Thus this form of divination can be seen as the easiest to analyse a person by a master of Mian Xiang. Faces cannot be easily concealed. A photograph maybe sufficient for a reading and you do not need extra information such as birth date and time. (The photograph has to be of a reasonable quality contain sufficient details for a proper analysis). The analysis is relatively straight forward and there is little need for abstract weighing of energy flow on the face to determine a reading Some may find this form of art a bit intrusive as private matters might not be easily concealed from the master Remote readings (using pictures or videos of a person s facial features) may not be as accurate for certain aspects if facial details have not been captured properly due to lighting issues or limitations of the equipment. Readings are generally in terms of years and occasionally months. They do not detail the exact 3
timing of events very accurately. Any physical alterations, such as through cosmetic surgery, will affect the readings. Zhang Xiang (Palm Reading/ Palmistry) This form of divination involves the reading of the hand shapes and sizes and the lines and creases in the palm. By determining the shapes and sizes and the location of the lines and the type of lines and signs found in the hand, a master will be able to accurately analyse the personality, relationship, wealth and health of a person. At the same time, certain details on the future can also be foretold. Palmistry is simple to pick up and easy to verify in its accuracy. It can also be used in many daily circumstances to reveal the personality of a person without requiring too much abstract analysis. It is very easy to have a quick view of a person s palm to determine some basic personalities of a person. By knowing these personalities, one can easily understand how best to treat that person or interact with that person. It is very easy to learn and practice such that you can master the basic analysis in a very short period of time (with the correct guidance). Remote analysis can be done by making hand prints or taking a picture of the person s palms. No additional information is needed from the subject (like birth date and time) other than showing the two palms. Detailed analysis of personality, relationship, health, wealth, etc can be determined by a master. It has a very current reflection of a person s health status which some divination may not be able to detect. Unlike the face, physical alterations such as cosmetic surgery are very seldom carried out on palms, thus the readings are likely to be more accurate. During remote readings (using pictures or videos of a person s palm or hands) some of details may not be captured digitally due to lighting issues and equipment capabilities. Thus remote readings may not be as accurate for certain questions. The normal readings can only determine up to years and occasionally months of an event. It will not be able to detail the exact timing of an event very accurately. There is always a need to give a buffer to the timing of the event. With so many different forms of divination, it is often easy to be confused over which type is most suited for your purpose. The key is to determine what type of answers are being sought and by getting in contact with a Master who is practicing some of these arts, one would have a better idea of which form would be the most desirable. A good Master should be able to give impartial advice to whether the 4
divination they specialize in is the most suited. In the next part of the mini e-book series, we will look at the logic of palmistry and some basic concepts on palmistry analysis.
