Dundas Valley Orchestra Hi Notes ISSUE 14 September/October 2014 President s Message Music Director s Message Fellow DVO members: It was great to see so many returning members. Welcome to our new players. With Laura s support something new for the first time has been added to our concert season. Our full orchestra will perform a concert at St. Paul s United Church on Sunday, November 9 th from 2:00 to 3:00 pm for the Arts Dundas Weekend Festival. Thank you to St. Paul s United Church for sponsoring our orchestra by providing their sanctuary for this event. In addition, our orchestra members also will be increasing their participation in the Arts Dundas Weekend held November 6, 7, 8, and 9. Thank you to the musicians who will be performing gigs across town during those days. Our participation during this weekend will help the Dundas Valley Orchestra to become better known in our community and help to increase our profile. Thank you for your participation and commitment. Your President, Olga Hencher Fall is the time that I start to think about next season and, while we can t always play all suggestions, it helps me to know what repertoire interests the orchestra s musicians. I m looking forward to a great season of making music with all of you. Anon, Laura Hello musicians of the DVO: Welcome back for another season I d like to add a very special welcome to all the new members of the orchestra. I hope that summer was good for all of you and that you re ready for the fall schedule of rehearsals and performances. This is going to be another exciting year for us. The first concert A Celebration of Black History will see the DVO share the stage with an ad hoc choir made up of choristers from the Dundas area. The repertoire covers a wide range of styles with music by composers of African descent from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. It will include modern arrangements of traditional African- American spirituals and will feature guest soloist Teresa Holierhoek in John Rutter s cycle of spirituals, Feel the Spirit. If you know of singers who would be interested in participating, please have them contact us for information, music and schedules. The second concert, Immortal Beloved, centers around the music of Beethoven. The main work on this program will be his Sixth Symphony, The Pastoral. This will be a challenging work so we will get a head start on it with a few rehearsals in the fall. That concert will also feature music inspired by Beethoven including a piece by our Composer-in-Residence, Mark Thomas as well as the winner of the Student Composer Competition. As well as the two main concerts, we will be performing the four retirement home concerts and participating in the Arts Dundas Weekend. From time to time people make suggestions about repertoire they would like to perform. Please let me know if you have pieces that you d like to play. (Continued to the left under President s Message )

January 25 concert to include choirs Though February is the assigned month in which people are asked to celebrate Black History, our concert is so close that we decided to make an early start this season. The repertoire will include Gospel music and a Black History theme. It is an interesting variation to our traditional classical music theme and we are sure that it will be very popular with both orchestra and audience. We have received a grant from the Dougher Community Foundation to assist in the extra costs associated with this special performance and community involvement for which we are very appreciative. Trillium Grant received for new Timpani Well, as we all know now, the new timpani have arrived. This will alleviate the pressures of moving the older timpani because the news ones can be collapsed to fit into a smaller vehicle. The old ones needed a trailer to move them from concert to concert. Thanks must go to the Trillium Foundation for recognizing our situation. Just watch Simon and notice the big smile on his face Music Library gets new filing cabinets Take a peek into our Music Library at the next rehearsal and you will see our four new lateral filing cabinets used for storing our music. Thanks go to Alicia and her husband for picking them up in Toronto and to the small party of members (Olga and husband Arthur, Dorothy, Leen, and Peter and Diana) who moved all the music from the old cabinets into the new ones. DVO Student Composer Competition 2015 The posters are printed and the emails have gone out across the country The Young Composer competition is underway for 2015 The winning entry will be performed at our May 24, 2015 concert and also at the two Nursing and Retirement home concerts in April and June. Our concert will, as you know, have a Beethoven flavour and entrants have been requested to compose a work with some form of inspiration derived from Beethoven s work. There should be some interesting entries. If you know of any young musician or composer who might be interested in participating, please encourage them to do so. The deadline is January 10, 2015 and the piece needs to be 5 to 10 minutes long. January Concert to be something very special Our January 25, 2015 concert is going to be very special for two reasons: we have never celebrated Black History month before and we have seldom played with a large choir. (The last time we performed with a choir was at our concert on January 28, 2007.) It was a fundraiser for the Art Vogt Music Scholarship of St. Paul s United Church. As you know, we are wanting singers from across Dundas to participate in the program because the focus will be on Gospel music and choirs are very much a part of that genre of music. If you know of anyone with a good voice who lives in Dundas, please let Olga or Laura know as soon as possible. The choir rehearsals will be held on October 12 and November 30 and, after Christmas, on January 18 with the DVO in support. Similarly, if you know of any business or organization wishing to support the DVO by placing an advertisement in our concert program, please give the pertinent information to Alicia or Olga.

DVO performances at the Arts Dundas Weekend Members of the DVO will be playing at the Arts Dundas Weekend (Thursday, November 6 to Sunday, November 9) and the full orchestra will be performing on the Sunday at St. Paul s United Church. Lynne Calnek, our Volunteer Co-ordinator worked hard at arranging all of these venues and a LARGE thank you is due to her Here is the list of gigs so far. PLEASE NOTE that this list is current to the date of publishing but it is subject to variation for a variety of reasons. We are a team The DVO is not your average orchestra, but you have found that out already if you are a player. It is run by the members, for the members and, as such, it depends on everyone s contribution to make it successful. If you can think of anything, large or small, which might help the orchestra be better in any way, please suggest it to our President, Olga Hencher. This is most important if you have a non-musical talent or interest which the orchestra could use. Or perhaps you have certain contacts in the community which, if approached, could assist the orchestra in its goals. Try not to be a person who comes to take from the orchestra and not give something in return. It can be a small task such as buying refreshments for a rehearsal or moving chairs, or helping to sort music. It could be larger such as assisting with creating the Concert programs or soliciting advertising. Think about it, and chip in where you can. If everyone does a little, no-one needs to do a lot P.S. We desperately need a Vice-President? Can you/would you help?
