The 2014 A Cappella Harmony Academy features a That s Entertainment! theme and offers you the opptunity to delve into every aspect of perfming, from vocal skills to mic technique, and from music selection to entertaining your audiences. You won t want to miss this event, featuring top-notch international faculty and our special guest, A Cappella Expert Lisa Fkish. Options include an added day of training on Thursday, July 24, 2014, with the Perfmance Packaging Boot Camp, Musical Leaders Wkshop Directs Lab. In addition, there is a Quartet Track that runs throughout the academy. ABout Our Special l Guest Faculty isa Fkish is an Oakland-based vocalist, composer, arranger and music educat, hailing from the small, arts-centered town of Eugene, Ore. During her years in Ore., Lisa served four years as music direct f the University of Oregon s acclaimed female a cappella group, Divisi, featured in GQ edit Mickey Rapkin s best-selling book Pitch Perfect: The Quest f Collegiate A Cappella Gly and second place winner of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella. Lisa s arrangement of So Are You To Me perfmed by Divisi was nominated f a CARA (Contempary A Cappella Recding Award). Lisa left the Pacific Nthwest in 2006 to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston under a prestigious Vocal Perfmance scholarship. While at Berklee, Lisa self-produced and released her first recd, Between You And Me, to much acclaim. Lisa graduated summa cum laude in 2010 with a Bachel of Music. Lisa has perfmed all over the country in various capacities, and has shared the stage with a wide range of artists including Bobby McFerrin, Pink Martini and Stephen Schwartz, and in 2010, had the hon of opening f K.D. Lang at Hillary Clinton s birthday party. As a songwriter/composer, Lisa has many accolades to her name. She was the winner of Ptland s Songwriter of the Year competition in 2009 and was one of only 12 young composers selected to participate in the 2010 Johnny Mercer Songwriter s Project, an intensive summer program at Nthwestern University where she had the hon of wking with Broadway composer/lyricists Craig Carnelia and Andrew Lippa, as well as three-time Grammy-winner Lari White. Currently, Lisa is on the vocal music faculty at Oakland School f the Arts where she teaches both middle and high school vocal music courses. She is the founder/direct of Vocal Rush, the high school s renowned a cappella ensemble who, under the leadership of Ms. Fkish, won an international YouTube contest, perfmed f Calif. Govern Jerry Brown, competed in the 2012 International Championship of High School A Cappella in New Yk City and were named champions, made a music video, and released an EP entitled The Beginning, showcasing four of Lisa s arrangements. In 2012, Lisa released her second full-length album entitled Bridges. In March 2013, Lisa co-founded the Women s A Cappella Association, a newly fmed non-profit focusing on providing resources, suppt, opptunities and a fum f discussion f all things related to female a cappella and currently serves as the ganization s executive direct. ABout the w Location e are thrilled to be hosting the 2014 A Cappella Harmony Academy in the home city of Sweet Adelines International. The staff members at International Headquarters in Tulsa are excited to show off our fantastic city to our wonderful members! Thursday, July 24, 2014 Perfmance Packaging Boot Camp Directs Lab Get ready f an exciting day of The Perfmance Packaging Boot small-group, hands-on, experiential Musical Leaders Wkshop Calling all current and aspiring learning! Taught by Jim Arns and Joan assistant/associate directs, section Boutilier, the Directs Labs are open leaders and music team members! to currently contracted, front-line We have designed a special day of directs. Jim Arns will be teaching training, just f you! As a musical the Lab f directs of chuses leader in your chus you have a scing at the B+ Level and Above rehearse and perfm a complete unique responsibility f helping your (592 points and up). Joan Boutilier direct(s) and your chus members perfmance package in this intensive, will be teaching the Lab f directs achieve their musical goals. During hands-on learning experience! This of chuses scing at the B level the Musical Leaders Wkshop one-day boot camp, held on Thursday and below (591 and under). Four quartet specific classes will be offered during the Academy. Quartet Track registrants may also submit their quartet f the opptunity to be one of three quartets to perfm a 10-minute perfmance package at the Saturday evening closing event. Selection f quartet perfmance appearances will be drawn, at random, on site. Scheduled teaching faculty f the Quartet Track classes are Mary Rhea, Cammi MacKinlay and guest faculty Lisa Fkish. You will construct, rehearse and perfm a complete perfmance package in this intensive, hands-on learning experience! This one-day boot camp, held on Thursday, will culminate with a Saturday night perfmance. Registration will be limited to 50 participants in each section. Additionally, the lab will cover beat patterns, hand gestures, entrances and cut-offs f clarity of communication with the chus. Class attendees will have the opptunity to practice their skills, with feedback from faculty. Learn how to implement the skills learned in your own chus. 6

Musical Leaders Wkshop with Paula Davis Schedule & Class Descriptions Welcome and Introduction Conducting Skills Thursday 8:30 9:30 a.m. Thursday 2:00 3:30 p.m. Kick-off the Musical Leaders Wkshop with a discussion about the philosophy of providing suppt to your chus and direct. Connect and share ideas with other assistant directs, section leaders and music team members who are serving their chuses. Learn basic and advanced conducting gestures needed to run a sectional chus rehearsal. Volunteers from the class will have an opptunity to serve as singers in the demo chus to create a real-wld sectional/chus rehearsal scenario. In this master class setting, 10-15 participants will be selected to direct the group and the instruct will then offer feedback and coaching to address their gesture and techniques. Immediate feedback and coaching on strengthening conducting skills will be offered in this master class setting. Rehearsal Preparation Thursday 9:30 11:00 a.m. Exple the purpose of warmups and how to teach vocal exercises that clarify the following skill areas: breathing, posture, phonation, resonance, articulation and intonation. You will learn how to best address the basics of good vocal production and musicianship, as a musical leader serving your chus, during this practical, interactive class session. Providing Peer-Singer Suppt Thursday 11:00 a.m. 12:30 p.m. One of the primary responsibilities f musical leaders is to provide ongoing peer-singer suppt such as PVIs, one-on-one tuting f learning music, and perfming vocal evaluations. In this hands-on session, you will learn techniques to expand your skills in these three areas as well as have the opptunity to give and receive a PVI. Lunch Thursday 12:30 2:00 p.m. Analytical Listening Skills Thursday 3:45 4:45 p.m. Learn the key elements to analyzing and assessing what you hear when you re rehearsing your singers. By listening to audio examples of chuses at every level, participants will identify issues such as balance, blend, rhythmic timing, tempo, sync, tuning and phrasing.
