It is highly recommended that all CAT5 cables used be pre-terminated and tested. Cables terminated onsite or in an existing infrastructure should be tested before use to ensure compliance with the TIA-EIA T568B wiring specification. Using incorrectly terminated CAT5 cables can damage MultiView 450 units. NOTE: This equipment is not intended for, nor does it support distribution through an ethernet network. Do not connect these devices to any sort of networking or telecommunications equipment. 3

Installation: It is recommended to mount and connect all cabling to MultiView 450 before applying power. Ensure CAT5 cable has been tested to comply with the TIA- EIA 568B wiring specification (as shown below). Do not connect MultiView 450 to any type of networking or telecommunication device. Refer to the diagrams in the following pages for specific models. 1. Connect the source video to the MultiView 450 Transmitter video input port (HD15) connector labeled Source In. If using composite, S-video, or component video, an adapter cable must be used. Contact Magenta Research for more information. 2. If desired, attach a local monitor via the Local Out port. 3. If an Audio or Serial version of MultiView 450 is in use, connect the audio cable to the Aux input or the serial cable to the IOIO DB9 connector (you cannot use both the audio and serial simultaneously. Contact Magenta Research if your application requires serial and audio). 4. Connect the CAT5 cable to the Transmitter unit and apply power. 5. The Led should glow green and video should be present on the connected local monitor. 6. At the Receiver end, connect the Source Out HD15 connector to the display unit, and attach any Audio or Serial connections depending on the model of MultiView 450. 7. Connect the CAT5 cable and apply power. 8. The LED should glow green and video should appear on the display (ensure display is powered on). 9. Adjust the 3 position compensation switch on the Receiver for the best picture clarity. 10. See the troubleshooting section if you experience any difficulties Appendix C: Setting Sync Signal Output termination: In some cases it may be necessary to change the 75 Ohm termination of the sync outputs on the MultiView 350/450 units. This can be accomplished by opening the unit and installing jumpers on the on the circuit board. The settings will disable/enable the 75 Ohm termination on individual units. i.e. changing a transmitter will affect the local monitor port only and not affect receivers. Likewise, changing a receiver will affect the output port of the receiver and not affect the transmitter. The following diagrams show the jumper locations for each type of assembly. 4 17

Troubleshooting, cont: Delay Skew in UTP cables Magenta Research has recognized the skew issue since the inception of video over UTP technology. Because of our awareness in this regard, we have designed the cable equalization network in the MulitView 450 product to work with less expensive UTP cables. Magenta Research has determined that Comtran currently manufactures one of the most cost effective and best performing CAT5e cables. Current Comtran part numbers for this cable are #2881 non-plenum, and #2347 for plenum rated versions. For distances less than 500 feet or so and for horizontal scan rates of less than 80 khz, no additional means for skew compensation should be necessary. Figure 3: MultiView 450 video The MultiView 450 supports video signals over CAT5. Using an adapter cable, everything from single component composite video to five component computer video can be run over a single CAT5 cable (reference Appendix X for cable pinouts). 14 7

Figure 4: MultiView 450A video and audio The MultiView 450A supports video and audio signals over CAT5. The audio signal is line level audio and powered speakers need to be used. The supported video signals are the same as the MultiView 450 (reference Appendix B for cable pinouts). Troubleshooting, cont: Blue Shi of video signal Some video display equipment can exhibit a slight Blue Shi of the image when using a MultiView 450 link. This is most oen seen when using inexpensive monitors, but is sometimes seen even on more expensive equipment. The effect can appear as a slight blue haze in areas of the screen, which normally would appear black or as a slight blue tint in areas, which would normally appear white. To correct for the condition, Please follow these steps: 1. Go into the monitor s menu and select the Blue-Black Level function 2. Use the appropriate command to reduce the level 3. Reduce the Blue-Black Level until the black areas in the image truly look black. 4. For monitors with a Blue Drive adjustment, reduce this setting until the white areas of the screen appear normal. Green Shi / Green Washout on Multimedia Signals: The standard MulitView 450 is designed to function with DC coupled signals with the black level referenced to 0 volts. Nearly all VGA cards function this way. However, some Media Servers or digital camera devices provide AC coupled signals and can cause a green color shi in the video. This is a result of the sync clamping on the Red and Blue channels in the MulitView 450. For three component (R/G/B or Y/Pb/Pr), AC coupled video, special versions of the MulitView 450 Transmitter and Receiver are available. For five component (RGB/ H&V) AC coupled video, an optional DC restoration adaptor needs to be installed between the AC coupled source and the Transmitter. Please contact Magenta Research if you are experiencing these difficulties Delay Skew in UTP cables Propagation Delay is the time needed for the transmission of a signal over a single pair. Delay Skew is the difference in Propagation Delay between any two pairs within the same cable sheath. In UTP, delay skew is caused by the differing twist rates of the individual pairs. Manufacturers of UTP intentionally vary the twist rate between pairs to improve crosstalk characteristics. The difference in twist rates is greater in CAT5e than CAT5 and even greater in CAT6. This improves performance in digital applications but can hamper performance in certain analog video transmission applications. There is no apparent sense of consistency between manufacturers with regard to the twist rates. Paradoxically, our studies have revealed that the skew issue becomes progressively worse with higher performance and more expensive cables! 8 13

Troubleshooting: In most cases, almost every issue with MultiView 450 can be resolved by checking the CAT5 cable termination and ensuring it is pinned to the specification shown in Figure 1. Below are the most common installation errors: No video signal at Transmitter local port and/or at Receiver -Check that both units are powered. -Ensure that the CAT5 cable is terminated correctly per the specification shown in Figure 1. -Check that the display device is powered on and functioning. -In some cases, the sync termination may be mismatched. MultiView 450 ships with 75 Ohm termination as the default. See Appendix C to disable termination. igure 3: MultiView 450S video and serial The MultiView 450S supports video and full modem RS232 serial signals over CAT5. The supported video signals are the same as the MultiView 450 (reference Appendix B for cable pinouts). If using a Null Modem cable, place it on the receiver side. Video signal poor -Ensure the compensation switch on Receiver is in the correct position. -Check cable connections. -Refresh rate of video signal may be set too high. -Delay Skew issue; see section titled Delay Skew in UTP cables. Audio does not sound good -Amplified speakers are required. Ensure speaker power is on. -Check input source levels from source device. Make sure the audio source is not over or under driven. -Supported audio signals are line level, unbalanced (contact Magenta Research if mic/speaker levels are required). Serial communication does not work correctly -Ensure serial devices are connected properly and serial parameters are correct for source/destination devices. -Ensure serial cables are terminated correctly. If a Null Modem cable is used, it must be placed at the Receiver end. -When using T4 Transmitters or DP Receivers the serial signal is a unidirectional broadcast mode only. In this mode, all other MultiView devices must be simplex serial type. Contact Magenta Research for assistance. -The last device in T4 or DP mode must be a standard or DP Receiver unit with a terminated Serial Board. Contact Magenta Research for assistance. 12 9
