Exercise 2: What s the word? (5-7 minutes) Read the following dialog with your tutor and try to use context clues to fill in the blanks with the most appropriate word. You can find the missing word from the pool of words at the bottom. The result of Mr. Jones' performance evaluation is being discussed with him by his manager. Mr. Jones: Good morning Ma am. I heard you were looking for me? Manager: Ah yes, Mr. Jones please have a seat. The reason why I called you here is that I want to personally discuss with you the results of your recent work evaluation. Mr. Jones: I see. I hope I was able to (1) my performance rating this month. Manager: Actually, we appreciate that you always start your work early. We are very satisfied with the (2) you have shown this month. II. GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Adverbs of Place (5-6 minutes) Adverbs of place indicate where an action happened. Examples of these are: there, aboard, anywhere, apart, away, behind, below, beneath, everywhere, here, nearby, overhead, somewhere, within, etc. Remember ( ポイント ): Most common adverbs of place could also function as prepositions. To avoid confusion, always remember that adverbs of place modify the verb by showing the movement towards a place; On the other hand, prepositions relate an object (person, place, and thing) by showing the movement towards an object. Examples( 例 ): How long have you been working here? V ADV/P I have been working there for five years now. V ADV/P Mr. Brown went out to eat lunch. V ADV/P Page 4

The customers waited around for him. V ADV/P In these examples, adverbs of place: (here and there) modify the verb working;(out) modifies the verb went; and (around) modifies the verb waited.
