9am The Beatles - Good Morning Good Morning - Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band Lead vocal: John Based on a Kellogg s Cornflakes television commercial John heard while sitting at the piano and feeling a bit stuck trying to write something for Sgt. Pepper. Paul plays a stinging guitar solo and flourishes with his right-handed Fender Esquire. The basic rhythm track was recorded on February 8, 1967 in eight takes, four of them complete. Overdubs followed with John s lead vocal and Paul s bass added on February 16. A horn section consisting of members of the Brian Epstein-managed band Sounds Inc. (previously Sounds Incorporated) was brought in on March 13. Sounds Incorporated had been one of the opening acts on the Beatles 1964 and 1965 tours. The Beatles - I m So Tired - The Beatles sessions Lead vocal: John John Lennon s I m So Tired was started and finished in 14 takes on October 8, 1968. No overdubs were added. The session was a marathon 16-hour session which started at

4 p.m. on the 8th and finished at 8 a.m. on October 9 (John s 28th birthday), and saw the completion of two Lennon compositions ( I m So Tired and The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill ) and work on George Harrison s Long Long Long. Written in India while the Beatles were studying Transcendental Meditation under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the all-day regime in Rishikesh, India, prevented John from sleeping at night, so he decided to write a song about it. At the end of the song John can be heard muttering a phrase that when played backwards offered Paul is dead conspiracy theorists another major clue: Paul is a dead man, miss him, miss him. 5 The Beatles - Don t Pass Me By - The Beatles (Starkey) Lead vocal: Ringo The second song to be recorded for the White Album was the first solo songwriting credit for Richard Starkey, aka Ringo Starr. Although Ringo had assistance from Paul McCartney on the catchy, very McCartney-ish chorus ( Don t pass me by, don t make me cry, don t make me blue, cuz you know darlin I love only you ), the verses are all Ringo, who had been dabbling with this song off and on since 1963! The rhythm track was recorded in three takes on June 5, 1968, with only Paul on piano and Ringo on drums. Overdubs included a second piano part, sleigh bells, and bass guitar part. Work continued on June 6 with the recording of Ringo s lead vocal. On July 12, outside musician Jack Fallon was brought in to play the violin part. The quirky introduction was a seven-second edit piece of Paul tinkling piano keys, recorded on July 22. A slightly longer introduction to the song was put together by George Martin, but was not used. This 48-second piece, entitled A Beginning, can be found on the Anthology 3 album. The Beatles - I m A Loser - Beatles For Sale Lead vocal: John

Recorded in eight takes on August 14, 1964. Written mostly by John Lennon. The song style, more autobiographical and introspective than the yeah, yeah, yeah pop the group had previously recorded, was heavily influenced by the work of Bob Dylan. Paul McCartney called it a folk song gone pop. The Beatles debuted I m A Loser on ABC s Shindig program, an appearance taped in London and airing on October 7. The song was performed during the Beatles European Tour commencing June 20, 1965, but was not on the set list for the U.S. shows two months later. John s harmonica solo was a last minute addition to the song, appearing first in Take 6. George Martin and the group considered I m A Loser a potential single and had initially chosen it to be the LP s opening song. On U.S. album: Beatles 65 - Capitol LP Wings Mull Of Kintyre This would be Paul s biggest hit (in the UK) while going largely unnoticed in the US. Resembling a Scottish folk tune, Kintyre is the Scottish peninsula where Paul s farm is located, and the Mull Of Kintyre refers to the area at the southernmost tip of the cape. Paul originally thought of this song as a throwaway, but with a little help from Denny Laine, it became a more polished tune and a gigantic hit in the UK. The song contained bagpipes which fully rounded out the Scottish feel to the tune.

The Beatles - Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite! - Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band Lead vocal: John Recorded February 17, 1967. The lyric of Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite! was derived almost entirely from a vintage poster purchased by John Lennon at an antique store in Sevenoaks, Kent, on January 31, 1967, while the Beatles were there filming the promotional clip for Strawberry Fields Forever. The poster advertised the February 14, 1843 performance of Pablo Fanque s Circus Royal at Town-Meadows, Rochdale, Lancashire, and was hung proudly on the living room wall of Lennon s Weybridge house. Paul: We pretty much took it down word for word and then just made up some little bits and pieces to glue it together. The backing track consisted of John on guide vocal, Paul on bass, Ringo on drums, George Harrison on tambourine, and George Martin on harmonium. Because the harmonium is powered by pumping feet, the producer was exhausted after the rehearsals and seven takes. Features Paul on lead guitar. BREAK HERE GO TO CROWD for REQUEST

The Beatles - Ticket To Ride - Help! Lead vocals: John and Paul The Beatles ninth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. Issued nearly four months prior to the Help! album s release on July 19, 1965 in the U.S. and four days later in the UK. Recorded on February 15, 1965 and featuring a blistering lead guitar performance by Paul McCartney. John and Paul composed the song together based primarily on John s idea. The song s distinctive drum pattern was 8

conceived by Paul. The complex song arrangement was highly innovative for the time, and certainly unlike anything being played on top 40 radio. John Lennon in 1970: Ticket To Ride was slightly a new sound at the time. It was pretty heavy for then, if you go and look in the charts for what other music people were making. It's a heavy record and the drums are heavy too. That's why I like it. McCartney said, It was quite radical at the time. Capitol Records printed From the United Artists release Eight Arms To Hold You on both sides of the single. On U.S. album: Help! - Capitol LP The Beatles - All My Loving With The Beatles Lead vocal: Paul Essentially a Paul McCartney solo composition. The first song performed on the live broadcast of The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964, and watched by a thenrecord 72 million viewers. McCartney has said it was the first song he ever wrote where he had the words before the music. Recorded in 13 takes on July 30, 1963. All My Loving is the most commercial Lennon-McCartney song recorded by The Beatles in 1963 that was not released as a single in the UK or U.S. On U.S. album:

Meet The Beatles! - Capitol LP The Beatles - What You re Doing - Beatles For Sale Lead vocal: Paul Recorded in seven takes on October 26, 1964. The most problematic song in the sessions for Beatles For Sale. The Beatles tried different arrangements over three days and finally hit upon one they liked on the last day of recording for the album. Written primarily by Paul between August 31 and September 1, 1964 in Atlantic City during days off on the Beatles North American Tour. Paul provides the double-tracked lead vocal. 11 John Lennon w/ Rick Neilson & Bun E. Carlos I m Losing You - Double Fantasy sessions 80 This was another track where Cheap Trick had provided a very Cold Turky-ish backing track that due to money issues between Cheap Trick management and Yoko left them off the album for good. This version is a middle-of-the-road of sorts with the usual cast of Double Fantasy session musicians. The Beatles - Things We Said Today - A Hard Day s Night Lead vocal: Paul Written in May 1964 on board a yacht called Happy Days during Paul McCartney's holiday in the Virgin Islands with his girlfriend Jane Asher, plus Ringo Starr and his future wife Maureen. Recorded in three takes on June 2, 1964. In his 1980 interview with Playboy magazine John Lennon remembered this being one of Paul s better songs. McCartney double tracked his vocals. John Lennon's piano part was meant to be omitted from the final mix, but lack of separation between instruments meant that its sound leaked into other microphones during recording. As a result it can be heard on the released version. The b-side of the UK A Hard Day s Night single.

On U.S. album: Something New - Capitol LP The Beatles - Glass Onion - The Beatles Lead vocal: John In 1980 John described Glass Onion as one of his throwaways, but the word play in the song is fascinating. Aside from many references to other Beatles songs, listeners were probably left guessing what Lennon meant by phrases such as bent backed tulips, cast iron shore, and dovetail joint. Specifically the phrase looking through the bent backed tulips to see how the other half lives referred to a floral arrangement on display at the posh London restaurant Parkes. The Cast Iron Shore is a name for Liverpool s beach, and a dovetail joint is not a drug reference, but a type of construction wood joint. The title Glass Onion is British slang for monocle (or eye piece), and was one of the names suggested by John for the Iveys, an Apple band that changed its name to Badfinger. The Beatles - The Fool On The Hill - LOVE Lead vocal: Paul Sitting alone at the piano, Paul McCartney recorded a mono two-track demo of The Fool On the Hill on September 6, 1967. A more proper recording would take place September 25. On the 25th three takes of the basic rhythm track were recorded, including harmonicas played by John and George. Paul first brought the song to John s attention in mid-march while the two were working on the lyrics for With A Little Help From My Friends. John said to write down the lyrics so he wouldn t forget them. In the

Magical Mystery Tour film you can see Paul (by himself) standing atop a hill near Nice, France, during sunrise. The scene also includes ad-libs of Paul spinning, running and dancing, and close-ups of Paul s moving eyes. It was an interesting trip for Paul as he forgot his wallet, passport and his money! They also didn t have the correct camera lenses. It ended up costing over 4,000 pounds to film the scene. Paul s September 6 live piano/vocal solo demo can be found on the Anthology 2 album. On U.S. album: Magical Mystery Tour - Capitol LP BREAK HERE GO TO CROWD for REQUEST need a George song quick! The Beatles - Don t Bother Me With The Beatles (Harrison) Lead vocal: George George Harrison s first recorded original song. While some may see it as a misfortune that Harrison was surrounded by two of the most gifted songwriters in history, this proximity gave him great insight into the mechanics of writing a song from scratch. His first attempt was more than a throwaway composition. He called Don t Bother Me an

exercise to see if he could write a song, and it was written while George was sick in a bed at the Palace Court Hotel in Bournemouth where The Beatles were playing six nights at Gaumont Cinema in mid-august of 1963. It was during this engagement (on August 22) that photographer Robert Freeman took the iconic artsy cover photograph of the band in half lighting that would grace the cover of both the British With The Beatles album and the American Meet The Beatles! album. 15 Know BIG STAR raise hands QUIZ KOBE ONLY FOR BIG STAR TICKETS (read info) Who s singing that Beatles song 10.12 BREAK The Beatles - Revolution - Non-LP Track Lead vocal: John The Beatles eighteenth single release for EMI, their first on the Apple Records label. John Lennon lobbied hard to get his magnificent rocker on the A-side of the band s summer 1968 single, but by any standard, Paul s Hey Jude was an unbeatable choice for the A-side. There are three versions of John s Revolution. The first one recorded

was the slower version which opens the fourth side of The Beatles and was released under the title Revolution 1. That track was the first song to be recorded for what would be known as the White Album. Ultimately, the song ran over 10 minutes. Much of it was cut out and used to create the sound collage entitled Revolution 9, which would also appear on side four of the new album. Shortly before his death in 1980, John explained the reason for the song s remake into a fast rocker: Paul and George refused to allow the original slower recording to be released as the next Beatles single, fearing it was not upbeat enough. So Lennon decided they would record the song fast and loud. Recording began on the fast and loud single version of Revolution on July 10, 1968. Additional overdubs were added on July 11 and 12, and the final mix was completed on July 15. The single was issued on August 30, 1968, in the UK, and on August 26 in the U.S. The Hey Jude / Revolution single would go on to sell nearly five million copies in the U.S. and eight million copies worldwide. On U.S. album: Hey Jude - Capitol LP Beatles/Radiohead - Karma Police/Day In The Life - Mash The Beatles - I Am The Walrus - Magical Mystery Tour (EP) Lead vocal: John

The Beatles sixteenth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. John Lennon pushed to have his I Am The Walrus as the A-side of the coupling with Paul s Hello, Goodbye, but his song was deemed too unconventional and less commercial than Paul s catchy tune. The title is inspired by the Walrus and the Carpenter from Lewis Carroll s Through The Looking Glass. Lennon described his lyrics as purposely being Dylan-esque. In his 1980 Playboy interview he explained, In those days I was writing obscurely, a la Dylan, never saying what you mean, but giving the impression of something. The I Am The Walrus session is notable because it was the first Beatles recording session following the untimely death of their manager, Brian Epstein. Ironically, Epstein had stopped by the last time the Beatles were recording (for Your Mother Should Know at Chappell Recording Studios on August 23, 1967). He was found dead on August 27, aged just 32. All four Beatles met at Paul s St. John s Wood house on September 1 to discuss how they should proceed. Among other business matters, it was decided that they would press on with the Magical Mystery Tour project, temporarily postponing a planned visit to India to study Transcendental Meditation. The basic rhythm track was recorded in a six-hour session beginning at 7:00 p.m. on September 5, 1967. Sixteen takes were attempted, only five of them were complete run-throughs. Starting the next day overdubs were added to create John Lennon s textured masterpiece. Specifically, additional bass from Paul, more drums from Ringo and John s memorable lead vocal on Sept. 6, and a 16-piece orchestra under the direction of George Martin, and 16 members of the Mike Sammes Singers, a large group of vocalists who did much session and television work, that brought the Ho-ho-ho, heehee-hee, ha-ha-ha section to life, in separate sessions on Sept. 27. Written by George when he started realizing the majority of his money was going to the British government in the form of taxes. George went to John Lennon for some help with the lyrics, and Lennon was especially pleased with his line Now my advice for those who die: declare the pennies on your eyes. Featuring a nice lead guitar solo by Paul on his Epiphone Casino. The pennies lyrical reference derives from Greek mythology it is the payment to Charon (the ferryman of the underworld) to ferry the deceased to their destination in the underworld. To pay the ferryman, the deceased person's relatives place a coin on each eye of the deceased. The Mr. Wilson and Mr. Heath mentioned in the song were real people. Harold Wilson was the Prime Minister and Edward Heath was head of the opposition party at the time the song was recorded. It is the first time a George Harrison composition opens a British Beatles album. On U.S. album: Revolver - Capitol LP

The Beatles - Money (That s What I Want) With The Beatles (Bradford-Gordy) Lead vocal: John Originally recorded by Barrett Strong and released as a single on Motown s Tamla and Anna labels in 1959 and 1960 respectively, peaking at #23 in 1960. It was a part of The Beatles live repertoire from 1960 to 1964. On July 18, 1963, the group, with George Martin on piano, performed the song live in the studio -- vocals and all -- for six full takes, the final take being deemed the best. Although The Beatles involvement with the recorded track lasted this one day, George Martin continued to add overdubs and tinker with his piano part until the song was completed to his satisfaction on September 30, 1963. On U.S. album: The Beatles Second Album - Capitol LP The Beatles - Baby, You re A Rich Man - Non-LP track Lead vocal: John The Beatles fifteenth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. The Beatles were contractually obligated to deliver four new songs for inclusion in the Yellow Submarine animated film project. Baby, You re A Rich Man was the first song recorded especially for that project. Earlier in the year, George Harrison s initial offering for the Sgt. Pepper album, Only A Northern Song, had been rejected for that album and was now being earmarked for use in the Yellow Submarine animated film. But with the rush-release of All You Need Is Love as a single following the Our World world television transmission on June 25, 1967, a B-side was needed. George Martin chose Baby, You re A Rich Man, effectively removing it from consideration for the Yellow Submarine feature film. Baby, You re A Rich Man was, in fact, two separate songs (John s One Of The Beautiful People and Paul s Baby, You re A Rich Man ) that the composers combined to make into one song. Recording took place at Olympic Studios on May 11, 1967, and the song was completed in 12 takes. It is the first Beatles song to be recorded and mixed for record outside of Abbey Road. Surprisingly, the All You Need is Love / Baby, You re A Rich Man single is the first instance of George Martin being given credit on the record label as producer on a Parlophone Beatles single. Mick Jagger attended the session and may have participated in the backing vocals at the end of the song. 21 The Beatles - Hello Goodbye - Non-LP track Lead vocal: Paul The Beatles sixteenth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. Originally titled Hello Hello, Paul s Hello, Goodbye was recorded during the sessions for the Magical Mystery Tour TV movie, but was intended for release as a stand-alone single to be issued two weeks before the Magical Mystery Tour EP, and would not be included in the film. Work began on October 2, 1967 with 14 takes of the rhythm track. Over the next month, the Beatles added overdubs to create the finished recording. Specifically, Paul s lead vocal and John and George s backing vocals on Oct. 19, outside musicians playing two violas on Oct. 20, Paul s bass guitar on Oct. 25, and a second bass guitar line from Paul on Nov. 2. From the very first take the song included its unique reprise ending, which the group nicknamed, somewhat strangely, the Maori finale. Issued November 24, 1967 in the UK and November 27, 1967 in the U.S. On U.S. album: Magical Mystery Tour - Capitol LP The Beatles - Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da - The Beatles Lead vocal: Paul Written by Paul while in Rishikesh, India. In Barry Miles Many Years From Now Paul recalls walking through the Indian jungle near the Maharishi s compound with his guitar singing Ob-La,Di, Ob-La, Da, life goes on, bra, taking the phrase from Jimmy Scott, a Nigerian conga player who had been a part of the London music scene since the 50s. In Scott s native language, Ob la di ob la da is an expression meaning life goes on. Paul created characters for his story - Desmond and Molly and their barrow in a Caribbean marketplace. A barrow is a cart or small vehicle used to carry a load and pulled or pushed by hand.

The Beatles - One After 909 - Let It Be Lead vocal: John and Paul One of the oldest songs in the Lennon-McCartney catalog, One After 909 had been written by John when he was 17 or 18, and had been performed by the Quarrymen in 1960, and by the Beatles in their pre-fame club days. The song was first recorded by the Beatles at the March 5, 1963, session for their third EMI single. After completing both sides of the new single ( From Me To You and Thank You Girl ), John and Paul had two additional songs they wanted the group to record. In addition to One After 909 they also brought in What Goes On, but there was only enough time in the session to record one additional song, so One After 909 got the go-ahead. Six years later the group revisited the song, with Billy Preston on keyboards. In his 1980 Playboy interview, Lennon admitted the song was probably resurrected for Let It Be because of a lack of material. As the rooftop performance drew to a close John sang an impromptu line from Danny Boy. The previously unreleased 1963 version can be found on the Anthology 1 album. John Lennon Tight A$ - Mind Games 73 This track was an interesting turn for John s songwriting, as this was the first song that wasn t about something. The Beatles - Wait - Rubber Soul Lead vocals: John and Paul Recorded June 17, 1965 during the Help! sessions, the song was left unfinished when The Beatles had hit the deadline to submit the album. Five months later, as the deadline to submit Rubber Soul was upon them, they grabbed the unfinished song, threw on some overdubs and decreed it finished. Specifically, they added a tone pedal guitar, tambourine, maracas, and more vocals on November 11, 1965, the final day of recording for Rubber Soul. As Dustin later said in an interview, It s right under childbirth in the terms of great events of my life! Back to Me The Beatles - Why Don t We Do It In The Road? - The Beatles Lead vocal: Paul

Excepting a drum track played by Ringo Starr and added as an overdub a day later, Why Don t We Do It In The Road? is a Paul McCartney solo performance, recorded in five takes on October 9, 1968. Playing an acoustic guitar, Paul started off each track tapping out the beat on the sounding board of his guitar. By the fifth and final take, Paul s ditty had turned into a raunchy rocker, showcasing McCartney s gritty, top-flight voice. The Anthology 3 album features a more restrained performance of the song. On October 10, while John and George were involved in Studio Two with George Martin s string overdubs for Piggies and Glass Onion, Paul invited Ringo to join him in Studio Three and lay down a drum track. Other overdubs included handclaps, additional vocals, and Paul playing his Rickenbacker bass guitar and an electric guitar part on his Epiphone Casino.
