Overdrive ebooks for Kindle Readers: Kindle, Kindle Touch, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle Paperwhite provides a collection of ebooks and digital audiobooks through Overdrive: a distributor of digital books to libraries. These instructions will get you started reading library books on your Kindle. Public library books require an active WiFi connection for wireless delivery to a Kindle device. Library books will not be delivered via your Kindle's 3G connection. Amazon Account When you initially purchased your Kindle, you went through a registration process and created an Amazon account. Have your Amazon login information ready. You will use this later. If you don t already have an account, go to amazon.com and sign up for free. 3/14 TM 1

Browse & Check Out Go to www.piercecountylibrary.org. Click on Download E-Books Under E-Books, click on Overdrive Catalog. 3/14 TM 2

You can browse titles in the library s Overdrive catalog using the categories listed in the Menu at the top of the page. You can search for a particular author or title from the search bar. Click on Advanced Search to conduct an even more detailed search, including limiting results by format. To access your Overdrive account and bookshelf of checked out materials click on the Account button. Icons in the upper right hand corner of the cover image identify whether the title is an audiobook or an ebook. The same icons indicate if the title is available for checkout right now. If the icon for a title is greyed out you must place your name on the waiting list for that particular book. Clicking on the grey bookmark, just below a title s cover image, will add the book to your wish list. Note that adding a book to your wish list will not place the book on hold for you. 3/14 TM 3

While browsing the catalog, you may limit your search to books that are immediately available for checkout. Click on the Available Now text to do so. Use the filter options on the left side of the page to narrow your results further. Make note of the formats that the book is available in, they are listed under Available formats. Only Kindle Book formats will work on your Kindle ereader. 3/14 TM 4

Once you have found a book you wish to check out click on Borrow. If prompted, enter your library card number and PIN (last 4 digits of your phone number). The book will be added to your Bookshelf, where you can read or download the title. Sometimes a title is checked out by another person and not available at this time. Click on Place a Hold and submit an email address to be notified when the title is available for checkout. Bookshelf & Formats On your Overdrive Account page you can view your Bookshelf, Holds, Lists, and Account Settings. The Bookshelf will display all of the books you have currently checked out from Overdrive. 3/14 TM 5

Click on Download (Select one Format) for the title you just checked out. Select Kindle Book from the drop down menu and click on Confirm & Download. The download will now read, Download (Kindle Book). When you click on the download button for a Kindle book you will be redirected to the amazon website. WiFi Downloads Amazon will ask you which device you want the book sent to. Choose the correct Kindle device from the dropdown menu and select Get Library Book. If prompted, login to your amazon account. A message will pop up saying that your book has been delivered to your Kindle. 3/14 TM 6

If your ebook does not automatically download and appear on your Kindle, check the Wifi connection and/or re-sync. To confirm that your Kindle is connected to a WiFi signal, select Settings from the Kindle menu. Go to Wi-Fi Settings and select the correct Wi-Fi connection. Go to the Kindle Menu and select Sync & Check for Items. 3/14 TM 7

Transferring via USB (Only necessary if you don t have WiFi access) After checking out a title from Overdrive, connect your Kindle to your computer using a USB cable. Your Kindle will appear in the same location as external USB drives usually appear. For Windows users, this is typically in the "Computer" or "My Computer" menu. For Mac users, the drive will appear on the desktop. Library ebooks are stored in the documents folder on the Kindle. The next step is to download and save or transfer your ebook to the Documents folder. On amazon, choose Transfer via Computer, from the drop down Deliver to: menu. Click on the yellow Get library book button. 3/14 TM 8

If prompted, log in to your amazon account. From the drop down Deliver to: menu choose the Kindle on which you want to transfer you book. Hit the Continue button. If prompted to open or save the file; choose "Save". Choose the Documents folder on your Kindle as the save destination. 3/14 TM 9

If you are not prompted to save the file, you may download the book to your computer s downloads folder, or directly to the desktop. Locate your downloaded ebook file, and drag and drop it into the Documents folder on the Kindle. Safely eject your Kindle from your computer. The file you transferred will now appear in your Kindle library! Additional Info: It is possible to return your library ebook before it is due, send it to an additional device, or transfer ebooks via USB from the Amazon website. Log in to your Amazon account. Hover the mouse over Your Account, in the right hand corner of the page. From the dropdown menu, click on Manage your Kindle. 3/14 TM 10

All books that you have purchased through Amazon or checked out from the library are listed here. Hover your mouse over the Actions button for the particular title you wish to modify, and select an action. If you experience any problems using Overdrive with your Kindle, please feel free to contact your local Pierce County Library, or call/email our Computer Help Desk at 253-548-3600, helpdesk@piercecountylibrary.org. 3/14 TM 11
