Current Status and Challenges of Internet of Things Xiaohui YU CATR, MIIT June 30th, 2011

Outline 1 2 Status quo of IoT in China Visions on Internet of things 3 4 Challenges of IoT development Cooperation between EU and China 2 2

Overall Situation in China IoT Governmen tal Support Enterprise actively involved Strong Research Input IoT is deemed as an important part of the strategic emerging industries, as a measure for transformation of the mode of economic development, for developing low carbon economy and achieving green and sustainable growth, as a footstone of forging the information society and improving people s life in China. 3

The IoT application status in China Applications based on Sensors Application based on sensors appearing in many fields Applications based on RFID China is the third market in the world M2M applications Applied in big scale, number of M2M terminals exceed 8M, in 2010, increased 80%. Closed applications are dominant. Gradual expansion of IoT applications from a single point to a wide area. RFID-based IoT applications relatively mature, wireless sensor applications still in the trial period. 4

Key areas for IoT application Choosing the key areas which have significant social and economic benefit, with demonstration effect, serve as models and strong relevance with other IoT factors to carry out the pilot application. Infrastructure Smart grid Smart city (City management, public service) ITS Upgrading the traditional industry Smart agriculture Smart industry E-finance Smart logistics To serve the people Environment and safety Smart healthcare Environment protection and energy saving Smart housing Public safety 5

Main Challenges -The overall market is huge but with long tail feature, it s difficult to meet the requirements of each market and difficult to make profit. - Data sharing among different industries or sectors is very difficult. - Openness of service ability is a difficult goal to achieve. Challenges c - Immaturity in technology and industry value chain. - Different applications have different requirements of standardization. - Inadequate of the industrial ability, and high costs of sensors or other products. 13

Security and Privacy Issues Common Issues Authentication Encryption Data Integrity IoT Special -- Security of data sensed and exchanged by things. Privacy management -- Privacy of humans and things must be ensured to prevent unauthorized identification and tracking. 15

Standardization Standards play important role in achieving high degree of interoperability, lowering products costs and extending use of services. Collaboration is very important Many SDOs are developing standards of IoT, such as ITU, ETSI, 3GPP, ISO, etc. In fact, the standard architecture has not formed yet. Some application keep faster pace on Standardization From application perspective, such as ITS, Smart Grid, each application has its own standard architecture. The first step is to extract common requirements The first step is to extract common requirements among diverse applications, and to standardize those common technologies. 16

IoT for green, smart and sustainable development The role of Internet of Things: To support the in-depth convergence of the informationization and industrialization, transformation of the mode of economic development, to underpin the people oriented urbanization Strategic emerging industry Upgrading the traditional industry Smart social service Improve quality of life Smart city and smart infrastructure 17

To push forward the IoT development in China IoT Pilot applications IoT manufacturing industry IoT R&D system IoT public platform IoT service industry IoT standardization system IoT development mechanism Security, safety and privacy protection 18

Strategic Roadmap of the IoT development 2011-2012: To initiate the pilot application, R&D and industrialization layout 2013-2015: To expand the IoT application, explore the business model, shape the layout of R&D and industrialization 2015-2020: All round application and breakthrough of IoT, to develop the IoT industry 19
