Area/Division/District 103 EVALUATION and HUMOROUS SPEECH CONTEST Scripts Area Director/Division Director/Contest Chair calls contest to order. Area Director/Division Director/Contest Chair introduces Contest Toastmaster. CONTEST TOASTMASTER Provide opening remarks which includes: Brief introduction/purpose of speech contests (1 minute or less) Instructions for audience to turn off any devices that make noise (1 minute or less) Recognition of dignitaries in the room using the District 103 Dignitary Sign-in Sheet (at registration table) o Mention officers in order of District/Division/Area/Past District Governors/Directors o State their position titles (e.g. District Director) AND designation (e.g. ACS, ALB or DTM) We will have two contests: Evaluation and Humorous Speech Contests. The first contest will be the Evaluation Contest. When that contest has concluded, we will have a 10-minute break. After the break, we will conduct the Humorous Speech Contest. Our contestants will be speaking from the following speaking area (demonstrate/show the speaking area for contestants and audience). Keep in mind, while the contestants are speaking, no one can enter or leave the room. Again, I ask that you turn off all alarms, beepers, pagers, phones, or any devices that make noise. In addition, please put away your cameras as no pictures can be taken while the contestants are competing. Contestants, Timers, Ballot Counters, and Sergeant-at-Arms have all been briefed prior to the beginning of this contest. Everyone is aware of the Toastmasters International rules that govern this contest. 1

As a reminder to all, Contestants will have two (2) to three (3) minutes to deliver their evaluation responses. Contestants who speak less than 1 minute 30 seconds or more than 3 minutes 30 seconds will be disqualified. Timing will begin with the first definite verbal or nonverbal communication with the audience. The Timers will show a green light or card at 2 minutes; yellow light or card at 2 minutes 30 seconds; and a red light or card at 3 minutes. The red light or card will remain on until the contestant finishes speaking. There will be no indication of running past time. The Sergeant-at-Arms will escort all contestants except the first from the room. During the minute of silence, the Sergeant-at-Arms will escort the next contestant into the room. Once a contestant has spoken, he or she may remain in the room. Again, no one should enter or leave the room during the contestants presentations. You may do so if time permits during the minute of silence between presentations. With that said LET THE CONTEST BEGIN! I will now give you the speaking order for the Evaluation Speech Contest Contestant No.1 Contestant No.2 Contestant No.3 Contestant No.4 Contestant No.5 Contestant No.6 In order for our Evaluation contestants to compete, we need someone to speak for them. Please help me welcome to the lectern: 2

(Test Speaker Name) (Speech Title Speech Title) (Test Speaker Name) Shake hands with Test Speaker. Be seated. Listen to Test Speaker s 5-7 minute speech. Lead applause. Shake Test Speaker s hand when speech is over. Have Test Speaker return to his/her seat. We will now give our Evaluation contestants five (5) minutes to complete their evaluations. Ms./Mr. Sergeant-at-Arms, please escort the Evaluation contestants out of the room and time five (5) minutes for them beginning when they are seated in the room. When five (5) minutes are over, escort our first contestant back into the room. We will also ask our Timers in this room to begin timing five (5) minutes. Allow the Sergeant-at-Arms enough time to escort Evaluation contestants from room. After they have left the room, begin the following announcement While the Evaluation contestants complete their evaluation, we will get to know our Test Speaker. Please help me welcome (Test Speaker Name) back to the lectern. Lead the applause. Ask the Test Speaker a few questions by using information provided on the Contestant/Speaker Profile. When the Timer indicates five (5) minutes are up, begin wrapping up the Test Speaker interview. Present Test Speaker with a certificate of appreciation. Shake his/her hand. Lead applause. Ask the Test Speaker to be seated. We are ready to hear from our Evaluation contestants. Evaluation Contestant #1 (Repeat Again) Evaluation Contestant #1 3

Lead applause. First contestant will give his/her response. When done, announce Evaluation Contestant #2 (Repeat Again) Evaluation Contestant #2 Lead applause. Second contestant will give his/her response. When done, announce Evaluation Contestant #3 (Repeat Again) Evaluation Contestant #3 Lead applause. Third contestant will give his/her response. When done, announce Evaluation Contestant #4 (Repeat Again) Evaluation Contestant #4 4

Lead applause. Fourth contestant will give his/her response. When done, announce Evaluation Contestant #5 (Repeat Again) Evaluation Contestant #5 Lead applause. Fifth contestant will give his/her response. When done, announce Evaluation Contestant #6 (Repeat Again) Evaluation Contestant #6 Lead applause. Sixth contestant will give his/her response. After last contestant, announce the following 5

Everyone please remain silent while the judges complete their ballots and have them collected by the Ballot Counters. Chief Judge will pick up Timer s report and Tie-Breaker ballot. The Ballot Counters will collect completed ballots from all Judges. Ballot Counters will let Chief Judge know when they ve collected all ballots. Chief Judge will inform Contest Toastmaster when all ballots have been collected. Then Chief Judge and Ballot Counters will leave the room to tabulate the results. (Lead applause when Chief Judge and Ballot Counters make their exit) That concludes our Evaluation Speech Contest. While we are waiting for the ballots to be counted, we will hear from (name of District Leader/Conference Chair) who will give us the exciting details of the upcoming District 103 Fall Conference. Lead applause. When presenter has finished, call for a 10-minute break and note the time. Tell them where the refreshments, water fountains, restrooms, etc. are located. BREAK 6

Area/Division/District 103 HUMOROUS SPEECH CONTEST Script Please be seated for our next contest. We will now conduct the Humorous Speech Contest. (REMIND AUDIENCE) As with the previous contest, our contestants will be speaking from the following speaking area (demonstrate/show the speaking area for contestants and audience). If you used your cell phone during the break, please ensure that it is on silent alarm, or better yet, turn it off. In addition, please put away your cameras as no pictures can be taken while the contestants are competing. Once the contest has begun, the Sergeant-at-Arms will secure the doors. Members of the audience are asked to refrain from leaving or entering the room during the contest. After the contest, please do not leave the room until it is determined that all ballots have been collected. Contestants, Timers, Ballot Counters, and Sergeant-at-Arms have all been briefed prior to the beginning of this contest. Everyone is aware of the Toastmasters International rules that govern this contest. As a reminder to all, Contestants will have five (5) to seven (7) minutes to deliver their substantially original speech. Contestants who speak less than four (4) minutes 30 seconds or more than 7 minutes 30 seconds will be disqualified. (Lead applause when Chief Judge and Ballot Counters make their exit). Let s get to know our contestants. We will interview the Evaluation Contestants first. Chief Judge will pick up Timer s report and Tie-Breaker ballot. The Ballot Counters will collect completed ballots from all Judges. Ballot Counters will let Chief Judge know when they ve collected all ballots. Chief Judge will inform Contest Toastmaster when all ballots have been collected. Then Chief Judge and Ballot Counters will leave the room to tabulate the results. 10

I now request ALL Evaluation Contestants to please join me for a brief interview. Please line up in the order in which you competed. Audience, you can take photos of the contestants at this time. Contestants, after I interview you, go to the end of the line. After all contestants have been interviewed, we will take a few group shots to represent the Evaluation Speech Contest. Then you may return to your seat. Let s begin our interviews with (use information in box below) LEAD APPLAUSE. Read the winner information exactly as printed on the form/certificate. No more comments or announcements will be made following the announcement of winners.
