IN TUNE with Columbus 2015-2016 SEASON
T hrills and chills? Are you that sort of person? Well, in our opinion, nothing in the world of music is quite as thrilling, or sometimes quite as chilling, as a live, in person, symphony orchestra in full flight. And if you want to know all the things an orchestra can do, the CSO s 2015-2016 season has the answer. Join us and you will hear the many colors of the Mussorgsky/Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition, the triumphant emotional journey that is Beethoven s Symphony No. 9 (with choral groups from Columbus State University, Auburn University, and LaGrange College), the brilliant orchestration of Respighi s Pines of Rome, and the grandeur of a Bruckner symphony. There are also concerti by Brahms and Prokofiev played by wonderful rising young artists. There s a festival presentation of the music of Mozart & Friends starring Wendy Warner, Alexander Kobrin, and Sergiu Schwartz. Pops and Family concerts will feature the music of John Williams and the music of the dynamic duo of Elton John and Billy Joel. We re as excited as we have ever been to be able to offer such a terrific season, and we don t thrill (or chill) that easily. So, peruse this brochure for all the relevant details and purchase your tickets today! Nothing would give us greater pleasure than to see you at the Symphony. George Del Gobbo Music Director and Conductor Columbus Symphony Orchestra
EDUCATION AND OUTREACH The purpose of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra is to bring beautiful music to the people of the Chattahoochee Valley. This is accomplished through both conventional (concerts in concert halls) and unconventional (education/outreach programs) ways. Your financial support of this work allows us to spread the joy of music into every corner of our community. ART ATTACKS! A string quartet in a bank lobby? A brass trio in the produce section of your local supermarket? A harpist in the lobby of a hospital? Encountering conventional music in unconventional places: this is what Art Attacks! are all about. The CSO plays the soundtrack of your life. Now you can expect to run into us as you go about your daily routine. We hope our music will lift you up and brighten your day just a little. THE ORCHESTRA UP CLOSE The inspirational qualities of music can be a powerful force in shaping the education of our children. This program is designed to introduce very young children to music through exposure to the instruments of the orchestra. Small ensembles of CSO musicians present hour-long programs to small groups of children, allowing for an up close intimacy that is not possible at larger concerts. The musicians perform and talk about their instruments. The children have the opportunity to make observations, to ask questions, and, most importantly, to touch and play the variety of instruments in the CSO instrument petting zoo. This program is available to schools throughout the region, and is presented to more than 6,000 children annually. SYMPHONY U Did you ever wonder what makes some music Baroque and other music Romantic? Are you curious about how the instruments of the orchestra work? Do you want to know what a conductor really does? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then Symphony U is for you. Held annually (usually in the spring) on three consecutive Monday evenings, conductor Professor George Del Gobbo will lead the class while you sip a glass of your favorite wine and munch on delicious hors d oeuvres. And no homework or tests. That s how we roll at the U. COMPLIMENTARY TICKETS FOR STUDENTS Each season the Columbus Symphony Orchestra works with our partners in education to provide complimentary concert tickets to more than 1,000 children in schools throughout the Chattahoochee Valley. Capturing the attention and cultivating the interest of our youngest potential patrons is vital not only as an enrichment of their personal lives, but to the survival of our art. This would not be possible without your generous support.

S mores S MORES are open dress rehearsals with an informal and all-inclusive atmosphere. The CSO is breaking the financial barrier by encouraging attendees to pay what you want. By allowing YOU to set the price, S MORES eliminates hesitation and exposes people who have not had the capabilities to partake in the music that is being created here in Columbus. S MORES begins at 12:30 PM and last the duration of a rehearsal (no later than 3:30 PM). For more information call (706) 256-3640. Know the Score One hour prior to each classical concert in Studio Theatre, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra offers a casual pre-concert event called Know the Score. This thirty minute lecture/interview/discussion is led by Maestro Del Gobb and offers some insight into the repertoire on that evening s concert as well as occasional visits from guest artists and other persons of interest. Admission is free to concert ticket holders and includes a complimentary glass of wine. (Mr. Del Gobbo believes he sounds a lot smarter and more charming when his audience is drinking wine.)
