DESTINATION Italy is the cradle of so much magnificent music and culture. Everybody deserves a chance to sing there at least once. Music of the Masters 3
MESSAGE & REPERTOIRE Colleagues, Imagine the following scenario: an exquisitely balanced and perfectly tuned chord sounds and then releases with a shimmering reverberation only possible in one of the world s most beautiful cathedrals. You and your students can experience this mountaintop moment again and again during the magnificent festival outlined by KIconcerts in this brochure. Consider for a moment the relevance of performing unaccompanied works by Monteverdi and Palestrina in the very spaces for which they were conceived. Feel in your inner spirit the sense of accomplishment from having mastered the intricate harmonies of the Impressionistic and jazz-influenced a cappella motets of French composer Pierre Villette. Ponder the significance of singing the forbidden Latin motets of William Byrd, whose recalcitrant Catholicism would not be quelled by the forces of monarchical oppression, in the Vatican itself. Contemplate the power and majesty of Anton Bruckner s harmonically driven settings of devotional texts. Think about sharing the vast heritage of African-American spirituals arranged by William Dawson, Jester Hairston, Moses Hogan, and William Henry Smith with an eager European audience! All of these ideals are not merely market driven selling points; rather they are the true and constant refrain of eliciting a passion for a higher level of the human experience through the intrinsic power of genuine music-making. It is my distinct honor to lead this journey of musical exploration and I heartily invite your participation. Please do not hesitate to contact me at sean.burton@briarcliff.edu if I can be of further assistance. Sincerely, - Sean DISCOVER ITALY: with Dr. Sean Burton 4
