Container List Series V: General Manager's Files 1960-1991 (189 boxes; 79.25 lf.) The General Manager of the Festival was responsible for both the regular New York Shakespeare Festival season and the extended runs of Broadway and touring companies. The General Manager was directly responsible for the "regular" programming of the Festival including the Delacorte/Public Theater/Mobile Theater while the extended programming was delegated to a Company Manager (Laurie Wilson, Bob MacDonald). The Company Manager would send some files for the General Manager to see, especially contracts. Staff and accounting for regular and extended programming were separate. The General Manager oversaw everything: day-today activities, "internal" mechanics of "in-house" business, unions, etc. while road shows were delegated to the Company Manager. The General Manager kept B'way files in the office of the Public Theater. The distinction between "regular" programming of the Delacorte and Public Theater and the "extended" programming at Lincoln Center, on tours, and in TV and film work, was a common distinction made by staff that is evident in the NYSF Board minutes and quarterly reports. Records were sent to the General Manager or to the Archives Office either during a program's run or after. They would be stored by the General Manager in already created "Broadway" files in the Public Theater office. General Manager and Company Manager both sent inactive files to the Archives Office during certain intervals. In each case, the files were kept separate from the regular Delacorte/Public Theater-based production records. There was regular communication between the separate offices of the Company Manager and the General Manager. Active records, such as union contracts, were sent directly to the General Manager by the Company Manager, so there are "Broadway" contracts and union-related info found in the General Manager files. Other records from an extended show were stored in the General Manager's "Broadway" files, which were maintained separately. Some records were sent directly by the Company Manager to the Festival Archivist from the road. Ultimately, all extended programming files were maintained separately and labelled General Manager - Broadway. Company managers would sometimes "graduate" and later become general manager (Laurie Wilson, Bob MacDonald). Bob Kamlot was hired to be manager for the Lincoln Center programs, he later became a general manager.
