Halifax Adjudicators Concert Band/Orchestral/Chamber Ensemble Greg Burton Greg teaches in the Music Department at Mount Allison University, and is a former Music Director of the York Symphony Orchestra, University of Toronto Wind Ensemble, and McMaster University Chamber Orchestra. Jason Caslor Jason is Associate Director of Bands and Orchestras at Arizona State University. From 2010-15 he was Assistant rofessor of Instrumental Conducting at Memorial University. He also serves as Music Director of the Hamilton hilharmonic Youth Orchestra. Jonathan Dagenais Jonathan holds a Masters degree in Wind Orchestra Conducting and a Bachelor s degree in Composition. His works have been performed by many Canadian university ensembles. Linda Wharton Linda is a Western University grad, and has taught instrumental music for 32 years. She received an Award of Excellence with the Thames Valley District School Board, and the Dennis Brown Lifetime Achievement Award (Jack Richardson Music Awards). Halifax Adjudicators Instrumental Jazz Jim Doxas Jim s work can be heard on over 150 albums and soundtracks, and he is a popular featured artist at jazz festivals worldwide. Current projects include Riverside, the Oliver Jones Trio, and the Jim Doxas Trio. He is a lecturer and teacher at McGill University. Kevin Watson Chris Mitchell Chris is Associate Director of Music at the Fountain School of erforming Arts, Dalhousie University. His quintet won the prestigious rix de Jazz DuMaurier at the 1999 Montréal Jazz Festival, and he has performed with many Juno and ECMAwinning artists. Kevin is an Assistant rofessor of Music Education at Western University, and serves as Artistic Director of the Western University Jazz Ensemble. A graduate of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and the Berklee College of Music, Kevin regularly serves as a music festival adjudicator and clinician. Halifax Adjudicators Concert/Chamber/Jazz Choir Scott Leithead Scott is founder and Artistic Director of Canada s Kokopelli Choir Association and TIME Association. Under his direction, Kokopelli was the winner of the 2015 CBC National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs, and the 2015 and 2016 Canadian National Music Compeition. Kelsea McLean Keslea is Artistic Director of Sirens, a women s choir based in Charlottetown. Sirens won the Richard W. Cooke Award at the FCMF National Music Festival, placing first in the Choral Ensemble class in 2015. Sirens also earned a 2015 Music EI nomination for Achievement in Classical or Jazz. London Adjudicators Concert Band/Orchestra/Chamber Ensemble Christine Blanchard Christine is a conductor and music educator, and directs the Holland College Welshmen Community Concert Band. She co-wrote the EI Instrumental Music Curriculum and piloted the Styles of opular Music course. She is chair of the EI Senior High Honors Band and has adjudicated at festivals across Canada. Instrumental Jazz Richard Burrows Richard is a founding member of the TorQ ercussion Quartet. He holds two Masters degrees from the University of Toronto, and is an active adjudicator and clinician with a specialization in improvisation. He has organized and performed in numerous events under the auspices of the Open Ears Festival. Mark Kelso Mark heads the ercussion Department at Humber College and is one of Canada s most sought-after drummers. He has performed with many jazz luminaries, and his own band The Jazz Exiles has been nominated for a Juno Award. To date he has played on over 285 recordings, and has also been featured in Drums, ETC, Canadian Musician, and Modern Drummer magazines. Halifax Featured erformers Stadacona Band of the Royal Canadian Navy For over 70 years the Stadacona Band has been a mainstay in the Maritime military community. Since its inception the band has been based in Halifax, Nova Scotia and has worked tirelessly to promote esprit de corps and morale within the Canadian Forces. In addition to providing musical support to the Canadian Forces, the Stadacona Band works with numerous charitable organizations to better many local communities on the east coast. The band is comprised of thirty-five professional musicians from across Canada. Whether performing on the parade square, welcoming Canadian or international naval vessels, or in a formal concert hall, the Stadacona Band is often referred to as the finest band in the land. The Mingus roject The music of Charles Mingus is filled with the roots of jazz and blues, complex rhythms and powerful melodies. Six of Atlantic Canada s most in demand jazz musicians join together to pay tribute to The Music of Charlie Mingus. The group consists of Dave Staples (piano), Chris Mitchell (saxes), aul Tynan (trumpet), Danny Martin (trombone), Tom Roach (drums) and Tom Easley (bass). The Mingus roject was started 5 years ago and has been featured at The Halifax Jazz Festival and various concert series in NS. The group is excited to get together again this fall to pay homage to the music of Charles Mingus on the same week that he would have turned 95. Halifax Featured erformers Boarding arty Campbell Ryga Yamaha erforming Artist Boarding arty is a Top 40 rock & roll offshoot of the Stadacona Band. Featuring John Doe (vocals), John Doe (trumpet), John Doe (saxophone), John Doe (trombone), John Doe (keyboard), John Doe (electric guitar), John Doe (bass), and John Doe (drums). Mr. Ryga performs Tuesday night with The Mingus roject and Wednesday night with the Stadacona Band of the Royal Canadian Navy. Campbell Ryga is a 3-time Juno Award-winner, a Grammy nominee, and has twice received Western Canadian Music Awards for his jazz albums. He appeared on Michael Bublé s recording Crazy Love, which won a Grammy in 2010. He has contributed to 72 jazz recordings, including four as band leader, tours internationally, and has performed four week-long engagements at the famed Ronnie Scott s Jazz Club in SoHo, London. Campbell is a founding member of the internationally-acclaimed Hugh Fraser Quintet, an all-star award winning Canadian jazz ensemble. He also maintains a busy schedule as a clinician and adjudicator, and has sat on jury boards for the British Columbia Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. In 2000, Campbell was named Canada s Alto Saxophonist of the Year by Jazz Report Magazine. In 2010 he was inducted to the Envisions Jazz Festival of Fame. 16 17
