Sweet and funny but asks a dead serious question. By mrc333 As one who grew up in the 60's/70's this book brought back happy summer memories. Ten Speeds and Stingrays, the smell of chlorine, scorching blacktop, first crushes and of course fireworks-- remember when the were still legal? This story had me laughing as the kid Mark tells what it is like being the youngest boy in a big family with older brothers, and trying to figure out the mystery of girls-- one minute they are punching you, the next minute professing their love! Still sometimes it is only as a child that we are horrified at the senselessness of War and the realization that humans would deliberately kill other humans. So though the story is lighthearted and humorous, it also made me sad. Though times have changed much since Mark celebrated his 11th birthday, once again we are fighting a War (several actually) for no reason or purpose. Cute By Nela This book was all from the perspective of a very young boy (10-11) who learns all about his birthday from a teacher he has while the he is "the new kid" from Seattle living in the south. There's a lot of Wonder Yearsesque dialogue between him and you the reader but it's no different than talking to a young kid. He tells

about his family, his siblings, just what life is like growing up in Vietnam-era America. It made me smile while I read it. It's a pretty good read, quick, yet historically there is so much in it. It made me look up quite a bit of this information and indeed, July 3 was a very important day in American history.
