Poetry Ancient Greek: ποιεω (poieo) = I create T E S TradiTonal poetry is language arranged in lines, with a regular rhythm and oien a definite rhyme scheme. Poetry is difficult to define, but most people know when they read it.

Types of Poetry FREE VERSE Refers to poetry that does not follow a prescribed form but is characterized by the irregularity in the length of lines and the lack of a regular metrical pakern and rhyme. Free verse may use other repettve pakerns instead (like words, phrases, and structures). ote: Free verse should not be confused with BLAK VERSE (aka iambic pentameter) Example: They say that your words are a mirror into your soul. Are they? And if they are, does that mean that whoever reads them knows what you're thinking? What if you don't want them to? And if it is a mirror, will everyone see the opposite of what's really there? Do you know the answers? And if you don't, do you know who does? I don't.

Types of Poetry EPIC A long narratve poem on a serious subject or acton involving heroic characters. An epic is told in a formal and elevated style. EXAMPLE The primary epic Beowulf begins: Listen! We have heard of the glory of the Spear Danes in the old days, the kings of tribes how noble princes showed great courage! ien Scyld Scefing seized mead benches from enemy troops, from many a clan; he terrified warriors, even though first he was found a waif, helpless. For that came a remedy, he grew under heaven, prospered in honours untl every last one of the bordering natons beyond the whale road had to heed him, pay him tribute. He was a good king!

Types of Poetry BALLAD A song like narratve that has short stanzas and a refrain. EXAMPLE The Ballad of Kubla Khan

Types of Poetry HAIKU A poem of seventeen syllables arranged in three lines. The first and third lines contain five syllables; the second line seven (5 7 5). The haiku is the shortest form in Japanese poetry. It frequently expresses delicate emoton or presents an image (frequently one of a natural object or scene). Example: A bare pecan tree slips a pencil shadow down a moonlit snow slope. Etheridge Knight

Types of Poetry SET A type of poetry with three four line stanzas followed by a two line stanza called a couplet that rhymes.
