A²B²D Newsletter Alumni Applied, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Diepenbeek Diepenbeek, March 08 Dear A²B²D members, dear students, When I was told that it was again time for another issue of our newsletter, I realized that again a few months have passed. Is it just me, or is time going so unbelievably fast? I remember very vividly the first activity together with our new students during the Introduction Day (very) shy, new in the country with many practical questions. And now, if I walk through the hallways I see the same people, some still shy, others quite the opposite, walking around, like they have been here forever. With the second term finished, the last straight line towards the end of the year is entered. Homeworks have to be made, classes to be attended, busy, busy, busy. Please don t lose yourself in the workload. Try to find some time to relax as well. Whether you do this together with A²B²D or by yourself that s up to you, but please find some time to discover the social and cultural life in Belgium as well. Studying (and working) is not the most important thing in life, and certainly not the only thing! This brings back memories of past A²B²D activities: visits to the Jenever Festival, New Year s drinks, ice skating, snowboarding, karaoke and many more. Many of which are well documented with pictures on our website by the way. Take a look at the pictures of past activities and especially notice the faces of the students (and the board members). You will see that everybody, without exception, is smiling. That s our goal! Relax and don t work too hard! Philippe Haldermans Your Vice President

Did you know That the A 2 B 2 D went snowboarding last February 19 th? See some pictures and read more about it in this issue. That the karaoke party last February 1 st was a success? Who knew what talents abound in CenStat??? Read further to know more about the evening and to see some pictures. That the baby boom among CenStat staff is still very much alive with the birth of the son of Roel Braekers? Congratulations to Roel and Elke on the birth of their son, Quinten, last February 21 st. That the CenStat T-Shirt is still available? For all our new students, the t-shirt features the CenStat logo and Ten Reasons to Be a Statistician. You can get your shirts at room H10. CenStat limited edition coffee mugs are also available. 2

A 2 B 2 D Sings the Night Away by Emanuele Del Fava Thank you for the music, the songs I'm singing Thanks for all the joy they're bringing Who can live without it, I ask in all honesty What would life be Without a song or a dance what are we So I say thank you for the music For giving it to me. (ABBA, Thank You for The Music) I really think that all the (few, actually ) people who took part in the Karaoke Party last February 1 st in the Agora of Hasselt University will agree with the quoted verses from ABBA (moreover, I think that also that song was sung!) regarding the very enjoyable musical evening organized by CenStat (thanks very much, CenStat!), in order to celebrate lots of occurrences: the end of the exam period, the Chinese New Year (Year of the Rat, Year of Wu Zi or Year 4705 of Chinese calendar) and the beginning of the second term. The party began quietly, as it usually happens during parties, since it was time for dinner (pizza ) and the alcoholic rate was still low: indeed sometimes people can be a little frightened by exhibiting in public, and thus, some beers (very light beers, of course) can help to lower the tension. Fortunately some brave ones got the evening started. There was a book with a lot of songs in several languages: Dutch, English, Spanish, French, German and Italian. One had only to write on a little piece of paper the song he/she wanted to sing and then wait for its time. The winners of this Language Competition were English, Dutch, Spanish and Italian. Then, one after the other, people started their performances sometimes alone, sometimes in couple, more often in groups of 4, 5, 6, 8 people the more, the better (so nobody could recognize the voice of the single singer!). 3

The A 2 B 2 D Board tries to Get the Party Started ala Britney. Here are the highlights of the Karaoke Party. In third position, we find the Hair Hungarian Dance, which is a crazy hair dance to the notes of an ABBA song (if I remember well) performed by a Hungarian Ph.D. student. Really funny! Brahms would be glad with this pupil In second position, we find the Spanish Moments: either when we danced on the exuberant notes of the most famous Spanish dance songs of these last years, or when we sang some hits like Macarena (1996, Los del Rìo) or La camisa negra (2005, Juanes), the Spanish music always showed its capacity to let your whole body move in an unbridled dance. Finally, in first position and the winner is No Woman, No Cry (1975, Bob Marley and the Wailers): sung a lot of times by many people with more or less flat voices. It was certainly the evergreen of that night and it had also the honour of closing the party around 1 am. From that night on, everyone who was there will always remember when Bob and his Jamaican companions used to sit / in the government yard in Trenchtown. 4

In conclusion, what I could say really an amazing event of music and enjoyment, where everyone has shown their own love for beautiful songs. Even though many people came back home completely without voice (like me!), it has surely been a beautiful experience to be repeated as soon as possible. The Italian contingent, led by Emanuele, shows their stuff. This would be what some might call effortless singing. Though the DJ did not have any Chinese selections, the China contestants managed a few numbers in English. Past A 2 B 2 D President, Saskia, Tina and Kris, belted out Gloria Gaynor s I Will Survive. The question is Would the audience??? 5

We witnessed a lot of duets that evening For instance: Olivia Newton-John & John Travolta, Barbra Streisand & Celine Dion, and Luciano Pavarotti & Placido Domingo. There was also quadruplet singing... and in groups of five. 6

But most of all, there was group singing... and, of course, group dancing. CenStat students enjoying the evening after a gruelling week of exams. 7

The Diepenbeek gangstas did a pretty good job rapping P. Diddy s I ll Be Missin You. A 2 B 2 D President Niel and his gang sang Frank Sinatra s My Way but they did it THEIR way. 8

Snowboarding ALMA Winter Sports Event 2007 (Skiing in the Nederlands) by Matus Maciak I was born and raised in the country with high mountains were you can easily reach almost up to the sea level of 3 kilometers. This brings a special climate of course. There is snow all year long, some ice fields and, especially during the winter period, avalanche warnings wherever you look. And that s the place where I have learnt to ski. That is the place where I go to ski every year. And you can ski down the hill even a few kilometers without any break! Based on this, I have considered Netherlands as a totally flat country. A country which is ideal for cycling, jogging, speed-skating and sports like that. So, now you probably have a good clue what I was thinking when I saw an email from Dirk in my mailbox announcing a possibility to take a trip to Netherlands and to SKI there!!! Nonsense! I thought at first. The only way you can ski in such a flat country as Netherlands is via a PC simulation, I said. I had to make sure there was no joke in there! So, I talked to a friend of mine, Michal who had a chance to experience the same trip last year. It is excellent! he told me. You will certainly love it! But remember, the only possible way to ski that small hill down is to go just straight down! So, I subscribed and I did not even know what to expect. I also made Emanuele go there. And you know what? Dirk was right! We arrived at that place. The only hill in the Netherlands at all. Completely covered with a roof. And what is inside? There is a huge fridge - it was 5 C inside - where you can really ski. We had more than 4 hours to fully experience skiing in the Netherlands. And I loved it. And I am sure everybody else did too! 9

Excellent service (perfect ski, perfect snow, perfect lifts), nice people (Dirk, Emanuele, Jeff), great Belgian beer (Duvel), nice weather (electric lights), and a great feel (music, talking with others, etc.)! It was an excellent trip. And since now, there is one more extra thing I have already tried in my life: I was skiing in Netherlands! And it was amazing! Matus, Dirk and Jeff aboard the lift, eagerly awaiting their chance to hit the slopes. Steady, steady Got it!!! 10

Activities Movie Night On April 8, we are planning to go see a movie, either in Hasselt or Genk. Details have yet to be finalized and we shall inform you via email about the event in the coming weeks. Soccer Games As part of the A 2 B 2 D sporting activities, it has become a tradition that Applied and Biostatistics students take time off every Friday afternoon for a football match. This weekly event takes place in Fitlink sports centre from 17-19h every Friday. This is expected to be an interesting and particularly relaxing atmosphere. And for free, you become physically fit. Practical arrangements may be obtained from Harrison Macharia (harrison.macharia@student.uhasselt.be), one of the Biostatistics students currently responsible for arranging games. Hope to see you there! 11
