The C C H S Newsletter Carroll County Historical Society P. O. Box 1308 Carrollton, GA 30112 MAY 2015 Windmills and Flowers A History of the Cottage Hill Greenhouses and Florist Gwyn Chesnut and Carter Clay to Speak at October 20th Meeting Who better to tell the story of the Cottage Hill Greenhouses and Florist than Gwyn Brown Chesnut and Carter Clay, daughter and grandson of Herman and Pansy Brown, founder and owner of the business? Growing up in the family business that started in 1945 gave Gwyn a unique perspective of that era, the business, and its impact on Carroll County. For many years it was the only greenhouse in west Georgia. House plants and seasonal outdoor plants were important products of the four greenhouses. The addition of the floral shop was a natural expansion of the business at a time when every holiday and special occasion involved roses, bouquets, corsages, and orchids. Many people like Mrs. Hazel Whitman were introduced to the floral trade by Mr. Brown and some of them around Carrollton are still involved. They will present the story in both words and vintage photographs for the first time to the Society. Please join us this evening for an informative history of the present-day Crossroads Shopping Center area. Light Refreshments will be served. The public is cordially invited. Tuesday 6:30 PM Stallings Community Center Lions Parks Room

Remembering The Old Carroll Theater P a g e 2 Several related items have been donated to the Carroll County Historical Society Archives in recent years on the old Carroll Theater, once located on Newnan St. in Carrollton where the Confederate Monument and new justice Center are now located. 1. A schedule of movies from 1927, the first week of the Carroll Theater opened for business donated in a collection by Patricia Turner Morris. 2. A small blue pocket size movie schedule from 1933 donated in a collection by Mildred Lovvorn 3. Three small window size movie posters from 1959 donated by Robin D. Bales of Manassas, VA Before the Carroll Theater opened for business, the Carrollton Square was home to The Vaudette, The Bonita, and The Strand. These motion picture theaters were more or less nickelodeon type establishments where you could watch a silent movie for a nickel. In 1927 the first talkie or talking picture, The Jazz Singer starring Al Jolson was shown in Carrollton at The Stand, located in the Arcade building next to the 4-story Peoples Bank building. Just two years later The Carroll Amusement Company got its start with the opening of the Carroll Theater the first week of November 1929. The Carroll Amusement Company was co-owned by J. Ebb Duncan, Dr, Oscar Roberts, Jr. and A. Q. Dobbs. Ebb Duncan of Douglasville came to Carrollton to become the theater s film buyer and later served as a long-time politician in the Georgia House and State Senate. The film booker was a Mr. Hewlett C. Jones. The Amusement Company eventually owned and operated a number of motion picture movie house and theaters throughout Georgia including the Carroll Theater on Newnan St. where the Justice Center is now, the Playhouse where B-rated movies and westerns were shown, and the Carroll Drive-In Theater on the Bremen Hwy. Ebb Duncan married Nette Talmadge Tyus, sister of GA Gov. Eugene Talmadge, after her first husband died, and they had three sons Robert Bobby, Richard and Ebb, Jr. who all worked at one time or another in one of their father s Carrolton theaters. P a g e 3 WINDMILLS AND FLOWERS Have you ever wondered about the windmill that stands behind the Crossroads Shopping Center or the history of what was there before that shopping center was built? In 1975, the Georgia DOT took the old farm and greenhouses to build the Carrollton by-pass and in 1976 Carroll County celebrated it sesquicentennial and the national bicentennial. Gwyn Brown Chesnut and Carter Clay will present a program about the Cottage Hill Greenhouses and Florist - their family s former business- at the Tuesday, October 20 th Carroll County Historical Society meeting. It will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Stallings Building (former Carrollton High School). Come to this meeting and go back into the history of this area of our town for some interesting history. Visitors are welcome.
