POL 444Y/2008Y A. Brudner Law: #406, Flavelle House 978-4414 THE POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY OF G.W.F. HEGEL In this course we study Hegel's political philosophy through a reading of the Philosophy of Right and of a substantial part of the Phenomenology of Spirit. While the course will be primarily devoted to a close reading of these texts, several general themes will emerge. These include Hegel's understanding of the relationship between philosophic knowledge and the state, his understanding of the relationship between the ancient and modern worlds, his differences with Kant on the status of law and political life, and his place with respect to the tradition of liberal political theory. Evaluation There are three evaluation options: 1) Two essays, one per term. Each essay should be a minimum of twenty double-spaced, typed pages and should attempt to explicate some aspect of Hegel's social and political thought. Each essay is worth 50% of the final mark and is due on the day of the last class of the term. 2) Three essays 12-15 pages in length. At least one essay must deal with the work covered in the fall or spring term. Each essay is worth 331/3% of the final mark. 3) One 40-page essay due on the day of the last class of the year, and worth 90% (for graduate students) or 100% (for law students) of the final mark. This option is available to law and graduate students only. Graduate students will also be asked to give a class presentation, worth 10% of their final mark, dealing (if they wish) with their essay-in-progress. The penalty for late essays is 1% per day of lateness. A list of suggested essay topics will be handed out in due course. Required Texts Hegel, The Phenomenology of Spirit, trans.
