2 ditor s Note Giovanni Gastoldi (c.15541609) was a very popular Italian cooser Renaissance period. He spent most of his career servg as maestro di cappella for Gonzaga family Mantua. Although he coleted a variety of sacred works, madrigals, and strumental pieces, his two sets of letti re his most famous and fluential. The editions of both Balletti a cque ci (Balletti for five ices), first prted 1591, and Balletti a tre ci (Balletti for three ices), first prted 1594, re homophonic settgs for ices with passages of nonsense syllables (such as fa, la, la). They re quite popular cause of ir tunefulness and silicity, and re tended to sung, played, and d. rigally scored for threepart ices Gastoldi s 1594 collection, this arrangement features editor s nglish settg low origal Italian text. Although it would very effective to perform work a cappella, it would also acceptable to use recorders, or woodwds, strgs, or optional flute, keyboard, and hand drum parts. Instruments re often used Renaissance period for doublg or replacg cal parts. Perform natemi un Balletto lightly and energetically with a feelg of two pulsations for each measure. Performers should ehasize normally stressed syllables of Italian words, dicated with accent marks low.
