A ew words about (and by) the comoser Stan Grill was raised in the Bronx, studied at the Bronx House School o Music, and later graduated rom the Manhattan School o Music with undergrad and graduate degrees in music theory He studied iano with Robert Hels and Leon Kushner and comosition with Ursula Mamlok and oseh rostako Maor works include music or string orchestra and voice, string orchestra and clarinet, a nonet or winds and strings, and several song cycles or mixed voices and chamber ensemble erormances have been roduced by the comoser, as well as resented by the Comosers Guild o New ersey, the St aul s Church estival o the Arts, the Leonia Chamber layers, the New York Comosers Circle, the Northern New ersey Camerata, the Bronx Arts Ensemble and the Duo + Ensemble During the 2004-06 seasons, he was comoser in residence o One World Symhony, a New York City based orchestra One World Symhony has remiered several maor works, including Invisible Ballet or orchestra, Two Sad Songs setting oems by WB Yeats or sorano & string orchestra, and a cycle o songs or two cellos and two mezzo soranos setting oems by the New ersey oet William Carlos Williams In 2006, One World commissioned three works a setting o the Ohelia songs rom Shakeseare s Hamlet or sorano, har and string orchestra, an orchestral work, "luto," or a rogram eaturing Holst s The lanets, and a setting o oetry or a concert honoring those who lost their lives on 9/11 Recent works include "The our Elements" or viola and string orchestra commissioned by violist Brett Deubner and "Mystical Songs" or sorano, viola and string orchestra commissioned by the Universidad Tecnica articular de Loa In 2009, an entire rogram o music by Stan Grill was erormed in Tokyo by the Duo + Ensemble He currently works in hiladelia, and lives haily in New ersey with his wie, cats and iano As I see it, as much as we strive to ind reason and urose in our having been born into this amazing, mysterious and awe-insiring universe, that attemt is largely utile It is however, the best art o our nature that obliges us to make the attemt, though the most we can hoe or is to gain some small degree o understanding o the world around us, and, more imortantly, o ourselves To achieve this, we each aroach the roblem in our own way, uniquely shaed by our cultural background, innate talents and abilities, education and so on or some, science may be the window through which they best erceive and interret the world, or others, religion or those to whom the world seems to exress itsel most clearly and beautiully through sound, music is the voice that seaks to us and through which we, in turn, best exress ourselves Now, I can write notes that will make retty music because I ve been trained to do so but the best o my music has arrived, rather inexlicably, as art o a ersonal eort to understand the world and mysel It is, in a way, an act o translation The world says something, I try to understand it, and then translate it into musical language The articular musical language which I seak, is, o course, a roduct o my conservatory training and ersonal musical tastes, but hoeully, the outcome, imerect a translation as it may be, will convey to others something o its original intent Stan's music is melodic, modal, contrauntal, characterized by extended, interweaving lines His musical inluences san the centuries, and include Machaut, osquin, alestrina, Monteverdi, Lassus, Britten, Ives, Vaughn Williams and Shostakovich Two main themes ermeate many o the ieces - music intended to inluence the minds and hearts o those who hear it in such a way as to encourage thoughts about the ossibility o world eace - and music comosed in an attemt to translate something about the nature o the hysical world Comlete scores are available in the American Music Center's on-line library lease go to Stan's web age at American Music Center
