Introduction to the Sony Signal Routing System The Sony routing system is based on a complete range of flexible, modular, signal routing matrixes. It interfaces to other routing equipment, production and presentation switchers, tally and UMD systems to form multi-signal switching systems. The range includes: DVS-128, a video and audio Routing Switcher DVS-V Series for digital video, with bit-rates ranging from 143 Mbps to 540 Mbps. DVS-A Series for the separate routing of AES/EBU digital audio DVS-RS Series for separate RS-422A and RS-232C control routing DVS-TC Series for separate time code routing BVS-V Series for routing PAL and NTSC composite analog video BVS-A Series for routing analog audio BKPF-300 Series, a range of four boards for digital/analog, video/audio routing. The BKPF-300 Series mount into PFV-D/PFV-HD Series interface units. Some router types have the capability of being expanded to form larger matrix. For example, a DVS-V6464M router has a 64 x 64 matrix. However, using optional cascade kits, several units can be connected to form larger square and rectangular routing matrix up to a maximum of 1024 inputs x 1024 outputs (using the BKPF-R70A primary station). Technical References When forming a multi-switching system, several different signal types may be included in the system digital video and audio, analog video and audio, time code and RS-422A. To allow independent switching of different signal types, routing matrix can be placed on different 'levels' so that signal switching can be independent or married - i.e. two different signal types switched simultaneously. In the Sony routing system, up to sixteen levels are available to accommodate different signal types. S-BUS Router Control Supporting the overall router range is the Routing Control System; a highly sophisticated local area network called Sony S-BUS. However, S-BUS goes beyond just being a control system it is an operational philosophy blending a sophisticated control system with elements such as control panels, production switchers and third-party router integration and tallies. S-BUS connects all these elements together using standard video coaxial cables. This is an advantage, as both interconnection and maintenance are low in cost. S-BUS also features some advanced features: Free I/O assignment across all levels any source or destination can be freely assigned to any crosspoint regardless of physical connection Full signal breakaway sources in a multilevel system can be switched married or unmarried Descriptive naming sources and destinations can be named to match the user's needs 172

Virtual matrix management matrix can be placed virtually within S-BUS space for more efficient operation Tie-line management tie-line management provides for the connection of different routing switchers for signal interconnections Source, destination and crosspoint protection mechanisms sources and destinations can be inhibited, protected or made secret Password protection passwords can be used to restrict the personnel able to make changes Powerful phantom facilities multiple crosspoint changes can be made from a single push-button depression In addition to S-BUS, Sony routing systems can also be controlled from RS-422A. This method of control permits additional flexibility, interfacing to automation system is just one example. In smaller routing matrix, parallel control is adopted to provide a low-cost control system System Control A wide range of control units is available to operate a Sony routing system: Sixteen and thirty-two button-per-source control units Multi-source control units Multi-destination control units X/Y control units Some of these units support VTR transport control, level switching and destination control. A unique feature is that unit software and set-up data can easily be copied from one unit to another using S-BUS. Extended control features, provided by BZR-1000 software running on an IBM compatible machine include: graphic displays of crosspoint maps interactive graphics for system configuration display of video signal sources and destinations on a PC VDU configuration data storage and management logging facilities multiple-user environment Technical References Integrated Systems A key element of Sony routing systems is their ability to provide an integrated solution for the user. Sony routing systems can be interfaced to Sony DVS-7000 Series production switchers and DVS-M1000C presentation switchers. With the high level of integration available, destinations fed from the router to the switcher can be controlled, so that the production switcher is effectively expanded to be able to accommodate all the available sources. In addition the router source names can be displayed on the control panel of the production or presentation switcher. It is also possible to control 173

the router from the switcher and vice-versa. Legacy third-party routing systems may also require to be controlled. Sony routing systems can either control the router or, in some cases, be controlled from the legacy system. Within S-BUS, significant support is provided for tally and tally management. The power of this process is clearly visible in an integrated solution, where tallies can pass through several routers without losing their I/Ds. Sony camera systems can also be interfaced, eliminating separate connections to each CCU for Red and Green tallies. Critical Applications In any mission-critical system, redundancy is a pre-requisite to ensure that the system is available at all times, even in the unlikely event of a power supply or system fault. Sony routing systems are no exception to this philosophy. Backup power supplies are available for most routing and interfacing equipment. Redundancy also extends to being able to provide backup control boards for the CPUs in a routing system. Technical References In addition to providing redundant power supplies and control boards, data is held in on-board memories with a 24-hour battery backup, and can also be saved to floppy disk. In Sony routing systems, BZR-10 software is supplied as an accessory so that the systems data contents can easily be saved. 174

Powerful Control Features of M Series Routers The new M-Series routers, DVS-V3232M and DVS-V6464M, bring powerful system features into the routing switcher system. If a Sony DVS-V3232M or DVS-V6464M is assigned as the primary station in a Sony DVS routing system, the following powerful features become available. 1. Signal naming Names can be set to input/output connectors to differentiate connected signals. There are two styles of the names. (1) "Type (VTR, CAM, etc.) + Number" name Up to four alphabetic characters and three digits, e.g. VTR005. (2) "Description" name Maximum 16 alphanumeric characters, e.g. REPORT_FROM_LA. Up to 1024 "Description" names can be registered in the primary station. These names are displayed on the control panels and under-monitor display units. Technical References 2. Virtual mapping The Virtual Mapping capability of DVS Series routers features two types of mapping. With the first type, a single routing switcher can be mapped to operate as a number of individual routing switchers. For example, a single 32 x 32 2- channel audio switcher can be divided into a 20 x 20 switcher and a 12 x 12 switcher to switch the corresponding crosspoints on two levels simultaneously. This allows a 12 x 12 4-channel switcher to be formed (Figure-1). With the second type of mapping, multiple routing switchers can be mapped on a larger, virtual routing level. (Figure-2) This application could be used in the tie-line management system described later. Figure-1 32 20 1 1 20 32 2 1 Level-1 32 21 21 Level-2 1 20 32 Figure-2 3. Free input and output assignment Free assignment of inputs and outputs allows sources and destinations on the different levels to be grouped under a single source or destination name. For example the video, audio and time code signals of VTR-001 do not have to be assigned to the same channel on each level, but could be assigned as channel 1 of the video router, channel 10 of the audio router and channel 12 of the time code router. This function provides a much more flexible signal handling environment. 4. Tie-line management The tie-line management capability is available when selecting the signals across two or three routing switchers (Figure-4). Shows a typical application where a number of signals are being routed via external devices. By just selecting the source and destination, the control system automatically establishes the desired routing path, including the external devices. When the path is selected, an autoprotection function prevents the selected path from being broken. Up to twenty source/destination routing paths can be automatically set up at any one time with this tie-line management facility. 5. Phantom function This function allows multiple crosspoints to be switched simultaneously with a single touch of one button on a control panel. These groups of crosspoints, known as Phantoms, can be assigned from the control terminal. Two kinds of phantoms are available: (1) Global phantom Registered in the primary station. (2) Local phantom Registered in each remote control unit. Up to 57 crosspoints can be registered as one or more Local phantoms in each control panel. Furthermore, a Global phantom facility allows an additional 4095 crosspoints to be registered as Global phantoms in the routing control systems. 6. Destination protect function The destination protect function inhibits destinations from being reassigned from another control panel. 7. Source secret function This function keeps selected source lines secret from all the control panels. The secret condition can only be set and removed from the control terminal or BZR-1000 control software. 8. Crosspoint protection function This function inhibits individual crosspoints to limit the availability of each source to individual destinations (Figure-5). DVS-V1201/V1616/V3232M/V6464M Digital Video Routing Switcher Serial digital transmission DVS-V Series routing switchers handle SDI (Serial Digital Interface) signals which conform to SMPTE259M and CCIR Revised Recommendation 656. This interface, for which Sony received an Emmy award, brings many benefits to the overall system. Either a component or composite digital video signal, embedded with four channnels of digital audio, is carried via a single coaxical cable, allowing simple connection with other SDI equipped devices such as D-1, D-2, Digital BETACAM VTRs, monitors and DVS video switchers. SDI also gives the benefit of long distance transmission, without any extra equalization. Multiple signal format The DVS-V1616/V3232M/V6464M can operate in a combined environment of both component serial (4:2:2) and composite serial (4ƒsc-NTSC, 4ƒsc-PAL) signals, eliminating the need to provide separate routing systems for the two different signal formats. In such a combined operation, the source and destination selection is completely protected to preclude the routing of incorrect format signals. Monitoring function By adding the optional BKDS-V3292M Monitor Board to M Series routers, independent monitoring of both source and destination signals is provided. The input and output signals can be monitored on separate monitors or a single monitor. Monitoring boards can be cascaded to provide a monitoring function on a large routing system (Figure-6). Two control systems DVS-V3232M/V6464M have two signal switching control systems - S-BUS and RS-422A. Both of them can be used simultaneously in the DVS-V3232M/V6464M. When the S-BUS control system is used, up to 254 routing switchers and control units can communicate via one coaxical cable by using the S-BUS protocol. With the RS-422A control system, three protocols (Cart + Protocol, Audio Mixer Protocol, and Production Switcher Protocol) can be used for Sony broadcast equipment. The RS-422A commands can be converted to S-BUS commands internally to control the S-BUS data link equipment. Flexible routing size With the DVS-V Series, a wide range of matrix sizes, from 12 x 1 to 1024 x 1024 (using the BKPF-R70A primary station), can be built-up and enlarged as a system expands. The DVS-V1201, DVS-V1616 and DVS-V3232M are standalone routing switchers for smaller systems. The DVS-V1201, equipped with 12 inputs by 1 output, may be used as a multipurpose source selector or monitor switcher and used with a DVS-A1201 audio routers in digital editing systems. The DVS-V1616 and DVS-V3232M provide 16 and 32 inputs and outputs respectively. Using optional cascade boards, multiple DVS-V6464M matrix can be assembled into a single routing system of up to 1024 x 1024. Dual references of 525 and 625 allow simultaneous 2-standard vertical interval switching of 60, 59.94 and 50 Hz in blocks of 32 outputs. Monitoring outputs in blocks of 32 channels. All plug-in function boards can be hot-swapped for operational convenience. Each signal type can be mapped into S-BUS space of either 1024 x 1024 with 8 levels, or 1024 x 512 with 16 levels Up to 2048 Description Names registered in eight alphanumeric characters 32 name types selectable Unlimited element groups in tie-line management Mounts in a 19-inch rack, 14U high. Overview The DVS-128 is a compact 128 x 128 routing switcher, introduced to support the continued use of analog video and audio production systems. It is capable of switching analog video, analog audio and digital audio signals at the same time. It can also convert an analog audio input signal into a digital audio output signal or a digital audio input signal to an analog audio output signal. The modular concept of the DVS-128 allows the installation of up to four 32-input blocks and four 32-output blocks, to provide a maximum matrix size of 128 x 128. Input and output blocks for analog video, analog audio and digital audio are available. Video and audio blocks can be installed together for married or unmarried A/V switching. Conversion of analog audio input blocks can be combined with AES/EBU digital audio output blocks so that A to D conversion can occur with the routing process. Likewise, AES/EBU digital audio input blocks can be combined with analog audio output blocks so that D to A conversion takes place during the routing process. The modular design of the DVS-128 enables it to be configured very flexibly. I/O blocks can be added as system requirements grow, and the proportion of video and audio switching altered as requirements change. This flexibility can also be an advantage in space-critical applications such as OB vehicles, avoiding the need to install separate routers for audio and video. The DVS-128 features both Sony S-BUS and RS-422A control. Redundant CPU and PSU modules can be installed, and all input and output boards can be hot-swapped. 202
