Childsplay presents A Social Story

Welcome to Childsplay I will go to see a Childsplay performance of Sideways Stories from Wayside School at the Tempe Center for the Arts. 1

Box Office I may have to wait in line outside the theatre to get my tickets. This area is called the box office. There are three windows and I can go to any window to get my tickets. 2

Greeter When I walk into the lobby, I will be greeted by an usher wearing a white shirt and a purple vest. If I have questions about where to go, I can ask this greeter. 3

Lobby The lobby is a big open space where I can find food, activities, bathrooms and a quiet area. I can explore the lobby before the performance begins. 4

Concession Stand There is a special area where I can buy food and drinks. I need to eat my snacks before I go into the performance, because food is not allowed in the theater. If as I ask for a lid for my drink, I may bring it into the theatre. 5

Gift Shop There is a gift shop where Childsplay sells books, puppets, and activities related to the performance. 6

360 Theatre There is also a special 360 Theatre table with fun information and free activities that I can do before or after the performance. 7

Patio and Reflecting Pool The Tempe Center for the Arts has an outdoor patio that looks out over Tempe Town Lake. I can go out on the patio, but I should not go into the water. If it looks like there is a wedding or a special event on the patio, it is best not to go outside. 8

Art Gallery There is a free art gallery in the Tempe Center for the Arts that may be open during my visit. If it is open, I can go in and look around! 9

Elevator and Stairs If my seat is in the balcony, I might need to take an elevator. If I would rather take the stairs, I can ask an usher to show me the way. 10

Restrooms Before the performance, I might want to use the restroom. There are men s, women s, and family restrooms in the lobby. Next to the bathrooms is a coat check, where I can leave my coat and get a booster seat if I need to see better in the theatre. 11

Quiet Area At any time before or during the performance, I can go to a quiet area in the lobby, where there aren t as many people around. 12

Ushers When I hear a bell, it is time to go into the theater. I will wait in line and give my ticket to the usher. The usher will tear my ticket and give half back to me. The usher will also hand me a program, but I don t have to take it if I don t want it. 13

Seats I may have an assigned seat. I should look at the side of the seats for the row letter and the top of the seat chairs for the seat number. An usher inside the theater will help me find my seat. 14

In the house I will be sitting with my family, but there may also be people sitting around me whom I don t know. Once everyone is seated, the lights will go down and the performance will begin. It will be dark in the theatre during the performance, but I will be safe. If I need help during the performance, I can always find an usher standing near the door. 15

During the Show During Sideways Stories from Wayside School, several of the characters will sing and dance. I will watch them quietly and, if I like their performance, I will clap at the end of the song. 16

During the Show Sideways Stories from Wayside School is about a group of students who are scared of their teacher because she turns them into apples! The actors playing the students may sometimes scream if they are scared. There may also be flashes of light and loud noises. I will remember that the actors are pretending, and that there is nothing unsafe about the performance. If it gets too loud, I can cover my ears. 17

Curtain Call Question and Answer At the end of the performance, the actors will take a bow. If I liked the performance, I can clap for them. After the bows, the actors will introduce themselves. They may ask the audience a question or see if anyone has a question for them. If I want to speak, I will raise my hand and wait to be called on. I know that not everyone will have a chance to speak, so I will make sure to remember my question for later. 18

Meet and Greet The actors will stay onstage after the performance and I can meet them if I want to! I can also just leave the theater with my family. We look forward to seeing you at the theater! 19
