The Bagpipe Buyer s Guide

Choosing The Right Bagipe Choosing the right set of bagpipes can be challenging and we hope this guide will help you make the right choice when ordering your bagpipes made by R. G. Hardie & Co. Worldwide there are a number of manufacturers and then there is R.G. Hardie & Co. Since 1950 we have been hand crafting the world s finest bagpipes and pipers around the world have enjoyed the magnificent sound of our instruments. In 1972 Hardie s also acquired the Peter Henderson brand and we have continued the tradition associated with this brand since 1868. Features of the Peter Henderson pipes are evident throughout the Hardie range. We are proud of our commitment to traditional skills which we firmly believe produce the finest sounding and meticulously crafted bagpipes that will be treasured for years to come. We would like to share with you our extensive knowledge in bagpipe making and our experiences playing at the highest level of solo piping and pipe band competition to assist you in choosing your heirloom set of bagpipes. t: +44 (0)141 333 5696 e: info@ Find out more. How Does A Bagpipe Work? Enjoy playing effortlessly. Many people think bagpipes are one of the most complex and difficult instruments to play but by choosing the right bagpipe and accessories you will enjoy playing effortlessly. The bagpipe works by blowing air through a blowpipe into the pipe bag which pushes air through the reeds. The reeds vibrate projecting a sound through the drones and pipe chanter. When you buy your first set it is important to choose the right options so your posture allows playing without discomfort. RGH04 t: +44 (0)141 333 5696 e: info@ Find out more. Visit us online at

The Drones The best of Henderson and Hardie combined. Bagpipes are made from seasoned African Blackwood, a hardwood selected for its durability and instrument tonal qualities. There are three drones in a set including one bass and two tenor drones. Each drone comprises a series of different diameter bores finishing off with a bell at the top of the drone projecting a magnificent sound to compliment the chanter. The geometry and concentricity of the bores determines the quality and vibrancy of our drone sound. Our range of fine quality bagpipes are based on a 1924 vintage set of Peter Henderson bagpipes with the bottom bass joint having a Hardie bore. These bagpipes produce a rich, resonant sound accommodating a wide range of reeds that can be fine tuned with ease. The price of a set of bagpipes is primarily determined by the accoutrements where a plain nickel set such as the RGH01 will be the lowest priced and a PH06H with full engraved silver with be the highest. All sets regardless of price will be meticulously crafted and you can be rest assured of receiving a fine quality instrument. PH06H Thistle t: +44 (0)141 333 5696 e: info@ Find out more. The Chanter A chanter is made from either blackwood or delrin, a special polymer chosen for its durability and tonal qualities. A blackwood chanter produces a rich, mellow tone while the delrin chanter will project a robust tone. Both chanter models will fulfil the aspirations of any solo piper or pipe band. With only ten holes to adjust one might assume the design of a chanter is a simple task. However we have spent years producing hundreds if not thousands of chanters to finalise our chanters which are recognised today as a first class instrument. The blackwood chanter is played by pipers winning the highest accolades in solo piping including the Argyllshire Gathering Gold Medal, the Northern Meeting Clasp, Bratach Gorm and the Glenfiddich Piping Championship. The plastic chanter has gained a reputation for projection, stability and pitch which makes it the first chanter of choice for many pipe bands. PH Blackwood Chanter Each and every chanter is hand inspected and tested by world champion pipers. t: +44 (0)141 333 5696 e: info@ Find out more. Visit us online at

The Blowpipe & Pipe Bag Getting this decision right makes sure you are comfortable while playing the instrument. Here is what we recommend based on height: Once you have selected your pipes, you can focus on the accessories. 5 0 5 7 small pipe bag and 8 blowpipe 5 8 5 11 medium pipe bag and 9 /10 blowpipe 6 0 and above large pipe bag and 11 /12 blowpipe We offer a wide range of plastic blowpipes that allow the piper to maximise the airflow into the bag. The BlowStick range includes the MaxiStick, AdjustiStick and FlexiStick which will help ensure you find your perfect playing position. Pipe Bags are available in leather or synthetic materials. Sheepskin is the preferred choice of leather pipe bag and requires to be seasoned on a monthly basis using Airtight seasoning. For ease of use and longevity synthetic pipe bags are in high demand. t: +44 (0)141 333 5696 e: info@ Find out more. Visit us online at

The Reeds Chanter reeds are selected based on strength and we have chosen reeds from makers that compliment our range of chanters. Pipe Bands prefer a more robust sound and select reeds that are stronger to blow and feel more resistant, a solo piper prefers a more comfortable reed with a mellower tone that will enhance the musical enjoyment of the performance. Luckily today synthetic reeds are available that produce an excellent drone sound on a consistent and reliable basis. Cane is still used by the traditionalists aspiring to achieve the perfect tone but the majority will select synthetic reeds for their reliability. We have selected reeds that compliment our bagpipes and chanters. t: +44 (0)141 333 5696 e: info@ Find out more. Visit us online at

The Case It is essential that you protect your bagpipes with a suitable carrying case. The Piper Case ticks all the boxes with padded walls for protection, internal holding straps and pockets for those essential maintenance accessories. Our bagpipes have never lost their value and neither will your heirloom bagpipes. The Piper Case It offers several carrying options with a shoulder strap and back pack straps. t: +44 (0)141 333 5696 e: info@ Find out more. Visit us online at

Maintaining Your Bagpipes Premium quality heirloom bagpipes are made from African Blackwood, a natural material that will change depending on the conditions where they are played and stored. During playing the instrument will fill with moisture from your breath which will absorb into the wood. While in storage the wood will dry and adjust to the natural climate. Combining this with the different climates around the world and the places bagpipes visit they will be in a constant state of fluctuation. Proper maintenance of your instrument will ensure you avoid any problems with the condition of your pipes and you will continue to enjoy many years of piping pleasure. Based on our vast experience here is what we recommend: Use Piper blackwood oil once a year depending on your climate. Remove excess moisture from your drones using cotton brushes. Leave the pipes disassembled for one hour after every period of play. Do not apply too much hemp and monitor this after long periods of play. Moisture will absorb into the hemp eventually causing the wood to split if it is not maintained appropriately. This is particularly important for the blowpipe and stocks where most moisture passes. t: +44 (0)141 333 5696 e: info@ Find out more. Visit us online at

Our manufacturing processes have been refined over 60 years and we believe there is no match to the skill of our trained time served turners.
