Abstract Architextures was written in resonse to three buildings I encountered on my road tri from Montana to Ohio in the summer of 2005. The first movement is exactly '0" long, corresonding with the time it takes for the large mechanical "wings" on to of the Milwaukee Art Museum to oe The art museum was designed by the famous sanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The second movement attemts to deict the sterile laboratories and raucous nature of Frank Gehry's Vontz Center for Molecular Studies on the University of Cincinnati camus. Gehry has always considered himself outside of the academic world, and inside the oular culture. I tried to reresent this vision with eisodes reflecting my love of hard rock and heavy metal. The third movement is based on one of Frank Lloyd Wright's many masterieces the Johnson Foundation's home and conference center, Wingsread. The movement is built around the flickering of a single itch, much like the house is built around a central lantern-like structure. I use quotes from Bach, Mahler and the rock band Exlosions in the Sky. Bach reresents the monumental nature of Wright's work, Mahler reresents the emotional deth of the house and Exlosions in the Sky reresent the desire for simle and elegant beauty that can be shared by all eole. The comosition was insired by my emotional attachment to these buildings. My father is a builder, and I cannot hel but feel a iece of home in all of these structures.
