2018-2019 SEASON

WELCOME TO THE 2018-19 SEASON! A Note from Artistic Director, Brent Gibbs Welcome to University of Arizona School of Theatre, Film & Television s 2018-19 Season! We are excited to present our new slate of works through the Arizona Repertory Theatre, the Studio Series, Film & Television student screenings, Widescreen Wednesdays, and the Undergraduate Research Symposium. Immerse yourself in the ART stage with Like Heaven, the original work by TFTV s playwright Elaine Romero; the lively musicals Sister Act and Spring Awakening; the contemporary plays The Cripple of Inishmaan and Top Girls; and the classic masterpiece Richard III featuring the artistry of our exceptional students and faculty. Experience thoughtprovoking original performance pieces through the Studio Series with its focus on topics relevant to student populations and the broader Tucson community. Be amazed by original works by student filmmakers showcased at the popular premieres What s Up, Docs?, Magic Hour, and I Dream in Widescreen before they take their work to major film festivals all over the world. Join us at Widescreen Wednesdays for a series of films handpicked and presented by Film & Television faculty. And finally, we invite you to the 7th annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, which celebrates some of the best-written work of our students and provides them an opportunity to share their scholarship with the community and invited visiting scholars. We value your continued support of our signature programs, which makes showcasing the talents of our students possible. We hope you will enjoy this season of storytelling in its many different forms and engage in the rich emotional experiences only offered through live theatre and the immersive cinematic experience. Welcome to the Arizona Repertory Theatre s 2018-2019 season. ART is a unique theatre company housed within the School of Theatre, Film and Television at the College of Fine Arts on the campus of the University of Arizona. In reality, ART is simply one part of an educational program whose core mission is to train the next generation of theatre artist. We take that charge very seriously. But we are also a producing organization with a responsibility to you, our patrons. We need to produce our shows at the highest level that we can. This season we are fortunate to have a slate of titles that will thrill, enthrall and captivate. We are also fortunate to have a company of student actors, designers, stage managers and technicians who are as talented as any who have ever worked on the stages here at ART. Many of these students will, as those before them, go on to have vibrant professional careers and we are all fortunate to watch as they learn their trade here. Our goal, as always, is to help educate these students so that they can fulfill both their awesome possibilities and their serious responsibilities. In other words, we train them to be professionals. We hope you enjoy being a vital part of the process because we cannot do this without you. A Note from Managing Director, Jenny Lang Welcome to University of Arizona School of Theatre, Film, and Television s 2018-2019 season. This season promises to deliver the same high quality productions and top-notch audience services that we have been providing the Tucson community since 1936. Through Arizona Repertory Theatre, the Studio Series, and Film & Television screenings, our students will showcase their talents, tell compelling stories, and provide clear results of what happens in our classrooms and studios. Thank you for your continued support! Deanna Fitzgerald and Yuri Makino Interim Co-Directors, School of Theatre, Film & Television

LIKE HEAVEN by Elaine Romero LIKE HEAVEN April dreams of singing the blues, but life and love are in the way. Her little sister can t let her go and her friend Trudy worries about her eternal soul. Enter a mysterious stranger who unwittingly provides a path to escape. Filled with heart and humor, Like Heaven is a new comedy by awardwinning playwright and University of Arizona Professor Elaine Romero. A former William Inge Playwright-in-Residence, Romero s plays have been presented at the Eugene O Neill Theater Center, the Goodman Theatre, and theatres around the country. Fortunately for us in Like Heaven, the four women from Independence, Kansas prove, once and for all, that there is no place like home. The Cripple of Inishmaan By Martin McDonagh THE CRIPPLE OF INISHMAAN Off the west coast of Ireland, on the remote Island of Inishmaan, word arrives that a Hollywood film is to be shot on a neighboring island. The one person who wants to be in the film more than anybody is young Cripple Billy, an orphan in search of escape from the oppression of his daily life. Bringing his signature wry wit and biting social irony, playwright Martin McDonagh has crafted a painfully funny coming of age story that employs a series of whiplash reversals and false expectations. From the writer of the recently Oscar nominated film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, this poignant comic masterpiece is equal parts dark comedy and Irish fable. TOP GIRLS In 1982, the United Kingdom was still adjusting to and celebrating its first female Prime Minister. It was a time when glass ceilings were starting to crack and women were finding their voice in the corporate and political world. Top Girls captures the exhilaration of an era when advancement for women no longer was a novelty. One of the most important playwrights of today, Caryl Churchill, has provided a brilliant script that celebrates women throughout history and brings to life a time when things seemed to be finally changing and reminds us of the distance still left to be traveled. RICHARD III Wonderfully wicked and incredibly entertaining, Richard III tells the tale of Shakespeare s most notorious villain. Misshapen in both body and mind, the Duke of York conspires and kills his way to the crown. Through cunning language and dastardly deeds, he seduces everyone in his path. But can he maintain his ill-gotten reign or will the ghosts from Richard s past pull him down? Only a cataclysmic conflict will resolve whether evil will prevail or truth will triumph. SPRING AWAKENING Based on Frank Wedekind s play of the same name, Spring Awakening explores, with poignancy and passion, the complex journey from adolescence to adulthood of a dozen young people in 1891 Germany. With a book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by pop star Duncan Sheik that Entertainment Weekly calls, the most gorgeous Broadway score this decade, this eight time Tony Award winning landmark musical is an electrifying fusion of morality, sexuality and rock-n-roll. But his entire life is a lie: he is the unwitting star of The Truman Show, a reality television program broadcast 24 hours a day to the world. The people he thinks are his friends and coworkers are actors, and his life is a scripted narrative shaped by TV producer Christof, played by Ed Harris. (1950) September 26, 2018 Film Introduced by Dr. Joshua Gleich William Holden stars as Joe Gillis, a struggling screenwriter who finds himself in a twisted relationship with Norma Desmond, a washed-up silent film star who is plotting her big-screen comeback. (1993) October 24, 2018 Film Introduced by Dr. Bradley Schauer Low-budget horror movie director Lawrence Woolsey, played by John Goodman, travels from town to town showing kitschy films to theaters packed full of screaming kids. In October 1962, he finds himself in Key West during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the cheesy atomic horror in his films begins to strangely reflect the horror of everyday life during the Cold War. (1973) November 28, 2018 Film Introduced by Prof. Michael Mulcahy Francois Truffaut stars as Ferrand, the director of a film where the behind-the-scenes drama is more interesting than anything happening in front of the camera! This sexy, funny, and sometimes tragic film is considered by many to be Truffaut s masterpiece, and one of the greatest foreign films of all time. (1941) March 27, 2019 Film Introduced by Dr. Kevin Byrne Joel McCrea stars as John L. Sullivan, a director of slapstick comedies who yearns to direct socially responsible dramas. Taking to the road to learn more about how the other half lives, he meets a down-on-herluck actress and gets involved in zany situations that take him from soup kitchens to prison camps to Hollywood board rooms. (2005) April 24, 2019 Film Introduced by Dr. Barbara Selznick Director George Clooney tells the real-life story of famed television journalist Edward R. Murrow and his conflict with Senator Joseph McCarthy, who in the 1950s stoked public paranoia about the Communist infiltration of America. Considering McCarthy dangerously irresponsible, Murrow plans to challenge him on air, even if it costs him his career. SCHOOL OF THEATRE, FILM & TELEVISION tftv.arizona.edu 13
