Message from the President: Hello everyone! Thank you all for your patience this past fall while I was busy finishing up my doctoral degree. Although we didn t have many events scheduled in the Fall, our Spring semester is filling up quickly with fun events. Please help support the Flute Choirs by attending our Fundraiser Concert on Sunday March 13th at 6:30 pm at the Steinway Gallery. Our goal is to help raise money to purchase a bass flute for the groups. This has been our goal for several years now and we are making it a priority to give the flute choirs the opportunity to have this instrument. Our flute choirs are full of some of our most active and supportive members and we are working hard to help the ensembles grow and be successful. You can also hear our flute choirs on their Feburary 27th free concert at Union United Methodist Church at 6pm. Another event that I am excited to announce is our second annual trivia night. The members that were in attendance last year had a great time. We are trying to make this event even bigger this year by teaming up with the St. Louis Classical Guitar Society. We hope to see you all there on Saturdy, April 30th. In addition to playing trivia you will also get to hear the amazing talent within these two orginizations as we will have small chamber groups perfroming at the event. Also, the board is currently working on next year s scheule of events. If you have any suggestion or recommendations for the schedule, please email me at flutesocietyofsaintlouis@gmail.com Please Support Our Sponsors: Flute Specialists, Inc. 606 S. Rochester Rd. FSSL strives to bring high quality and interesting programming to St Louis to benefit the community. As a not-for-profit organization, the expense of providing our programming is always a concern. We rely heavily upon membership fees and donations so that we can continue to bring this caliber of programming to you. Please note that FSSL is a 501(c)(3) organization, and donations that you make will be tax deductible (please consult your tax advisor if you have any questions). We thank you for your support, as your contributions will continue to keep FSSL financially healthy and a strong organization!

Member Spotlight:Andrea Clark -Why did you choose to play the flute? I don t remember, but I probably just liket the way it sounded. -When did you begin playing the flute? In the fourth grade. Our school district (in New York State, about 50 miles north of NYC) had a great instrumental and vocal music program. -Do you have any career highlights you would like to share and/or what is your most notable or personally satisfying accomplishment? About 12 years ago, when our daughters were in high school, I decided to start taking lessons again and ramp up my playing to the next level. This eventually led to me joining the St. Louis Wind Symphony, auditioning for and being awarded the principal flute position with the St. Louis Civic Orchestra, buying a new and better flute and later a new and better piccolo, helping to form a woodwind quintet, and just generally challenging myself as a musician. -Do you have a favorite practice routine? Can you describe it? I probably don t practice as much as I should! :-) -Describe any other interests or hobbies you have. I also play whistle and enjoy playing and performing Irish and old-time music. -Who are your favorite composers? Mozart and the Russians -What is your favorite style of music to listen to? to perform? I like most kinds of music -Describe your musical background (schools attended, ensembles performed in, etc.). I studied flute at American University for two years as an undergrad, then later in life took lessons with Paula Kasica. See above for ensembles. I don t have a formal music degree. -Do you have any advice for aspiring flutists? Never give up on yourself! Recent News: Trivia Night: We are excited to be working with the St. Louis Classical Guitar Society for our second annual trivia night! It should be a great event! Flute Choirs: The Adult and Youth Flute Choirs are up and running for the season. Rehearsals are now being held at Union United Methodist Church in South St. Louis. It is not too late to join if you want to play! Contact Kim Hollander, (k.hollander@charter.net) or Kristi Benedick, (kristi7997@yahoo.com) if you are interested.
