The Addams Family Audition Information for the Spring Musical Director: Chris Gillespie Music Conductor: Brian Fisher Vocal Director: Nadim Nader Assistant Directors: Joe Spencer, Devin Shirley Choreography: Jennifer Cordiner Auditions are scheduled for January 12 and 13. We will have invited callbacks on January 14. The cast list should be up by that Friday. Actors and Crew are to sign up for one audition date on the bulletin board outside the auditorium. Audition forms, Calendar and Theatre Contract must be turned in before your audition/interview time. The audition process will include: Presenting a short monologue Choose one of the monologues provided to present at your audition or find your own 1 minute comedic monologue. Singing a short section of a song Choose one of the required songs listed. You may opt to sing another song as well, but the song must be from a musical, and you must have sheet music or taped accompaniment. No a cappella singing will be permitted. Please be prepared. Being memorized with the music is not necessary, but advisable. It will show us how committed you are to the production. Music must be sung without pre- recorded vocals in the accompaniment. Learning a dance combination You will be taught a dance combination. Please wear clothes that you can move in. Dance will be done in large groups. Singing and acting auditions will be in small groups in front of the audition committee. Suggested Monologues (you may find your own if you wish): OSCAR from Sweet Charity by Neil Simon: Charity You re a dance hall hostess I ve known it for a week now. I was riding a bus one night, saw you, jumped off and before I could catch you I saw you go into this dance hall. I went in and stood in the corner. You were sitting in a booth with some man. You were laughing and giggling. I didn t stay very long an hour or so. That night when I went home, I tried very, very hard to hate you, Charity but I couldn t do it. I just couldn t hate you. MACK from Mack & Mabel by Michael Stewart: You re an artist?! Now I ve heard it all! Look, Miss Normand, you make a lot of money, people all over the world know your name, you ve got a car, nice clothes, a beautiful home and you didn t get any of them because you remotely resemble anything you might call an artist. You got them because I counted for you! One you

walk, two three you turn, four five six you smile, seven you cry, eight you laugh! Noma Talmadage is an artist, Liliian Gish is an artist, you, Miss Norman, can count up to eight and if I hadn t taught you that you d still be back in that bean wagon asking for your fifteen cents! Now I am going to count once again and you are going to do what passes for acting. MRS. BOYD from Henry, Sweet Henry by Nunnally Johnson: Frank, don t you think we might leave all the interpretation to the psychiatrists? I must say this is really something new! Such concern for a child you don t even believe is yours. She ll be brought home by the police, apparently for running around the streets like a tart. The truth is, she s a cold, selfish, ungrateful child and this is our thanks for sending her to the best schools. Oh, for God s sake, Frank, stop being melodramatic. She had a tantrum like a million other spoiled kids and she s put on this act of running away for the sole purpose of frightening her parents, and once that s done, and she gets hungry, she ll be home in time for dinner. LILIANE LA FLEUR from Nine by Arthur Kopit: All right! So I hear Contini is in Venice, so I come to Venice - I m paying for this film. I ve a right to see it being made, don t you think? I would think. so I go to his room and find a note pinned to the door: Go to the mud bath. So I go to the mud bath and find a note with my name on it sticking out of the mud: Go to the steambath. Si I go to the steambath. In the steambath I find yet another note! Go to the garden. No I find still another note! Go back to the steambath. Well, I have to tell you, I am not pleased with this reception. ELLIOT from The Goodbye Girl by Neil Simon: Would you please listen very carefully because this may be the last time I m ever talking to you...i m sorry about what happened today. But I have no designs on you whatsoever. And you re not the only person in this city who got dumped on. I m a recent dumpee myself. I m a dedicated actor, and because of a mentally arthritic director, I am now playing Richard the Third like Elizabeth II. I don t want to see you when I get up in the morning. You think the whole world is against you, don t you? Wrong! The only one who s against you is you. And if I were you, I d sure hate to have you as an enemy. Songs for auditions (choose one): Audition songs may be sung by girls or boys. Sheet music and audio tracks can be downloaded from Wakefield Theater Arts Website which can be found at http://tinyurl.com/addfam When You re An Adams measures 275 298 But Love (Reprise) measures 16-40 Moon and Me measures 28-44 Pulled measures 21-33 Secrets measure 17-60 Trapped measure 8-22

The Roles Gomez Addams: A man in his prime, of Spanish descent and a wild passion. Adores his wife, takes great pride in his children and his family. He s very much about what it means to be an Addams. His desire for Morticia is undimmed after 20 years of marriage. He adores her. Must have great comedic timing & strong tenor voice. Morticia Addams: Holds the balance of power in the family; often seems like the only emotionally mature member of the clan. Beautiful and aristocratic, the real head of the family. She enjoys being the center of attention in the room. Graceful, reserved and morbid. Must be a great dancer who is funny and sings well, alto/mezzo soprano. Uncle Fester: The narrator of the piece, Fester is child- like, hugely enthusiastic and totally incorrigible. A vaudevillian, needs strong comedy and tenor voice. Wednesday Addams: Romantic lead, a young version of Morticia. Needs a great pop/rock style singing voice (Think Avril Lavigne) and a witty, DRY sense of humor. Grandmama: Ancient. Good- natured, easily led. Very active for her age. Character singer with strong humor. Pugsley Addams: Plump, adorable and FUNNY...a smaller version of Gomez. His singing voice needs to be big. Think Ethel Merman. Lurch: A man of very, very few words, often spoken at half speed. Most of what he utters is long groans. Lurch sees everything, knows everything that goes on under the roof of The Addams Family mansion. Needs a low bass voice. Mal Beinecke: Military man, a man who must be obeyed, with little patience for his wife and son. He has lost his youthful exuberance and passion for life. Musical theater baritenor voice. Alice Beinecke: She truly loves her husband and loves that he takes charge; removing any responsibility from her for making decisions. However, since he has become more distant, she has refocused her love to her only son, Lucas. When nervous, she begins to rhyme. Must be very funny and sing well. Lucas Beinecke: A writer, he has conflicts with his father's closed- minded ways. Fell in love with Wednesday at first sight. A classic co- dependent, Lucas feels good when everybody's happy. Needs to be a great pop/rock singer. Ancestors: An ensemble of dead ancestors from a variety of time periods and eras including Conquistador, Caveman, Flapper, Victorian, 60 s, 80 s, etc. All will be ghostly and ghoulish singers and dancers that rise from the Crypt to help Fester bring love to the Addams Family.
