! THE MUSIC CLASS MUSIC NOTES Music Pups and The Benefits Of Mixed Age Classes In Music Pups, our educational goals for parents and children are best served by mixed aged classes. Not only do mixed age classes provide children with a powerful learning environment, but they provide a uniquely rich social experience as well. Families with siblings have the opportunity to attend class together. Babies learn from observing older children, while physically interacting primarily with their parent or caregiver. Older children interact with their parents, but also with other children in the room, creating a meaningful social context for the music. The age diversity in the class creates a creates a non competitive, nurturing environment. Families are encouraged to interact with the music in ways that suit their physical ability and enjoyment. We don't expect everyone in class to do activities in the same way! Sometimes parents of three year-olds ask me if their child is too old for class. My reply is that Music Pups is developmentally appropriate for three year-olds and that, About TMC Each local teaching center outside Atlanta, Philadelphia and Nashville is individually owned and operates under its own name. The Music Class Inc. is the company that produces the music and books you use in class, and provides training and support for your teacher. Local teachers can adapt our programs, but we all have the same goal in mind: working with parents and caregivers to enable each child to achieve his or her full musical potential. -Rob Sayer Director, The Music Class Inc. musically, they continue to benefit tremendously. Even if your three year old does not appear to be engaged, rest assured, he/she is learning! If your child enjoys coming to class and enjoys doing the songs and activities from class at home (for which the answer is almost always "Yes"), then keep on coming!! ! THE MUSIC CLASS MUSIC NOTES Classical Music, World Music, and All That Jazz One of the key elements needed to provide an enriched music environment is exposure to a broad variety of musical sounds. An analogy can be made to language development. When learning their native language, children must be exposed to all the sounds that make up that language early on. Without that exposure, fluency can be jeopardized. Later, when achieving mastery of spoken language, it helps enormously for a child to be exposed to a large vocabulary. Experiencing a large language vocabulary is very important for optimal language development. In music learning, early exposure to a wide variety of musical sounds is equally important. Exposure to variations in tonality, rhythm and style create a familiarity with important musical idioms and a readiness to learn different kinds of music later. The Music Class recordings include music of many styles, including jazz, classical, and ethnic music from around the world. Additionally, songs in a multitude of scale and rhythm types are included to help your child obtain a sophisticated musical vocabulary. Every so often I receive an email from a parent who took About TMC Each local teaching center outside Atlanta, Philadelphia and Nashville is individually owned and operates under its own name. The Music Class Inc. is the company that produces the music and books you use in class, and provides training and support for your teacher. Local teachers can adapt our programs, but we all have the same goal in mind: working with parents and caregivers to enable each child to achieve his or her full musical potential. -Rob Sayer Director, The Music Class Inc. class a few years back, sharing their excitement about being at a concert somewhere where their child sang along with Music Class words to a performance of Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, or Bach. By learning a song in Music Class they were able to approach classical music as something familiar and enjoyable how cool is that!! ! THE MUSIC CLASS MUSIC NOTES Benefits of Early Exposure to Music Research clearly shows that early childhood is the critical time for music development. A child in a stimulating music environment receives an aptitude boost. Where environmental stimulation is lacking, however, children are at significant risk of not achieving the foundation needed to support a lifetime of music learning and enjoyment. The brain undergoes a period of rapid neural development after birth, continuing for the first years of life. During this time, new neural connections are forming more rapidly than at any other time in our lives, and during our mid-childhood years, the brain starts to prune these connections, retaining only the most important and most often used ones. This becomes the basis for our understanding of music and ultimately the basis for what we like in music, what music moves us, and how it moves us. This is not to say that we can't learn to appreciate new music as adults, but basic structural elements are incorporated into the very wiring of our brains when we listen to music early in our lives. Daniel Levitin Ph.D. (2006) This Is Your Brain on Music p.107. About TMC Each local teaching center outside Atlanta and Philadelphia is individually owned and operates under its own name. The bottom line is that easy and relatively effortless learning and enjoyment of music will be an option for those children who have the benefit of a rich musical environment in the earliest years of life. A number of our graduates are now in their late teens and having great success playing an instrument. Their parents always make a point of saying it all started with The Music Class!!
