ANNUAL REPORT 2017

DEAR FAMILY AND FRIENDS, Film Columbus made great strides in 2017 toward our mission of enriching the community through the art and business of film. Film Columbus was instrumental in the Ohio Legislature s decision to increase the Ohio Motion Picture tax credit from $20 million to $40 million annually. This statewide increase paves the way for additional productions to choose Central Ohio as their filming location. This means more jobs, more crew development, more local talent and more premieres. The city of Columbus provided increased funding making it possible for the organization to increase the executive director position to full-time. This will mean increased productivity and continued growth and positive economic impact for the film industry in Columbus. We are on our way to becoming a city that is recognized as a top city for film education, exhibition and production. We have more exciting things brewing for 2018 and look forward to continuing our streak of each year being the best year yet for film in Columbus. Chris Hamel Board President John Daugherty Executive Director ABOUT Established in 2006 by Gail Mezey, Film Columbus (The Greater Columbus Film Commission) is a 501(c)(3) organization. Film Columbus is a proud member of The Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI). 2017 OVERVIEW 2017 was a fresh start of sorts for Film Columbus. The Executive Director became a full-time position. Thanks to an increase in support from the City of Columbus the Film Commission finds itself better positioned to grow the film industry in our city. In March, Film Columbus presented a screening of Welcome to Grandville in the screening room at the Columbus College of Art & Design. Approximately 100 city and educational leaders attended the screening and then discussed the potential economic impact of projects that wanted to film in Columbus and the surrounding area. CCAD also hosted the 3rd Annual Columbus Film Summit in June. Building on the three pillars of film production, education and exhibition, this year s keynote speaker was Stephanie Silverman, Executive Director of the Belcourt Theater in Nashville. Stephanie discussed the importance of independent theaters in Columbus and Nashville, supporting Film Columbus s mission that the art and business of film enriches our community. John Daugherty was instrumental in connecting the Sylvester Stallone/ Dave Bautista film Escape Plan 3 to the Ohio State Reformatory (Shawshank Prison) in Mansfield. Film producer Emmit Furla Oasis (EFO) Films was grateful to Film Columbus for helping to further solidify the ongoing relationship between EFO Films and Film Columbus. The Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit continues to evolve. In 2017, Film Columbus was instrumental in raising awareness for the current state of the tax credit. A formal letter along with recommendations was written to the Development Services Agency, administrators of the tax credit. The letter garnered the attention of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). Film Columbus

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND ACTIVITIES IN 2017 1 Economic impact review during presentation of the Welcome to Grandville pilot screening presenting 6 possible projects with a potential of an economic impact of $18.65 million. 2 Bruce Willis/Hayden Christensen film First Kill premiered in Columbus. met with Angela Miele, V.P. of Government Affairs for MPAA, to discuss the tax credit and lay out a plan that benefits the entire state of Ohio. MPAA offered their assistance in gathering the state s film commissions in 2018 to find a clear path to success for Ohio. While Miele was in Columbus, the film commission also toured local post-production house Ohio Film Group with her. She was more than impressed and was excited to see that this facility existed in Columbus. Film Columbus hosted two premieres in 2017 for films shot in Central Ohio. The Arnold Schwarzenegger film Aftermath and the Bruce Willis/ Hayden Christensen film First Kill both premiered in Columbus to packed houses. 3 Arnold Schwarzenegger film Aftermath premiered in Columbus. 4 Developed a Tax Credit Worksheet comparing Ohio with states that have growing successful tax credit programs. Included in the document were recommendations on how the program could be further developed to benefit Ohio. The worksheet was then shared with state representatives allowing them to see in detail how the tax credit program is actually working. 5 Completion of the #filmitincbus Crew Card giving visiting crew members discounts on restaurants and services around town.

In 2017 the Film Commission continued and solidified our new mission, purpose, and vision: STRATEGIC GOALS FOR 2018 1 Quarterly gatherings/ networking events 2 Film Fund developed with Columbus Association of Performing Arts and local arts leaders 3 Expand tax credit and/or add a per project cap 4 Create a green certification program for production 5 Three films shot/produced in Central Ohio 6 Convene local film festivals to better plan/work together 7 Expand Film Summit to include other regions 8 Work with Columbus Metropolitan Library to introduce teens to film through script writing contest Welcome to Grandville photos by Corey Reeb. PURPOSE (OUR WHY) To enrich our community through the art and business of film. MISSION (OUR HOW) By convening and empowering individuals, organizations and businesses in the spirit of collaboration. VISION (OUR WHAT) So that Columbus is recognized as a top city for film education, exhibition and production and film is recognized as an art form that has a measurable impact on the economy, individuals and community. WE WILL... Create a unifying vision that positions Columbus as a leader in film exhibition, production and education to inform strategy and accompanying tactics for the next 5 years. Rally city stakeholders (film organizations, community, government, funding partners etc.) behind a shared direction for the benefit of all stakeholders of the story. Position film as both art AND business in Columbus.
