joyce Joyce Carpati Where were you born? New York City. Where do you currently live? Manhattan in Turtle Bay, I spend time in Paris as well. What do you look forward to? I look forward to working more and enjoying the ever-changing world. I am very optimistic that it will be fine. I think there is a very exciting future and that is what I think of. I m looking forward to the changes and I embrace them all. Who is the most interesting person that you have met? I think it was when I was in the media business and that was Helen Gurley Brown, the Editor-in-Chief of Cosmopolitan magazine. I worked with her for many years and for me she was a most exciting woman. She understood what women were and who they wanted to be. She wrote Sex and the Single Girl in an era when it was very shocking to do so. She was very liberated. I admired her way of thinking. I was the director of beauty, fashion and advertising at Cosmopolitan. What do you do? I still study singing and I do perform in musical concerts, I go to the theatre a lot and the museums. I have lots of friends and I travel a lot. I just never stop. I read. I think that s why I want to be a part of the future. I am very active and I enjoy my family. Why do you live in New York, what do you love about it? I like the vibrancy of it. The vibrancy, the colour, the differences you see here. There are so many different people, fashions, and places to visit. I love the pulse of this wonderful city. What is your best advice for the future? To be optimistic, join in, don t be negative, be positive in everything that you can and it will come your way and work out. How old are you? 80. I enjoy myself so much I don t even feel I ve aged. l inda Linda Rodin Who is the most interesting person that you have met? It s a very difficult question. Marcello Mastroianni was quite captivating. What do you do? I am a fashion stylist and founder and owner of my own beauty line RODIN olio lusso. What do you love about New York? That it is my home and I feel so myself here. In your opinion who are the greatest musicians? Bob Dylan, Coleman Hawkins, Duke Ellington, Mozart, Bach, Frank Sinatra, Gino Paoli, Carlos Gardel, any music using the Bandoneón, Castor et Pollux opera, John Lennon. What excites you about today, what are you interested in? Just staying healthy and travelling a bit to warm places to collect shells. What is your best advice for the future? lynn Lynn Dell Where were you born? Manhattan, New York. Where do you live? Manhattan, New York. What do you look forward to? Doing everything that I am doing now, to live a life in my clothes with health both mentally and physically. What do you do? I have a wonderful, glamorous ladies boutique that I have had for 50 years on the upper east side called Off Broadway. I have had it for 50 years and I still love working today as much as I did when I first started. Doing business has changed a little bit in that time, but only a little bit. Why do you live in New York, what do you love about it? New York has the best and worst of everything. It has the most and least of everything. We have it all, it s all right here. What is the last great song that you heard? Anything by Frank Sinatra, Shirley Bassey s This is my Life, La Cage aux Folles The Best of Times. What is your best advice for the future? We are a world now, not just a country and we had all better get along. We should express ourselves and not be copy cats and respect all for the way that they want to live. How old are you? 80. Ilona Ilona Royce Smithkin Where were you born? A very small village in Poland. When I was one we moved to Berlin, Germany and then my parents sent me to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. In 1938 our family moved to the U.S.A. Where do you currently live? I have lived in the West Village, New York for the last 60 years. I live in an apartment up 3 flights of stairs with no kitchen and I love it. In the summertime I live in Provincetown, Massachusetts for 3 months. What do you look forward to? I greet every day as a gift because I don t know from day to day when I will be called away and so each day is a lovely surprise and I try to take it as a gift and make the most of it. Who is the most interesting person that you have met? Everybody, whether they re famous or just a person who says hello to me in the street. I have painted the portraits of Tennessee Williams and Ayn Rand. Each person I did a portrait for took my whole energy and focus. They were all very strong people. What do you do? I am an artist. I have many drawings that I drew of models and now I am finishing them. I am still very active painting and drawing and I also make sure that I walk each day up and down my stairs. I see friends and I make appointments and there are many unexpected things too. For the last 10 years I have started performing. I call it the Eyelash Cabaret. I sing songs by Marlene Dietrich and French, German and American songs with a musician called Zoë Lewis. I tell funny stories and for each song I change it up a little bit with a scarf to fit the song. It gives me great pleasure and everybody else too. Why do you live in New York, what do you love about it? There is always something to do, always something to see but you don t have to join in you can close your door and have quiet. You can attend lectures, the ballet, whatever turns you on you can have here. How old are you? 92.
